Evangeline looked to her companion with horror in her eyes. “You wa...wanna do WHAT now!?!?” She swallowed hard and looked from the forests’edge to her friend and back again. She shuffled her feet in the road dust and her wings shook in agitation. “Isn’t this another one of THOSE ideas again- the ones that get us into trouble?” OK now she was whining, but none the less had a point- or so she told herself. But this was nothing that couldn’t be talked out. I mean true she was a bit curious as to why the forest was “forbidden” but they had to have a reason for “forbidding” it right? So it made much more sense to stay and enjoy the festivities. She held out her pail of goodies showing its half empty status. “There’s loads more treats to get, and I think there has to be a reason the forest is forbidden……” Her wings tucked in tight to her body as she prepared to stand her ground. “ So we should stay here! “She emphasized with a foot stamp. What she DID NOT expect is what happened next- Sphinx who had been holding her hand took off for the forest without a single word. Wings flairing with a small scream she tried to slow her friend down Evangeline was still pulled along with, she couldn’t fight back too hard after all Sphinx wasn’t worried about getting hurt in the course of an adventure.

Sphinx listened to her friend whine. The hybrid's pale blue eyes were wide and almost dewy as she tried to convince her friend. "Come oooooooooon Eva! How could we possibly get in trouble? We won't go too far, I promise." She gave her best pleading look; the one she had been practicing to use on her parents if she ever got into trouble. "It's just a forest. If it was really forbidden, they wouldn't hold the festivities so close, right? And calling it forbidden just means they want us to go in." Honestly, if you didn't want kids to go somewhere, call it the hall of homework or something. Maybe the swamp of study hall. Now THOSE were scary names. "If you really want candy, I'll give you what's in my bucket… AFTER we check out the forest." Her bucket wasn't quite half full, and she was sure she could fill it up again after exploring the forest. But it didn't seem like Eva was going to budge on this matter. So with an impish smirk, she tightened her grip on her friend's hand and began to run towards the edge of the trees. This was an adventure! There had to be something good in the trees, and Sphinx was going to find it! She didn't slow down until they had breeched the line of trees marking the start of the forest. She didn't want to trip, and wanted even less for Eva to trip. After all, her friend was probably going to whine and cry if she got dirty or hurt. "See? It's not so bad. It's just trees." She looked over her shoulder with a toothy grin.

It was all Evangeline could do to keep from tripping with the blistering pace that was being set. 'She wasn't exactly athletic and the path was uneven and it was dark and spooky and she could barely look where she was going and Sphinx kept pulling and... and.... and...' she thought, trailing off as the headlong rush was finally slowed. She wanted to chastise her friend, she wanted to whine and cry, but more than either of those she wanted to breathe. So wheezing it was that met the toothy yet endearing grin. Pulling hard she stopped them and after a full minute bent over puffing she turned to look behind her. They'd run so far that the lights of the festival were gone....and all she could see were trees. She spun to the front- and all there were was trees. Spinning in a slow circle she saw that there were just trees clustering in the darkness...... As she came full circle she cocked her head and pointed her now free hand to the tree on their right- "you're right- just trees! And that one even looks like it has a face, see the hole for the one eye, the knot for the other and the way the bark splits makes a mouth......-Oh wait! Darn you- you Sphinx- I'm supposed to be mad at you for pulling me in here! " She treated her friend to an almost comically cross looking face with her arms folded and a foot tapping- just to make SURE it was known she was upset. "Well, what do you have to say for yourself?" Evangeline asked in a teacherish tone of voice- a rather good one she thought.

Sphinx paused and smiled, even while Eva huffed and puffed to catch her breath. Sphinx was used to running much longer distances then that, so she was hardly even breathing hard. She always ran around with her siblings and would try her best to get into her family's business… and then run away as fast as possible when they shooed her off. As Eva started spinning around to look at the trees, Sphinx scratched at one of the trees with a rock to make a mark pointing back the way they came. "If we do this on trees now and then, we can find our way back, ok?" She wanted to put her friend at ease. When Eva finally acknowledged that the woods were just trees, she grinned, and even laughed when the other hybrid pointed out one that looked like a face. Sphinx did her best to mimic the face, scrunching up her face and trying to twist her mouth into the right shape. As Eva tried to scold her again, Sphinx just grinned again. "You can't be mad at me. I'm too cute, right?" She poked her cheeks as she smiled. "Besides, it's not like there's anything bad happening. And look, there are birds over there. Don't those branches they're on look like arms? Oooooh… hey Eva? What if a forest is just a dryad graveyard?"

As Evangeline spun she noticed her friend marking something on the tree- she nodded warily at the explanation….” Ok, If you say so……” She trailed off ‘I’m already lost I think’ she murmmered to herself dubiously. But her train of thought was thankfully derailed as Sphinx made faces, almost making her laugh, but only almost because she was still too worried to do so- but she couldn’t hide the smile as her friend posed, all she could do was shake her head ruefully in defeat. Well it couldn’t be too bad because there were birds…..and some other night sounds….she turned to look around, but at the last words Sphinx spoke she twisted so fast she nearly fell as she looked around wildly- searching the trees for dryads….. dead or alive- spilling treats out of her cauldron in her haste. Her wings tucked tight against her body, her tails around her legs with her ears back. Her heart raced and she edged closer to Sphinx- “Iiii…..I Don’t like this place. Lets go…….” She stood behind the freshling and gently pushed forward, still looking about wide eyed with pupils the size of plates. Her hand flew up and, fighting the urge to grab and make a fist in her friends sweater, instead her clenched hand made to her mouth and most deliberately she did NOT suck her thumb. Yet still she sucked a knuckle she waited,as she so often did, for her friend to make the move.

