Others might have found it weird, but Kanja slept best outside. More specifically, he slept best under water. He'd taken up living in the lake within the dome, since the water there was less... 'artificial feeling' to the young native. He really had no issue sleeping under water, thanks to the gills on the sides of his neck, and he supposed that it was a great way to have privacy, if he ever didn't want to be around people.
It was late morning when he started to emerge from the water, but paused halfway when he spotted someone else. He wasn't familiar with the green-haired child. She was surely another of those genomes, since Kanja had yet to meet another native. He watched her a moment as he swam silently to the shore. He opened his mouth, filling his cheeks full of water before suddenly spitting the water at the poor girl.

It was her first time outside the ship. Drawn to the lake, Saga stood and watched the morning sun glimmer along the water and thought of the stories she’d read, the words slowly forming into pictures, ideas she could only begin to grasp the meaning of. Of swords rising out of lakes, magic and power bestowed. Her feet were bare, sinking into the mud. They were cold, which was a fun feeling. The air out here wasn’t stuffy or metallic. It was fresh and nice. She was lost in her own thoughts and didn’t expect the sudden water assault. Saga squeaked in surprise, hands flying to her face to wipe the water from her eyes and drag sodden hair from her face. As soon as her vision was clear, she was searching for the assailant. A figure in the water. “You!” She took a step into the lake. “Who are you?” She didn’t sound angry, just excited and curious.

"Oh!" She made an interesting noise, and Kanja couldn't help but laugh at her. "Cateful, the water gets deep very fast." She didn't appear to have gills like he did, so he didn't want her to fall in. "I'm Kanja. You're tiny. I haven't met anyone else my age. I was starting to worry there were only adults here." He swam closer to the bank so he could stand up. As he emerged, kanja took a moment to wring out some water from his hair and clothes. "So who are you?"

She heeded his warning, stopping in place with the water just past her ankles. “Kanja,” she repeated his name thoughtfully, let it roll across her tongue. She watched him as he swam, curious how it felt to be surrounded by water, and then her eyes went wide as he stood. No wonder he thought she was small! Her hands came together in front of her chest, clapping in eager excitement and wonder over his appearance. “Saga,” she told him. “My name is Saga.” Her smile was bright. “There are other children but... it’s quiet there. I’m new, I - can you breathe underwater?” She’d discovered the slits along his neck and all other thoughts slipped away. “You’re so interesting!”

His face brightened when she said his name. He was really happy to hear another kid say it. He stopped fussing with his hair and clothes, since he'd probably just be going right back into the water anyways. "Saga? That's a good name. I like it." He nodded, closing his eyes like he were in deep thought. He was about to say something about not seeing other children, but then his thoughts were derailed by her question. "Huh? Y-yeah, I can. ... I sleep in the lake!" He stated proudly, and pushed his hair away from his neck. "I've got gills, see? So I can breath under water just as easily as I can out of water. Is that weird? I haven't met anyone else who can do this. The adults say it's because I'm native to this planet, even though I was hatched in the dome. I'm still trying to figure it all out." He knew he was different from the genomes. He could tell just by looking at them. But figuring out iwhy he was different was hard. "Do you want to learn how to swim?" He dropped his hair and held a hand out to her. "I promise I won't let you sink or get hurt or anything."

“Thank you!” She was glad he liked her name. She was happy with it too, though it did feel weird to say that out loud, so it was better if someone said it for you. Saga looked him up and down, his blue skin so different from her own, his gills, the scales. He was lovely. Like a creature from a story. “I don’t think anything is weird here,” she said after a moment in thought. “I think you’re wonderful and talented.” Her hand lifted towards his, and then hesitated - “wait.” It wasn’t fear that had her step back out of the water, but good sense, as she shed her heavy dress and left only the underclothes. She wasn’t going to learn how to swim being weighed down. “Yes please. I would love to learn how to swim.” Saga stepped back into the water and offered her hand again, ready to feel something new.

His face brightened when she called him wonderful. "Just you wait! I'll be even more wonderful!" He stated proudly. "I just have to figure out... what I will be wonderful at." His smile was still playful as she reached her hand out to him, but then she pulled it back. Kanja blinked curiously and watched her shed the heavy garment. He looked down at his own simple robe. There wasn't a real reason he wore it, other then all the genomes seemed to wear clothes, so he wanted to as well. But his was different from theirs. But that was ok. He liked this. He grinned again and looked at Saga when she had finished disrobing and stated she wanted to swim. "Great!" He took her hand and started to lead her deeper into the water. "You're shorter then me." He stated, thinking. "Yeah, ok. The water will get up to your waist, and then the ground will suddenly drop and you won't be able to touch it anymore. So be careful. Don't go deeper then your waist unless I'm here, ok?" He stated firmly. He didn't want his new friend to get hurt because she fell into the water. He kept himself in front of her because he knew where the drop off was. When he stopped, he smiled. "Ok! Try laying down with your face in the water, and start kicking your feet. Lift your head when you need to breath, since you can't breath water."

Saga allowed him to lead her deeper, taking one slow step after another, feeling the way the muddy ground squelched around her toes and the cold tickle of the water as it travelled up her leg. Little bumps rose on her arms and she shivered, it was a warm day but the lake was chilly. “Okay,” she said, focused on his instructions. “I promise I won’t go deep on my own.” They stopped with the water at her waist and she squeezed his hand where it was holding hers. “This is so exciting!” Putting her face in the water seemed like an interesting prospect and she tried to bend but that was awkward, so she crouched until the water was at her chin and her green hair was drifting behind her. Saga was frowning with concentration, trying to work out how to put her head down and her feet up for kicking without losing control. She was still holding his hand tight when she gave her first attempt. Saga kicked wildly, splashing everywhere and flailing until she used Kanja’s hand to pull herself back straight, her hair a bedraggled mess and her face red in the cheeks. She coughed up some water and wiped more from her eyes. “I don’t... I don’t think I did that right...”

He knew it took a little getting used to the cold water, so Kanja walked at her pace until they needed to stop. He watched her curiously as she tried to submerge, first by bending over, then by crouching. He just kept his curiously peaceful smile on his face until she tried putting herself in the water and kicked madly. "Ah!" His startled noise was nearly drowned out with her splashing, and when she surfaced, Kanja stared at Saga a moment before he burst out laughing. She looked so silly now! Kanja carefully took one hand out of her grip and pushed her hair from her face. "That wasn't quite what we were gonna do first." His laughter calmed down some. "First we have to get you to float. I will need both my hands." He wiggled his fingers in her grip. "I'm going to hold my arms in the water and you're gonna lay on them. This way you wont drown and we can practice moving!"
