If there was ever a time to admire the rising peaks of the early dawn light, it was now. That barest hints of moisture still clung to the air and kept the rocks cool, if only for a little longer. The faint blanket would soon dry under the sun until it cooked, wrapping the peaks in an intense heat that would make shade precious and drive cats to eagerly dip into the river.
It was far too late to bid goodbye to the river though.
Thorncoat made a quiet noise of consideration as he eyed the bone dry rock bed where water once babbled. Far, far too late.
Before Thorncoat picked his path, before he wrapped himself too far into his wistful meanderings, he had a partner to consider. How rare, truly. Thorncoat went on patrols with others, obviously, but just as often walked on his own. This was no normal patrol, though.
"Dawnstride, here would you like to pay your respects?" Thorncoat asked, pausing to converse, peering in interest at his companion.

It was just as unusual for the ginger tom to walk with a companion, yet here they were. He knew these woods like the pads on his paws, and the idea of leaving them made that comfort ring hollow. Maybe some more adventurous or optimistic cat would see adventure in the coming journey. Dawnstride only saw the yawning unknown, and a whole host of situations that he didn't yet know how to adapt to.
Thorncoat's words drew his attention. Gazing his way with verdant eyes, Dawnstride caught himself wondering just how the other tom would deal with the migration. Better than himself, perhaps? Or worse?
"Seems like an odd time for reverence, doesn't it?" Though the words came out in jibe, the male put a little skip into his step, joining his partner by the empty riverbed. For just a moment, his expression indicated that he'd joined Thorncoat in wistful yore. "Nothing we do can bring it back," he meowed, an odd mix of emotion coloring the words. "The twolegs have seen to that." And simultaneously kicked their clan out of the home they had held for time immemorial. Probably didn't even know they'd done it, either. But then, who could know with twolegs...
