That, and he hated swimming. But, the fact was he wanted to check in on information he gathered during a previous raid of his. There was a pack with a plethora of treasure and since it was him who uncovered the information... well, it only seemed fair he went. He didn't see the reason in forcing someone else to do his dirty work.

Except, he couldn't go alone. It was a simple mission; make sure the information was correct and return immediately home to relay what he saw. But danger was abound in any adventure. So, he had selected a Sidewinder he needed to frankly get to know better if he was ever going to effectively use them for raids; Southern Shadow. She came recommended and had never caused problems, so why not?

They were close to the destination, but both their stomachs rumbled angrily. They had just felled a young deer together and were settling in for a meal when Sandstorm finally broke the silence. Of course they had communicated here and there, but Sandstorm had been so focused on ensuring they traveled safely he hadn't taken the time to actually do what he said he was out to do -- get to know Southern Shadow.

"How are you holding up?" Yes, real good conversation starter.

User ImageSouthern Shadow didn’t know how to express positive emotions. The closest she had was the silent bond between her and her sister, which required no extra communication. Even when accepted into the Sand Raiders, she had managed only a small “cool”, even though she knew this was a monumental step for the pair of them. Months on their own should have probably meant that they should be happy to be accepted and get meals and safety, but for whatever reason, Southern Shadow had taken it with the same energy as a nod of her head. Maybe part of her cynically expected this too to only be a small part of her life before they were rejected once again, so she couldn’t get her hopes up. But so long as Ominous Wind enjoyed a position in the pack, so would she, and she wouldn’t dare jeopardize it for either of them.

Especially because there were shinies.

She had been content with space between words, not exactly great at idle chatter herself unless it was to steer the conversation towards something she wanted. Midchew when Sandstorm broke the silence, she took her time, restraining the bone-deep urge to be a smartass to such a dumb question. Seriously, did she look like she was limping along or something? “M’ready to follow your lead,” Southern Shadow replied instead with a verbal shrug as she tore another piece of deer. “Where’d you even find out about these guys?”

In the silence that followed between his question and her answer he found his mind drifting. A memory flashed of a pale wolf and her laugh -- sharp and unhindered. Ah, he had been here before. His eyes flicked up, glancing at their surroundings. Now that he really looked he did recognize the area. No wonder he felt drawn to ask for them to rest here. Southern Shadow spoke and snapped him from his thoughts, his blue eyes focusing on her as he maintained his normal polite expression. Internally, he wanted to hiss at his stupidity. It had been a stupid question, hadn't it? Her answer was short and reminded him not to ask pointless questions.

"During one of the previous raids I managed to get information on the pack we're closing in on," he answered. "It seems one of the wolves we raided from used to be part of said pack until they were exiled." It wasn't just that, no. He had heard rumors before and the wolf only confirmed his suspicions. Packs who weren't careful with who came and left often had their secrets spread, and unfortunately it had reached the raiders.

"We're only here to scout for the moment," he added, glancing up. She was a new recruit, and Sandstorm hadn't had much time to get to know her. He really should if he was going to continue taking her on raids, really. He just didn't know what to say to her. She had always been a quieter sort; a wolf who often answered things with little enthusiasm. It wasn't like he could talk, most didn't really know who he was past the mask, either.

"I don't think I ever got the chance to ask; what was it that drew you to the Sand Raiders? I always am curious about new recruits and what interested them."
