Mourning Dove sometimes wondered if she would have done better as a Caretaker, for it certainly didn't take her long to discover that she had a soft spot for pups. Now that she was coming into her own and not letting her grief rule her, she liked to spend more time around Caretakers and the little ones they taught and cared for.

One of the Caretakers she felt the most connected with was a soft-spoken she-wolf: Hidden Away. The bright brown she-wolf was gentle, if a bit skittish, from what Mourning Dove had seen. It was exactly the sort of wolf Dove enjoyed being around and while she knew it was usually pups and the elderly that Caretakers doted on... Dove often wished that she could be taken care of too. The hurt that she felt in the memory of her mother, brought to light any time someone addressed Dove by her changed name, was sometimes too much to bear. She had begun to seek out Hidden, desiring her quiet company when Dove felt particularly lonesome. Sometimes she even wondered if she would get over the ache in her chest faster, if she changed her rank to be that of a Caretaker, so she could spend more time with Hidden Away.

Yet, she knew that a Hunter was what she was meant to be. She was the wolf, among her fellow hunters, that provided the food for the pack and the pups. She would not have it any other way, but.. surely she was still allowed to visit the the Caretaker and any of the little ones she was looking after. That's what she had aimed to do that very day and she brought with her the fruits of her labor, a rabbit hanging from her jaws.

Mourning Dove had hoped that coming with food would otherwise wipe away any awkwardness that came with wanting to simply see Hidden Away and her wards.
Muffled was the greeting that Dove sent as she looked for the brown she-wolf.
"Hidden Away? Are you near?" She asked, looking for the Caretaker, or the recent litter of Willow Bark and Minnow, who might show her the way to her friend.

Hidden Away was finally starting to come into her own. She was a damaged wolf, but that didn’t mean that a repair wasn’t happening. Thanks to those around her, particularly her fellow caretakers, she was beginning to feel whole again. Taking on the role of caring for others - in particular, pups and the elderly, though mostly it was just pups - had really helped her overcome the trauma she had suffered prior to stumbling upon the Swiftfell. Her burgeoning friendship with one of the hunters, a she-wolf who had also been through a lot, was also quite helpful.

Mourning Dove was a gentle wolf, much like herself, and she admired the way Dove contributed to the pack. Although Hidden Away recognized her role as important - especially with how many pups Minnow seemed to produce - she sometimes wished she could have a more active, evident job within the pack. Even so, she adored her position - ignoring the fact that Willow’s one pup, Ashen Spruce, was an absolute nightmare to care for. Talk about a puppy going on to their terrible two’s too early, sheesh.

Just as Hidden Away started to feel frustrated at Spruce’s attitude, she heard a familiar voice calling her name. She gave a meaningful glance to Spruce, who pouted and flopped down dramatically in response, then moving away from the pup and toward the muffled voice. “Dove is that you?

She emerged with a soft smile, one that would be larger save for the trouble she had just been dealing with, and walked straight up to Mourning Dove, her mouth heavy with a fresh kill. “Oh, Dove, you’ve got wonderful timing. Don’t tell Willow, but some of his kids... ” Hidden sighed lightly, “Some of them are just such a pawful. Anyway, how have you been? That kill smells great.

Mourning Dove smiled around the rabbit when she heard Hidden's voice, followed shortly thereafter by the she-wolf herself. Lowering her head to deposit the rabbit at Hidden's paws.

"You assume I tell Willow anything." She replied with a small smile, comfortable enough around the Caretaker to be a little cheeky. "Don't worry. He won't hear it from me." She assured her friend and glanced passed her to the pups, before looking back to her friend. "I've been doing well enough. Trying to keep busy. Keep my mind off of... you know." She shrugged. "I just thought I'd stop by to see how you and the pups are getting along. Sounds like they're really making you work today, eh?" She asked and nudged the rabbit. "Maybe nipping off this beastie's ears and playing tug will occupy them for a bit." She suggested. "Which will in turn leave you to take the first bite. Unless the ears are your favorite, that is." She added with a small grin.

"May I come in? Or is it best to eat out here. I can help you watch the pups for a bit, if you'd like." She offered.

Hidden Away laughed - still a foreign feeling - at her friend’s comment. Willow Bark was wonderful, really, but it was best he not hear certain things. If he didn’t already know Ashen Spruce had an attitude, he would soon enough.

When Mourning Dove made a reference to her grieving, Hidden Away nodded somberly, keeping a serious face before quickly transitioning to a smile. That seemed to be Mourning Dove’s hidden talent - despite all she had going on in her own life, it seemed effortless for her to spread joy to others. The orange she-wolf very much appreciated the other’s presence for that and many other, numerous reasons.

That’s a great idea!” She responded to her friend’s idea. The little pups would certainly appreciate something new to play with that wasn’t each other’s tails. She bent down gingerly and tore off one of the ears, just as one of the other caretakers walked by. Hidden Away smiled up at the other female, tossing the long, furry ear in the direction of her. “Could you give that to the pups to play with?” The other nodded, picked up the ear, and ducked her head as she entered the den containing Willow and Minnow’s litter.

Hidden Away turned back to Mourning Dove and let out a long “Aaaaaah” of a sigh. “It looks like I got a break anyway, although you know I appreciate you asking.” She grinned, and then let it slip. “All these puppies keep making me think of how I-” She hated talking about it. “How I don’t have my own. It’s… I’m lonely, I think. I’m just lonely.” Her face had taken on some of its familiar sorrow, her eyes clouding a bit. “So I appreciate you being around, at least.” A half-smile made its way to her face, but she wasn’t all there for it.

Mourning Dove's tail began to wag behind her when her friend laughed and she smiled. She welcomed the sound of her friends laughing. She always wanted to be able to make Hidden Away laugh, even though at this particular moment, she hadn't entirely meant to. A happy accident, to be sure.

She was also pleased when her idea was well received and nodded a quiet greeting to the other caretaker.
"Of course. You know that beyond my hunting duties, I'd do anything to help you out." She assured her friend. As Hidden revealed her feelings on the matter of puppies, Dove's ears lowered and her tail stilled. She shifted her weight on her paws as she debated between inaction and movement, before she moved to stand next to her friend, sitting down and gently leaning on the ginger she-wolf.

"I'm always gonna be around." She promised. "I'm not going anywhere. And as for puppies... Well I'm sure you're bound to have some sooner than later! After all, you're so kind and beautiful, any wolf would be privileged to be your mate." She fell silent for a moment, before adding. "Are there any wolves in the pack that you're interested in? Or even any that you think are just a little prettier than the rest?" She asked her friend with a smile and a small twinkle in her eye. She herself had found her gaze following one male in particular, but she wasn't about to take this moment away from Hidden to make it about herself.
