A light drizzle seemed to tease the forest, a pitter patter sound against the leaves. The soothing and familiar scents of the trees and animal life were seasoned with an equally comforting scent of rain. While the white wolf dearly hoped it would not rain - much as the fauna and flora of the forest deserved it - he couldn't help but hope for it. Rain meant new life. New beginnings. It cleansed the earth itself.

But wet fur was not fun to travel with.

"Please do not rain on this lonely soul." Storm looked up towards the sky, getting a few large droplets to the face.

Snorting and shaking his head, Storm just chuckled, tilting his head to regard the sky again. "Serves me right for making such selfish request." He mused, continuing on his way but making more of an effort to stay under the thicker layers of branches and leaves.

It was while he was attempting this feat that he discovered the prints of another. Pausing, Storm lowered his head to sniff at the paw prints. They seemed fresh! Maybe there was another wandering traveler out and about during this fine day? With a little more excitement, Storm followed the prints, hoping to have them lead right to their owner.

The dark brown wolf paused in his travels, head tilted towards the sky as he felt the first few drops of rain. He frowned, knowing that while the rain would rejuvenate the forest it would make hunting a fair bit more difficult. Rain always intensified the smells of the forest, making it downright impossible to properly track anything when hungry. A good rain could make the entire movement of the woods come to a stop - hares scurrying to their burrows, deer huddling close to shake off the threat of cold.

Resolving himself to wait out the weather, Driftwood tucked himself against the trunk of a large tree. He was a large direwolf, tall but not without bulk. The forest seemed to suit him, his coat making it easy to blend into the natural environment. He'd find it easier if he could resist the urge to dye his pelt, but there were limits to what Driftwood would sacrifice for the sake of camouflage.

He had closed his eyes to wait out the rain in silence when he thought he heard something. A bi-colored eye crept open to scan his surroundings, and caught sight of the white wolf. "Huh, wasn't dreaming," he mumbled to himself, too quite for the words to be heard clearly.

"You're looking a little damp. This tree provides as good a shelter as any if you'd like to join me underneath it." Driftwood was fairly capable of reading others, and he was convinced this wolf posed no threat to him. If he did, well, Driftwood was just as confident that he could hold himself up in a fight. It wouldn't be the first time and probably not the last.

Storm was surprised when a voice spoke out to him. The white wolf paused where he was, turning to look in the direction the voice spoke, only to get splashed in the face once more. He shook himself to try and be rid of some of the gathering raindrops, offering the speaker - another wolf! - a lazy grin.

"It appears I am just a tad damp. But the forest needs her nourishment." He regarded the brown wolf, wondering if it had been he that left the paw prints that lead him here?

"That is very kind of you, good sir. I would very much like to share some shelter from the rain." Tail wagging lightly, Storm made his way over to the tree, being sure not to crowd the other. "Thank you very much for such a kind offer. I was hoping to be further in my travels today before the rain, but looks like it is not meant to be." Sitting down, Storm gave the brown wolf a gentlemanly dip of his head.

"I am Storm on the Horizon. But please, you may call me Storm." He took in a deep breath, letting the scents of the forest and the rain relax him. "What brings you to these parts of the fores, my friend?" Perhaps this wolf had seen some interesting places to visit here in the woods? Or belonged to a pack? Maybe even was a traveler like he was!

He chuckled softly to himself, amusement sparking in his multi-colored eyes. A small smile appeared upon his maw, the expression too gentle to be insulting or condescending. It was entertaining how formal the stranger was, but far be it from Driftwood to call the other wolf out on it. It was also... oddly refreshing. "That's a gentle way of sayin' you're not enjoying the rain," he answered the other with another small laugh. Any reservations he had about the wolf dissipated. It was clear that this one would not pose any sort of threat to Driftwood.

"You can't stop nature's course, so it's better just to sit back and go along with it." Driftwood agreed easily. Falling into casual conversation was a simple task for the brown wolf. He'd always been personable and sometimes even charming. "I don't think the rain will hold up for long, anyways, so perhaps you can still cover some ground before the day ends."

Driftwood quirks a brow at the name, "That's a mouthful. Your parents must have been fairly inventive. Storm it is - I'm Driftwood." Less of a mouthful, but true to his character. It made him wonder if he had fashioned himself after his name, as if because he was Driftwood he was meant to be a drifter. "I'm just passing through, seeing what the world has to offer me. It's what I've always done, and I haven't grown tired of it yet. You?"