Ah, Eva smiled. That means she isn't really mad, so everything is ok. Sphinx just kept grinning at her friend… until she seemed to get really spooked by what Sphinx had just said. "…You know I was kidding, right? But how cool would it be if like, the trees grew from dead dryads? OH! What if dryads were trees before they became dryads?" She didn't know much about dryads, so she was just making things up. "Like before stone embuing, what if they embued trees?" She pointed to one tree. "I bet that one would have had a beard." The tree she was pointing at had long leafy branches that hung low to the ground, it was an old willow tree. "And that one would have been very kind and motherly." She was completely unfazed by her friend's fear, and turned, putting an arm around Eva. Sphinx didn't think it was scary at all, and she was actually quite fascinated with the prospect that the trees could have been dead dryads. She looked back to the knotty tree that Eva had pointed out first. "You were a class clown, weren't you, Mr. Tree? You're making funny faces still."

Something has happened.... While the two freshlings fret about the singular tree, something seems to be...moving. Behind them, somewhere between the trees. A hulking shape, a soft gruffing. Before they will be able to get a good look, the large mass would lumber away.

Eva hid even more as Sphinx spoke about the trees being dead dryads- or about them becoming ones. "Th.....that makes them seem awfully alive, and gives them the potential to be VERY alive, Im not sure I like it so much." And with that she whimpered. In her head things were starting to go very down hill.
As she was offered and arm about her she used it to hide under, tucking her wings tighter to her back, ducking her head into her friends shoulder and trying to take deep breaths. As she laid her head down her hair spilled over her face 'its like a curtain' she thought 'between this and Spinx I almost feel safe again'
Addressing the same tree as her companion, through her shield of hair, she added. " Though your face isnt exactly 'ha ha ha' funny- more like y-......" Her head snapped up as her soft words had covered the quiet noises of movement but then a branch snapped and she noticed. She turned around and in her haste dropped her candy cauldron, using both hands to clear away the hair from her face as she searched for the source of the movement- Then another noise, a soft animal noise- and "THERE!" She pointed and something Big moved behnid the trees, in the shadows out of sight.
"IT MOVED" She said shrilly " I saw it and heard it and it moved and there are things out there in the trees. She spun to Sphinx and grabbed onto her friend and started running, away from the form in the trees, as fast as she could go pulling Sphinx hard to make her come with.

Sphinx smirked at her friend, sort of pleased that she was spooking her, but also felt maybe a liiiiiittle guilty. Just a tiny bit. She was about to apologize when Eve shrieked and grabbed her arm, trying to pull her out of the woods. "WHOA WHOA! HEY!" Sphinx put the breaks on so Eva couldn't pull her too far. "Eva, come oooon, there can't be anything dangerous here." Well, sure there could be, but she wasn't really concerned about that. "I wanna know what that was." She was staring where they had been standing, trying to see into the trees. "You now, what if it's a familiar that's lost and scared? We should help it. Or maybe someone from school who was being stupid and didn't mark the trees like I was doing." She wanted to be brave and strong like her family and make them proud of her. Sphinx took a tight hold on Eva's hand and walked her back to where she dropped her candy bucket. Sphinx set hers down as well. "We can leave these here as a marker." She said before scratching up a near by tree again, pointing towards the way out. "Hello in there?" She called suddenly. "Are you lost?"

Ignoring the yell of her friend Evangaline tried to keep running, pulling hard but she didn’t make it very far because Sphinx went dead weight on her and there was little she could do short of dragging the other freshling. Which for a moment she legitamately thought about and in that moment she paused and her friends words began to sink in. “You have a point but……” she trailed off dubiously but allowed herself to be lead back to her spilled treat pail. Dimly she noticed that she had kept a hold of hers. She nodded slowly her wings still drawn tight to her. This time she paid much more attention to Sphinxs' marking of the tree. It was time to be serious.
She turned to the two buckets and dumped the remainder of hers into the others. “We can drop one of these every so often to help us know where to look for the marks on the trees” She said proud that she’d managed to contribute. And with that she dropped a sweet below the mark her friend had made. “We can help you!” She sang out with a cry of her own. “Follow our voices!” She was still a bit worried, she had really seen something moving- but it COULD have been a familiar or someone lost. So turning to Sphinx she grabbed her hand and together they walked towards the noise…….

Something has happened.... There is a momentary silence. Then, the soft gruffing and huffing returns, only this time from farther away. It seems like whatever it it might be returning, lured in by the voices...But there's noting to actually see.

"Hey yeah, that's a good idea! Oh wait..." She grabbed one candy out. "That's my favorite." She tucked it into her pocket. Sphinx picked up the empty bucket and started marching towards the sounds. She heard the grunts and couldn't help the grin. This was... exciting. She knew she should be scared but... well, she'd seen uncle Vanna mad. Nothing could be scarier then that... right? Keeping a tight grip on Eva's hand, Sphinx marched deeper. "Hellooooo? Come out come out wherever you are~" she called in a sing-song voice.
