Some days, Ruby just couldn’t be bothered to sit through another droning lecture about the history of Below while the infection clawed at the inside of her head. The medication suppressed the urges, mostly, but it didn’t quell the restlessness, the shaking of her foot and tapping of her pencil when all she wanted to do was prowl and move, the infection a fire in her veins. So today, she excused herself to go to the restroom, shrugging on a leather jacket to cover the scars on her arms, and she just kept walking until she was off campus. It wasn’t long before she found herself at the shopping mall. Dead quiet on a weekday morning, sleepy shopkeepers were rearranging their wares and spacing out behind cash registers, perfect for a teenage troublemaker who didn’t want to be noticed. What she didn’t expect was to bump into someone who seemed around her age.

“You skipping, too?” She gave the goblin a feral grin.
