"Oh yeah! The labs are on deck 02, I believe. Maybe there are some text books that can help us?" So Kanja had been on the ship before? How interesting...and while she was about to wonder why she hadn't seen him yet, she remembered that she had usually holed up in the library or her room reading and studying. She was outside now, though...and Amaryllis liked it.
"Oh, let me help. Maybe you can hold one side and I can hold the other?" She rushed up to see if she could help Kanja carry the basket in. "I'm not surprised it's heavier now that it's not suspended by the water."

"Yeah that sounds right. I'm pretty sure there were books in there." He beamed at her. "Oh thank you. This should make it much easier. Thanks for helping." It took a moment for them to get a comfortable grip as they walked to the ship.
At least by the time they arrived back at the ship, the extra water had dripped out so they didn't make a mess on the way to the labs. There was so much stuff in the labs! "Guess he should find out if there are books about plant testing."

"No problem. I'm not super strong but I can still help." She smiled at him as they managed to find their hold and carry the basket in....thankfully not leaving a slipping hazard in their wake. She helped to lead him to the labs and lift up the basket so they could set it on one of the lab tables.
"Hmm...lets see..." Amaryllis looked over at the bookcase up against one of the walls, checking the spines of the books and finding one that looked like it might help them. "Biological analysis for flora....I think this is it." She brought it over to Kanja and opened the book so they could look over it.
After some time to look through the index, they found guided instructions on how to mix plant samples with specific chemicals to determine what might be poisonous. Amaryllis was already helping get containers and cutting off strips of the plants as samples for testing.

While Amaryllis found the right textbook, Kanja found a blank notebook and a pen. He began laying out each sample and tried drawing them, and described them as best he could. It wouldn't do if they forgot what plants they tested after all.
The pair spent hours in the lab with the plants as they tested samples. They had to opt not to taste 2, as the testing went... not well. But they had several left, and after testing and writing, they were finally ready to sample! They were laid out in a sort of rainbow. "Let's start with the brightest ones. I bet they'd make pretty teas." Kanja said, pulling off a leafy bit for each of them. "Ready?"
As soon as they ate the piece, Kanja regretted it and couldn't spit it out fast enough.

Amaryllis tried to help Kanja keep track and make detailed notes of the lake plants, including one that had these weird pods along the length of it. They made sure to test that one twice, once for the plant itself and twice for what was in the pods.
The time they spent making sure to follow the testing procedure to the letter was...taxing yet interesting. Finally they had the safe ones ready to sample and she smiled at the comment about the bright colors making pretty teas. "Yeah, they probably would." She took the leafy bit he gave her and nodded, putting it in her mouth.
Her eyes widened and immediately started watering once she started chewing, spitting it out so fast that she didn't even make it to a waste bin. "How....h-how is it so bitter?!"

"I don't know!" Kanja found a sink and ran the water, shoving his face under so he could wash his mouth out. "Geh!" He stuck his tongue out and looked like he was pouting. "Is it even worth trying to dry that one? I really don't want to..."

She rushed over to the sink and scooped water from the faucet into her mouth. She tried so hard to swish and gargle to get out the taste but it wasn't going away quickly. "Ugh....not for tea, at least....I don't think anyone would actually WANT to drink something that bitter."
She rubbed her tongue repeatedly, hoping it would help wash out the taste...and eventually it did start to die down after multiple rinsing. "Yikes....not a tea plant...but it still might have other uses somehow."

The next few tests didn't go so well either. They even ran to the mess hall to grab snacks to try and get the horrible tastes out of their mouths. But all the water and all the snacks just couldn't make them any better. At least the sea grass wasn't too bad. Or maybe it was, and they just couldn't taste anymore. Finally, Kanja flopped on the floor.
"Amaryllis. I can't feel my tongue anymore. We have to stop. Next time, we need a lab assistant to test for us." He whined, covering his face with his hands.

How could so many things that looked so pretty taste so...bad? She couldn't understand it; had humans of the old world actually ENJOYED things like that? Amaryllis groaned lightly, already sitting on the floor with her back against the counter with the sink, looking over at Kanja when he flopped to the floor.
"...Yeah....I don't feel so good, either. I think I'm allergic to bad flavors..." She sighed heavily in absolute disappointment over their failure. "....I guess that sea grass wasn't...too bad...right?"

"I don't know... Maybe we should rethink things. I mean... maybe we should see what things animals eat. The plants at least. Those probably taste better." Kanja sighed and let his arms flop out beside him. "No, the grass wasn't too bad. Unless we just killed our tongues and we can't actually tell. Maybe in a couple days, when we've recovered, we can try the grass again. We know it's safe, so it's just a matter of sampling it again." He rolled his head to the side and looked at her. "We should probably clean up and call it a day. I am SO dried out now."

"Yeah...that might not be such a bad idea. I know some animals can eat poisonous plants because their digestive systems are different than ours..." Oof, speaking of digestive systems, Amaryllis was starting to think that perhaps it wasn't such a good idea chasing those plants with snacks. It didn't feel like they were mixing well.
"I'll set the sea grass aside to dry out. Maybe that will make a difference...somehow.." She whined a bit, turning herself so she could grab onto the counter and use it to hoist herself up to her feet. Her feet moved sluggishly to take her to the sample plants, tossing the ones that were NOT good into the waste disposal.
"I think I need some medicine for my stomach....I don't think all of those things blended well." It was going to be a long night of discomfort and she was already exhausted thinking about it.
