- ۩ Described as having a genius level intellect, Slate's smarts saved him and his battalion more than once while he served in Kanto's military. A skilled soldier, he was always one step ahead of his enemies, pulling off victories people said couldn't be done. He can come off a little cold and calculating, but he always put those under his command first and is actually quite selfless, not hesitating to step into the line of fire to save another person. He has an indomitable will, never giving up or breaking, no matter what is ttrown at him. He has a slight sense of humour, but doesn't tolerate joking around when the chips are down. Loyal to a fault, he would never betray a comrade or a friend, not unless his hand was forced by their own actions. He can be quite flirty and charming towards women, but at the same time his somewhat fiery temper can be brought out when a guy disrespects or abuses the fairer sex. He is also somewhat of a loner, in that he avoids social gatherings and parties as much as possible.
Pet Peeves: Cockiness, men disrespecting women, losing
Quirks: Tends to feel regret when battling wild Pokémon, often leaving them a Berry when he leaves. Carries two Berreta pistols on his person, cleans and disassembles/reassembles them most nights.

- ۩ Born in the Kanto Region, he grew up in Pewter City, home to Brock, perhaps the world's best known Rock Type trainer. His first Pokémon was a Geodude, which his father caught him after much nagging by his son, who wanted to have one of his hero's, Brock's, Pokémon. Always a large lad, he was also quite solidly built, even as a child. He was always getting into fights at the Pewter City trainer's school, both Pokémon battles and more frequently fist fights.
As he grew up, his body began to grow more and more muscular. But despite being quite toned, he was also very intelligent. His high grades were part of the reason his presence was tolerated at school, despite the trouble he was always getting into. Eventually, he discovered the martial arts, something which spoke to a part of him he didn't know existed until then. Finding these fighting styles easy to learn, the teenager Slate began to expand his horizons. He trained in multiple hand to hand disciplines, but also learned the use of the sword and several other melee weapons, as well as spending a large part of his time at the firing range, leaning to master most types of firearms.
At the age of seventeen, he entered the Kantonian armed forces, quickly rising through the ranks of their military academy and graduating a year later as an officer, more specifically a lieutenant. His mind for tactics had seen him outmaneuver even the most seasoned teachers during practice drills, and his skills in martial arts saw him never lose a fight. For six months he trained other students in his unique fighting style, a mish mash of several martial arts which focused on efficiency and ruthlessness, taking out an opponent as quickly as possible and if needed killing them with next to no effort.
Another six months saw him deployed as the leader of a battalion, which saw active duty in the Kalos region. Here he earned the nickname among his foes as the Boulder, an unmovable opponent who never backed down and never took a backwards step. He always led from the front, he and his Pokémon fighting together. His unit always faced overwhelming odds and yet he kept their losses to a minimum. He also earned a reputation as a gentleman soldier, always writing to the loved ones of any soldier lost under his command.
After that deployment ended two years later, the then twenty one year old Slate was sent off as the head of a guerilla squad to fight in Johto, against a terrorist group that had popped up there. Using hit and run tactics, he thinned their numbers out, until he managed to catch a high ranking member. How he got that person to talk really doesn't bear thinking about, but he learned the location of the group's leaders.
Weighing up his options, he realized that by the time reinforcements arrived from Kanto or Johto, the enemy would have moved locations, aware their comrade had been caught. Instead, he lead what many would later say should have been a suicide mission. He hit their base fast and hard, his team taking out the enemy on sight. As they forged their way into the base, it became apparent that the final push to where the leaders were bunkered up would be impossible to approach with stealth.
Instead, he ordered his men to take up positions around the target location and, wearing full tactical gear, walked out into the open. He had shot three enemies dead before they knew he was there, before he was taken down in a hail of bullets. Thankfully, none of the fourteen rounds that injured him were immediately fatal, but his act of what could be described as either stupidity or bravery lead to the enemies positions being exposed, leaving them easy pickings for the concealed soldiers which accompanied Slate.
Medevacced to a hospital in Goldenrod City, Slate was left fighting for life. He received the best medical treatment both Johto and Kanto could offer. When he eventually pulled through, he was awarded the highest military honours both regions could offer. Afterwards, at the age of twenty four, he decided to request an honourable discharge from the military, in order to pursue a career as a Pokémon Trainer. He decided to start that journey in the Grotto Region, liking the idea of facing their eighteen Gyms. He was somewhat saddened by the fact he would have to leave his Rock type Pokémon behind, but knew he could catch a new team to befriend in Grotto.
