One-Word Prompts
Waiting for a role play response? Need a break from writing your novel? Just need to get the creative juices flowing?
One-Word Prompts is the game for you!
Simply post and make sure to add Gaia's "Roll a Dice" action and select 1 100-sided die to get a number from 1-100. Whatever word is associated with the number that you roll is your prompt.
Prompts can be as long or short as you want them to be. It can be a scene, it can be poetry, it can be anything that you need it to be as long as it was inspired by the prompt. Prompts do not need to be written immediately after rolling for a number. You can take some time if you need to. But the prompt response also does not need to be long. Even 100 words is fine. smile
Nothing much to it. Now get writing! wink

96. Collect
Personal Goal: Write quickly. Less than 500 words. Not sad or dark. “Mama!”
Pembroke blinked out of her reverie to look over where her son played in her father’s small backyard. He was a boy of three years now and had the energy and curiosity to go with it. Currently, he was darting around the yard, bending down occasionally to pick something up.
“What are you doing, baby?” Pembroke asked, getting up from where she had been sewing underneath the large oak tree. She didn’t have the money to buy Daniel a new pair of pants so she had been busy sewing up patches and reinforcing the seams to make his most recent pairs last. She couldn’t ask her father for more money this month. He was already uptight about letting her and her son stay with him and his new wife and her children from another marriage.
“Collect flowers, mama!” Daniel said gleefully, and he proudly held up a fistful of what he considered flowers. Mostly, they were dandelions or other weeds that impersonated flowers, but young Daniel was proud of his bundle just the same.
Pembroke smiled at her son. She was a young mother—only nineteen years old. The world told her repeatedly that she had made mistakes and that she was a failure. But looking into the eyes of her child, all those fears and doubts that usually screamed within her mind faded away into echoes. “Oh really? And why are you collecting flowers, Danny?”
“For mama!” Daniel replied as he ran up to her with a childish squeal. He laughed and hugged her legs, clothed in stained jeans.
“Those are for me?” Pembroke said with exaggerated aw and wonder. “What are you giving me flowers for, Danny?”
“Love mama!” The three-year-old pronounced proudly, “You! Flowers for you!” With that said, he held up his fist holding the bundle of flowers and weeds.
The young woman smiled and gently accepted the flowers from the tiny hand—now dirty from playing in the dirt. In a few minutes, Pembroke’s step-mother would be yelling at her for letting Daniel get dirty by playing in the yard. She might then get berated for being lazy and irresponsible. But in this moment, as she bent down to give her son a hug and a heartfelt, “Thank you,” she found peace and solace. The world was not always kind and had certainly not always been a friend to her, but with little Daniel at her side, Pembroke knew they would make it through.