In truth, the white wolf was not completely aware that he tended to be so formal. It was just the way he'd been raised and who he was. He was quite happy that this stranger seemed to be pleasant. And generous, making such kind offers as sharing a spot out of the rain. Storm returned the smile with a relaxed one of his own, a small chuckle in response to the strangers words.

Storm nodded his head in agreement. "I must agree! Even though I might have requested she wait a little longer for a lonely traveler such as myself." He laughed a little. "But we can clearly see she showed me up!"

"Yes, I do believe I shall get a little more travel time out of today." He mused, before giving the brown wolf his attention. Small talk was pleasant. Getting to know a new face was even more so!

He gave the brown wolf - Driftwood - a gentle smile. "Ah, yes. It is a bit of a mouthful. I believe that my parents saw a storm approaching when I was born and thought it quite fitting." He shrugged. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Driftwood." He dipped his head a little with a more formal greeting - he couldn't help it!

Intrigued, Storm's ears perked up a bit more. "A fellow traveler of the world! Kindred souls. I, too, am passing through. Wandering the world to see what all it holds. I don't know why, but there is just a part of me that keeps singing to the unknown. Like I am seeking something but am unaware as to what." Maybe he just needed a companion to travel with? Ah, the thought of it began to brew the beginnings of a thought. But he was too much a gentleman to approach that subject. Yet.

"Seen anything of interest in your travels yet?" He asked curiously instead.

"You could request it, but I doubt she would listen," Driftwood answered with an amused hum. Nature seemed to listen to no one, and that was likely for the best. If it did, some poor fool out there would wish for every day to be bright and sunny. Without rain, the world would eventually dry up. With that thought in mind, he'd let nature do whatever it pleased and he'd just carry himself along for the ride.

It was not necessarily common to come across another friendly face, and so Driftwood loathed the thought of chasing him away. Rather, he'd enjoy the company while he could before it was time for him to yet again move on. "The pleasure's mine," he drawled with a slight smile. He had almost been inclined to tip his head down to return the greeting properly - perhaps the pleasantries were contagious.

Ah, that explained why the other wolf was alone. The life of a wanderer was fun and exciting, but oftentimes also a lonely one. Most wolves eventually wanted to settle down, but Driftwood had never felt the same pull. In his past, he had a companion or two who traveled alongside him. Such things never seemed to last, and Driftwood was too kindhearted and understanding to blame them for wanting to settle. He just... couldn't. The world had too much to offer him to stay rooted to one place.

"The lands don't change so much, I've realized. This isn't my first time through these woods, and it will not be my last. The smells are similar, the sights alike. It's usually the wolves that are different, and the other animals I suppose. I could travel to entirely new lands, but the thing that always interests me the most are the individuals I meet along the way." He gestured then, with a small nod of his head, back towards Storm.

"Like you, someone who is a wanderer like me but for different reasons. We have different goals, it seems, but travel down the same path to reach them."

Storm just chuckled softly in agreement. Yes, he could request things of the weather, but he never expected her to listen. And besides, the forest needed it's rain. How else would the new life grow and prosper? Without the rain, the forest would probably begin to wither and die, much like he'd heard mention of the other forest... the red one.

Ah well, the weather was unpredictable and that made his travels that much more interesting.

Glancing back towards Driftwood, Storm was very much interested in the fact that this kind wolf was also a traveler. A drifter of the land. Wandering where his paws lead. The white wolf nodded his head as the other spoke, agreeing with some of what he said. But where Driftwood felt things didn't change much, Storm had to disagree. The forest was always changing! New trees beginning to grow. New life bounding about.

"I have not been through these woods quite as much, but I do faintly recognize some of the scents. Ah, but I do feel like it changes every time I visit. New life bounding about. Or old lives no longer around." Though, had yet to really meet other wolves around. Scent them, yes. See them? Not really.

"I must admit, you are one of the few wolves I have spoken with. I wish to meet more, and get to know the areas like they do. Learn what draws them there?" He paused, canting his head a little in thought. "We are very much the same yet different in our own ways. Have you found many that like to travel as we do?"

Driftwood hummed softly in consideration of the other wolf's opinion. Yes, he supposed that the forest exhibited subtle changes - fresh growth along the waterways, moss thickening over the trunks of trees. All could be observed if one took the time to turn their gaze towards it. Even as he recognized the changes, he could see so much of what still remained. Prey still traveled down familiar, worn paths where the underbrush would never regrow. Birds still nested in trees sturdy enough to hold their makeshift homes. He had not changed much either, having taken a familiar route through the forest in hope that he would find something to catch his eye.

