Your character(s) hear a whisper behind them...but when they turn, nobody or nothing is there...

The forest's trees soon surrounded Ramsey. The darkness was oppressive. It took Ramsey a moment to realize they couldn't even hear their friends anymore. Had they really gone that far in already?
The hybrid shook themselves of the fear that tried to crawl down their spine. It was nothing. The stories were just stories. All just a story to keep kids out of the forest. A forest that probably just had a few wild animals to be wary of and a strong river or something. Ramsey had always had a knack for animals so if they came across one it should be no problem. It would be really cool to come out of the forest with a new familiar. That would definitely show how brave I am, Ramsey thought to themselves.
When Ramsey felt they had gone in far enough, they stopped and stared at their watch. All they had to do was stay in the forest longer than the last person. So far the record was a minute. According to Ramsey's watch it had already been ten since they started walking in.
"Huh," Ramsey muttered with furrowed brows. "I guess I should head back." They turned themselves around to face where they had come and started walking back. Thankfully Ramsey had been smart enough to stay in a straight line so making it back to the edge of the forest shouldn't be too hard.
The forest suddenly felt quieter. Ramsey couldn't suppress a shiver at the unease they felt with the silence. Then they heard a whisper next to them and a rustling. The voice was hard to make out but it might have been one of their friends. Did someone head in to find them and then decide to play a trick? Well, jokes on them, Ramsey with their keen hearing would be able to track them down before they can scare them.
Game on, Ramsey thought before taking off after the voice.
