✦ Gray was enveloped in total darkness. It weighed upon their shoulders as if a starless sky had come crashing down, and they were the singular soul to keep it from crushing the world underneath. It was suffocating. Every muscle in Gray's body screamed out in agony, but they could not yield. Not because of some stubborn or noble nature; though their temperament may have had a part to play in it, but more so because of some instinctual urge. To lose to this crushing void would mean to lose themselves completely. The thought of that tugged at Gray's core, and kept them planted firmly in grim determination.
Within that darkness came an amber glow; the color of dying coals, but the light would grow till the void was ablaze with hues of orange and red. In the new churning chaos of fiery light and inky blackness a world began to form. A barren earth dotted with gnarled and boney trees spread out from Gray's feet, and an ashen sky lit by an eclipsed sun spread across the horizon. The dead world trembled as haunted voices echoed from the shadows; their whispers held an unintelligible question, but Gray already knew what they wanted.
"I am ready," the lieutenants voice appeared to be snatched by some unseen wind. The silence that followed soaked up every syllable as though Gray spoke into a pillow rather than the field. The young demon's eyes locked to some movement in the distance. A shadow approached, slow and listed. The being was nothing but pure darkness, but Gray could still make out the outlines of what it might have worn in the past. The rounded shoulders and chest straps of leather armor. A tattered belt with three empty scabbards. Its hair was long, and the figure feminine. Gray thought that If not for the soul crushing gaze and featureless face she might have been beautiful once.
Sweat beaded upon Gray's brow by the time the creature stopped. Its hollow eyes bored into the Lieutenant General's violet hues. Gray's legs trembled, but they lowered their body into a crouch; legs braced for the inevitable conflict that would ensue. The shadow hissed and dropped into a mirrored pose. Its empty sockets flickered with an ethereal crimson glow, and without any further prompts the monster let out a battle cry and launched toward Gray with supernatural speed.
Their battle shook the world within the void. Gray's heart beat franticly, and sweat hissed upon their burning skin. The demon's lungs screamed with each ragged breath, and every one of their senses were stretched to their limits. Boiling blood splashed across the cracked earth. Flames erupted from the sprays, but the shadow was unfazed as the heat battered over its form.
More demonic ichor was dashed upon the ground. Gray's vision blurred as a torrent of flame five meters high erupted toward the shadow. It howled in anguish, and Gray only had enough time to take a single breath before another bone crushing strike sent them reeling. This desperate struggle for survival lasted for what could have been mere minutes, or even days. The eclipsed sun did not move within this world, and so time meant nothing. Only each second Gray still breathed mattered. Though this wasn't much of a fight anymore, but more of a massacre.
After an eternity Gray lied upon the dead earth, defeated. Their body bruised, and bones broken; flesh torn and scattered across the battlefield. Earlier their body had felt as if it were on fire, but now all they felt was the cold emptiness of the void. The shadow hissed in what might have been disappointment as it hoisted Gray's broken body into the air.
Their crimson and violet hues locked one last time, and a sneer spread across Gray's bloody lips.
"Till next time..." The shadow raised its clawed hand and let out one final cry before plunging its fist through the demons chest. Gray's vision began to fade, and the world within the void crumbled back into nothingness...
Gray opened their eyes to see that morning light had pierced the clouds. The sound of swords clanged nearby, and demons barked orders at one another as their daily routine began. Sweat clung to the lieutenants skin, and drenched their baggy pants and loose tank top. Gray leaned back on the stone they perched upon with a soft sigh that parted their lips.
"Still a long way to go, I would think."━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
