xxxxMoonlit Snowfall crawled through the fall foliage, orange and brown leaves crunching lightly under his feet as he stalked to his destination.
xxxxHe had been training under Two Tone and with Clay Fox for a few moons now, honing his hunting skills that had kept him alive until he'd been brought to Dawnstar. He had always been a passable hunter, able to catch what was needed to survive but having mostly 'taught' himself through trial and error after his mother abandoned him there were many things that the Dawnstar alpha was able to teach him and he absorbed each lesson knowing that every new thing he learned was one new thing to give him an advantage over his prey.
xxxxToday was a test of sorts, nothing official as he was still too young to advance ranks in the pack, to see what the pup could do on his own and what of Two Tone's teachings had truly sunk in.
xxxxMoon focused himself, taking in a deep sniff of the air. There wasn't much on the breeze just yet, the faintest whiffs of wolf and rabbit but nothing particularly close or fresh. He growled in frustration before looking to the treetops, watching the sun to see how long it'd been since he'd set out. He was about halfway through his hunt time and had nothing to show for it.
xxxxWith his pride stinging he bounded through the underbrush for a few yards, letting his frustrations out the ground as his nails tore up the dirt beneath him. And almost as abruptly as he'd started, he stopped. Dead in his tracks.
Snap.
xxxxHe turned his ears and head, straining for the sound to break the silence in the trees again. He heard the rushing of paws somewhere far to his west, but something smaller to his north a bit. He shook out the energy returning to his calm prowl and started towards the sound of odd scurrying. This hunt would have a happy ending, after all, he thought smugly.
xxxxHis attitude changed rapidly, however, upon finally spotting his quarry. Blood trailed after it as it made its panicked escape from the wolf he assumed he'd heard taking off earlier. The rabbit was struggling to hit a running speed, though Moon couldn't quite determine why, and was quickly running out of steam. Moon followed it at a distance until he finally saw it collapse in a shivering heap, blood now seeping through its white fur.
xxxxHe pushed through the bushes, approaching the injured Hare quietly. Head lowered he tried to get its attention and not have it try to scramble away, "Are you injured?" an obviously answered question, though Moon could not think of what else to say to the pitiful creature heaving on the ground. The hare failed for a moment, sending a short spray of blood across Moon's forelegs causing him to jump back for a moment in surprise. The rabbit's eyes darted from Moon to the underbrush and as it pushed to stand it slipped and crashed to the forest floor, exhausted.
xxxxMoon gently picked up the rabbit, seeing now where the blood spray originated from, a wound dropping where a foreleg had once been. He carried the rabbit to a clearing with better lighting and carefully wrapped the smaller creature in leaves, hoping to stop the blood from leaving long enough to get him to Dawnstar.
--------------------------------------------
xxxxFull moons passed as Moon nursed his found friend back to health. The wound healed, though it was not the prettiest of scars, and the rabbit began to learn how to maneuver on three legs versus the four he'd been born with and moon found himself worried that once the healing was done his companion would leave him as so many others he'd grown close to had. Though Two Tone had taken him under his guidance and accepted him into the pack he always kept being alone in his mind with the chance that he would be left that way again.
xxxxTo his surprise, the rabbit, now almost as spry as he had been, stuck by his side. Moon hadn't intended to gain a companion that hunt but truth be told he was glad he had, White Clover, as he came to call the rabbit, was a welcome addition to his life; giving him someone other than Two Tone to confide in.