Well, it seemed that he had. "Your view is quite different from my own, I look at these woods and they feel... familiar. I know this land, and the land itself holds little surprise for me." It was just the faces that changed, and he had seen many during his travels.

On that note, Storm mentioned how few wolves he managed to encounter during his travels. Driftwood reached back into his memory, recalling old faces and newer one. For a wolf so constantly on the move, he could not claim that he did not have friends or had shared company with others. "I know a few wolves who stick to this area, though if they are still here I could not say," he offered. Of course, he would have to find them again for Storm to even be able to meet them. But he did not that it would be terribly difficult. "I have gotten quite good at picking up on the scent of other wolves, it's a handy trick to have when you're trying to avoid pack territories."

It did not take much time to consider Storm's question, "Not many, but I have traveled with a few others before they decided to settle down. Every now and then I meet another roaming wolf, but not so many to make an actual note of it."

Oh, he had not considered that view point before. The white wolf contemplated what Driftwood said. Yes, for one that traveled much and visited the same areas often over a period of time, perhaps that is what they would think. And Storm did not deny that he could agree with this way of thinking. But his spirit seemed to enjoy finding the minute changes and new aspects of the land.

"Ah, but it is nice to hear different ways of one's thoughts. Familiar is a good feeling. I don't believe I have an area that feels familiar to me. Yet. But I have not paid as much attention to the land as you have, my friend." Storm let his gaze take in the forest around them, full of life and nourishment.

Glancing back at the brown wolf, he gave him a lazy grin. "I think my luck was just poor and I missed running in to wolves on my travels. But I am grateful for having met you!" He wagged his tail a little. "I wonder... would a kind soul as yourself, skilled in the ways of reading the land, be willing to travel with a free spirit such as myself? Perhaps even teaching me to learn the ways of the land as you have?"

Ah, there. He finally breached the subject that had intrigued him since meeting Driftwood. Wandering spirits that they were.

"I really can't say how long I would stay in your company. My feet just lead me on while my soul seeks out what it may." But a friend and some company would be ever so nice! The journey of a lone wolf could get quite lonely at times.

"It is a small comfort I take in as I travel through these lands, how the world around me does not change nearly as much as I feel I do." Driftwood preferred coastal areas or heavily wooded ones, and had only dared to travel further north on the rare occasion the fancy struck him. While he did not remain in one place for long, he felt as if he knew far more of the area than many other creatures.

The question the pale wolf posed to him dragged him from his thoughts, and his hazel eyes turned curiously to Storm. Despite his surprise, he could not help the small smile that tugged on the corner of his maw. He had traveled with others before, but it had been quite a while since his last companions had left him. The loneliness was not unbearable, but a journey was always better when shared with a friend. It was flattering, for a new friend to trust him enough to travel with him.

Driftwood could not find any reason to say 'no', nor did he want to. "Yeah, I think I would enjoy seeing a bit more of the world with you," he agreed with such ease that it was clear there had never been consideration for any other answer than 'yes'. "For as long as you wish to travel with me, you are welcome. I am not sure how much more I know than you, but we can share our knowledge between one another."

He lifted his gaze up, peering through the trees to get a good look at the sky above them, "And it seems as if our meeting was favored - it looks like the rain will let up soon. Our journey together will start sooner than either of us expected, I think."

Storm gave the other wolf a long considering look. That was a very interesting way to think about it. He'd never stopped to consider how much he himself might have changed. So perhaps, having something so familiar as a forest that never seems to change much would be quite comforting to a wary traveler. He rather liked the poetic thought of it.

"I see the wisdom in your words. It's almost like poetry." The white wolf observed, giving Driftwood a small laugh. "Perhaps, you should be a traveling poet!"

Still chuckling a little, there was certainly a small bit of tension in the white wolf after he asked his question. He greatly desired to travel with someone. His own loneliness had begun to grow, but not many wanted to travel as his feet seemed drawn to do. It was so very nice when he did meet other wolves, and spent an evening or a few days in their company. But ultimately, he found himself wandering again. Now, he'd found a wolf that enjoyed such a thing.

It was like the sun beginning to peek through the clouds, with the radiant expression Storm gave Driftwood. "You are most generous, and I greatly appreciate it! And, even if we do not have much to teach one another, at least there will be someone to chat with. Besides the trees." Or oneself. He'd been prone to speaking to himself aloud, so as not to feel lonely.

Storm gazed up at the sky. "It must have been fate, my friend. I am eager to be on the move once more. Let us see where our paws will lead us and what our journey holds."
