Description
___Also known as Bean Nighe, or Cyoeraeth, Banshee are a specific type of fae associated with the British Isles. The banshee is said to be a female spirit who can be an omen of death as well as a messenger for the after life. It is said that her screams mark the death of anyone who has died before their natural time. Others claim that a banshee only wails for the family lines that they are attached or associated to, regardless of circumstances surrounding the person's death. Whatever the circumstances, her wails are said to be either be so piercing that they have been known to shatter glass or to be so melodic that they are pleasant to the ears. Even without the scream, many claim that a Banshee can predict the death of those who are soon to die.
___Banshee, as Fae, do not experience the same emotions as humans do. It could be said their emotions are on a different wavelength than humans. However, as Banshee spend more of their time around humans than a majority of other Fae, they are more attuned to the emotions of other by comparison.
___As Banshee's reproduce, their female offspring are not guaranteed to turn into a Banshee. This inner ability is triggered by outside power currents which stimulate the latented Fae genes into activating. Which means that Banshees often face a dangerous and traumatic event before their true origins are revealed. Before this trigger event, a Banshee has little to no access to her powers. Which means that some women go their whole lives without realizing what they are until after they die of ‘old age’.
___ After a Banshee has been awakened, their body slowly shifts over a long period of time to a more Fae composition. This lets them become more like the Banshee in folklore - lonely woman who walk around the earth, seemingly unaffected by everything around them.
Status
___Rare. It is passed down through the bloodline and not all with the dormant gene will awaken. This is because they need an outside source of power to awaken their Banshee abilities without instantly killing them. Sometimes this transformation and power drives the unknowing host mad, thus ending that bloodline early.
Supernatural Information
___Death Sense - A banshee's first gift is to sense an immanent death in their territory. At first it will start out as a feeling but over time, with practice, they will be able to sense details. Such as who will die specifically, who by, what time, or any other important factors or clues leading up to and having to deal with a person's death.
___Death Scream - The second gift that follows the first one in rapid succession is the involuntary death scream. They will scream when someone is dying or about to die. Once they have figured out what they are and what this scream is for, the involuntary part will fade away. They will be able to concentrate on who they would want to scream and predict the death for verses those who have no relevance to their choices. This scream, because of it's intensity, tends to bring pain to those supernaturals if they are within the large hearing range.
___Hearing - A banshee has the most advanced hearing of any supernatural creature. They can hear what is on the physical plain as well as what is on the supernatural or spiritual plane. With practice they can control when they want to hear something and on what plane of existence they want to hear it from. They are also very attuned to the voices of other banshee around the world, almost as they they have their own private wavelength that only one another can hear no matter the distance.
___Vocal Vibrations - Though the death scream has only one setting, Banshee have control over their vocal utterances almost completely. With practice they can mute their screams, give them a max distance they can travel, and use them without the presence of death. They can use it as a call similar to that of a werewolves' howl. They can use it to unhinge equilibrium or create a nausea sensation. They can even use their scream to bring people varying levels of pain up to the point that it makes them pass out.
___Sound Vibrations - Banshee can manipulate the vibrations in the air to form something akin to a concussive force. This force is then extended from their body, usually by way of their hands to direct it. It is short ranged and mainly used in a defensive manner.
___Clairaudience - is usually defined as the ability to hear the voices or thoughts of spirits.
___Clairsentience - is the ability to have an impression of what a spirit wants to communicate, or to feel sensations instilled by a spirit.
___Mental Connections - Banshee are able to mentally connect with people on the different planes of existence. This can occur when they are awake or when they are asleep. Because of this, it would seem that they are able to make an appearance in people's dreams in order to warn them of upcoming tragedies within their lives.
___Spirit Harboring and Possession - With their connection to death, Banshee's can harbor spirits for people who died through violent means. By doing so they are able to place the spirit of the recently departed back into their bodies. There are certain days where a Banshee is more vulnerable to possession than others; such as All Hallows Eve and May Eve. Unfortunately a possessed banshee does not exhibit many of the 'common' signs of possession, in fact the banshee herself may not realize she's been possessed until much later. The being possessing her can usually gain control, resulting in a fugue state. Unless the banshee has enough power she cannot regain control until the being gives it back to her, or the being's concentration is broken somehow. If the Banshee gains enough power and control, she can send the spirit beyond the veil with or without the spirit's consent. If she does not want to expel the spirit right away, a Banshee can tap into some of the spirit's residual powers to aid her in putting them to rest (or bringing them back into the living realm).
___Mountain Ash - They are not deterred by the presence of mountain as or Rowen Oak wood. They are actually able to use it to the same effect as any human being.
___Immunities - They are immune to many supernatural substances such as the bite of a werewolf and different supernatural venoms.
___Binding - Banshee can bind themselves to any family line that they feel would protect them in the long run. Binding themselves to a family limits their death sense from the area around them to the family that they are bound to. However, it does give them access to growing their own abilities at a safer and steadier rate than when they are unbound. This binding also endears them to the family bloodline in a supernatural sense - giving that bloodline the instinct to protect the Banshee even if they're not consciously aware of it. The bloodline they are bound to receives immunity from the negative effects of a Banshee's scream. The act of binding a banshee involves a ritual which includes the exchanging of blood between the Banshee and the head of the family.
___Physically - Unbound Banshee's heal the same rate from wounds as any other human. Both Bound and Unbound Banshee's still have the same level of strength, speed, and other physical attributes as a human being.
___Hearing - As Banshee's hearing is sensitive, they are vulnerable to loud or high pitched sounds. Such sounds produced from other Banshee's or technology could damage their hearing either permanently or temporarily.
___Glamour - Like all fae Banshee’s have a power called glamour that makes them attractive and can be used to influence people to a small degree; however a banshee’s glamour is one of the weakest of all the fae. Basically if it's the question of makeup or being born with it, Banshee's are all natural.
___Trance States - They are susceptible to being put into trance states by both things in the physical world as well as the spiritual world. They also fall prey to their own unconsciousness which often puts them in potentially dangerous situations either before or after death in the area has occurred.
___Mental Limitations - A banshee does not always get clear messages or have correct interpretations. This is because that they can not perceive something that is beyond their knowledge base or understanding. Because of this, communication through the different planes of existence and messages can either be mixed up or frighten the inexperienced Banshee.
___Rowan (Mountain Ash) Berries - While rowan ash is no barrier to fae, the berries from that tree are good at warding them off.
___St. John's Wort, Marigolds, Primrose - Like rowan berries these flowers are known to ward off fae. A circle of them (or berries) would act as a mountain ash barrier would. Ingestion would cause cold or flu like symptoms.
___Iron - Iron is to a banshee as Wolvesbane is to a werewolf. It can be used to bind them. Their screams also can not pierce iron. Metallic iron is one of the few substances that can truly kill a fae. It slows their healing and can even cause fever like symptoms if a wound is infected by it. Constant exposure is similar to being poisoned, leaving them even more weak than they usually are.
