Figure Drawing

Gesture, Proportion & Mannequinization:

Remember that the purpose of this curriculum is that you actually do the exercises. Practice is the only way to improvement. You can watch all the tutorials out there, but if you don't put them to practice, you won't get anywhere.

Lessons by Love Life Drawing:

Lessons by Proko:

See the complete figure drawing series here and try to copy Proko's examples. Then use what you've learned and draw some quicksketches of figures you can find on Pinterest.

Loomis Figure Drawing:

Andrew Loomis created and documented one of the most effective and useful approaches to drawing figures. His book on figure drawing and anatomy will serve as the precursor to more in-depth human anatomy (Bridgman) and rhythmic abstraction (Reilly).

Don't rush through this. Just work at it every day. Repeat exercises where necessary. To be able to draw from imagination, we have to commit the exercises to memory and that takes a lot of repetition of the same thing over and over again. Be patient and kind to yourself - no "I just can't get it right, I'm no good" kind of self-talk! If you can turn your repetitive practice into a sort of meditation, you'll do really well. Keep your reasons for studying art close - they will motivate you.

Also, feel free to post in this thread if you feel stuck.

PDF

I'm not sure how long these PDFs will be available to the public domain like this, so download and print them if you can. I have mine stored in a file.

Assignment:
Copy the drawings in the book. After studying the book intimately, create your own character using everything you've learned from Loomis so far. You may also use a photo as reference, draw a friend or your reflection in the mirror, or use it to create a copy of your favourite character.

The Legendary Charles Bargue Drawing Course:

This is the drawing curriculum most famous ateliers are based on. Here, we copy plates and statues. It's wonderful for learning the subtle nuances of the human body in a classical way. Think Michelangelo!

PDF

Assignment:
Bargue's course is meant to be copied repeatedly. The introduction in the book will explain exactly how to make the best use of it.

Personally, I don't find copying Bargue boring at all. Each drawing looks beautiful on it's own and with all the others - even if you're a complete beginner to figure drawing!

The Reilly Method:

The Reilly method is by far, in my opinion, the most advanced and effective approach to figure drawing. It's a bit of a headache, but once you get the hang of it, drawing believable figures will be a breeze. This method explains the rhythms of the human figure in a way that makes rendering and shading make a lot of sense. It's also the best way to capture the true likeness of a person and pose.

However, Frank Reilly's papers were scattered. The best book I've found on the subject is this one here. And John Ennis created a blog exploring many of the ideas used in the Reilly method of training, so be sure to check that out to supplement and guide your figure training.

A useful Udemy course.

Jeff Watts' atelier teaches in the Reilly lineage, so be sure to check out his YouTube channels. His live-streams are helpful, too.

Assignments:

Draw over 12 figures using the Reilly abstraction lines (like Rebecca Rand did).
Draw 12 figures using the Reilly method and leave the abstraction lines visible.
Draw 12 figures using the Reilly method, and render them to a finished sketch.

Ruthless repetition with this method will guarantee your success! Don't give up!
