He was hungry.

This was nothing new. Pike was a big wolf with a bottomless pit for a stomach. At least he wasn’t starving and while he wasn’t starving he was lazy. Which meant the local rabbits didn’t have to worry about his presence.

They ignored him where he rested at the edge of the field, watching their tasty little bodies hop around without a care in the world. Every now and then Pike thought about making an effort but his head was in the dirt and his legs were stretched out, the sun hitting his side just right.

He’d find his mother and grandmother later and get them to feed him. There was no need to make a fuss right now.

Gilded Cloud snorted mutely to clear the scent and lifted her head. Her ears pricked to catch the sounds drifting around her, attentive. She left her footfalls silent and moved with the easy grace of a stalking predator before settling neatly in a crouch.

The wolf didn't make it a habit to intrude on claimed grounds, packless as she was. Generally, the decision was out of preference to stay away from the hassles of territorial disputes rather than the offense of the toes it'd step on. Gilded Cloud preferred not to bring trouble down on her own head when it needn't be, but she was confident enough when it came to toeing the lines. Sometimes, a lot of the times, she didn't particularly care.

A hesitant crack of a stray leaf sounded.

Cloud lunged out of the foliage and snapped her jaws around the neck of a tired doe she'd chased several miles. Toying with her food was an idle pastime, but once it hit the riverbed and she'd smelled another wolf, she decided to simply end it rather than have another wolf claim her prey.

There was a commotion. It spread like a ripple through the surrounding area. The birds cried out at the sudden death, a chase brought to its end. The rabbits of Pike’s field all startled, streaks of brown and grey as they fled back to their burrows as if whatever beast was on the hunt would come for them too.

It was only when all his company had disappeared that Pike’s ears pricked and his nose lifted to scent the air. Blood. His jaw opened in a grin, tongue lolling out. Food. The lazy wolf finally rose, stretched the kinks out of muscles and headed towards the smell at a brisk trot. He was loathe to leave his lovely warm spot but this seemed worth the effort.

He reached the riverbank and found his target a little upstream.

A stranger down in his neck of the woods.

Pike’s gaze barely lingered on the female, instead focused on the tasty looking doe that had been brought down in the riverbed. His mouth watered.

“That’s a real big meal for one lass,” he called out, finally giving the other wolf a decent once over. Pretty. With any luck she’d be easily spooked by a lone male and would take off without any trouble.
