Art fundamentals remain the same across all mediums. A skilled artist can manipulate these fundamentals in ways that make an artwork a good piece of art and an accurate representation of your ideas.
Use this thread to discuss the challenges you've encountered while doing these assignments, to ask for advice, to link to your sketches for critique, and to give advice and critique to those who have submitted their assignments here.
Choose your medium and do these exercises and drills in that medium. If you want to paint with oils, start with gouache - it is cheaper and works more or less in the same way despite being an acrylic medium. This is about learning a new artistic language.
Week 1: mileage + getting started with your chosen medium
Lessons:
Aside from straight lines, drawing S and C curved lines repetitively will start building your muscle memory so that you can draw and paint confidently, with accuracy and speed. Remember to draw from the shoulder, be bold and confident in your line-making. Otherwise we risk creating "chicken scratches."
It is also a great idea to experiment with different types of lines and fully explore what your medium can do in terms of line-making.
You can also draw differently angled lines within a circle.
Practice values by creating a value chart with 7 squares, shading them from lightest to darkest values. Do this with whatever colour paint if you are going to use paint, too.
Then, create a still life using simple objects and paint/draw them in monochrome.

Week 4: texture
Lessons:
Texture is light that reflects onto, becomes caught on, or bounces off the differences in smoothness in a surface. Light & values are extremely important here.
Use your chosen medium to complete these exercises.
Assignments:
Complete a drawing of a still life in monochrome. Your assignment must include most if not all of the following textures (also called patinas): a) chrome b) silver c) wood d) porcelain e) glass f) scales g) fur h) cloth of your choice (textures in drapery will be covered in the figure drawing curriculum, so keep it simple for now) i) plant matter j) feathers k) hammered copper l) bronze m) stone
Week 5: colour
Lessons:
Assignments:
Layer your colours, blend and create gradients to experiment with the different combinations available to you. Some watercolours granulate. Some copics become lighter when placed over others. It is usually recommended to work from light to dark except when working with opaque mediums like oil and gouache. With these drills and experiments, we learn how to use our mediums well. For medium-specific techniques, you’re welcome to share what you’ve found online in a separate threat for that medium.
Create a simple still life, as before, and work with a limited colour palette.
The Zorn limited palette:
Warm/Cool limited palette:
It's a good idea to complete a few in each palette. Repetition and deliberate practice will result in successful training!
You may add texture if you choose, but focus more on creating beautiful colour harmonies, using colour to create contrast where the focal point in your focal point is, and keeping in mind colours that reflect off objects.

How to submit your assignments:
Keeping our goals and dreams and our big WHY in mind every step of the way will motivate us through the stumbling blocks and boring repetition.
My goal with doing this course: Why I make art: Chapter of assignments submitted: Assignments: (links to your DA folder for the course, or images in spoilers) What I learned & struggled with doing these assignments:

wow I'm really bad at keeping with assignments!! ;u; While trying to do the box challenge, I actually watched one of the Sycra videos on Iterative Drawing - which totally inspired me to do some of his exercises!! So I kind of got distracted... I'm definitely not analytical sweatdrop
Here are some (kind bad!) pictures of my current working sketchbook! Just some sloppy practice, I hope I'll get better at producing more practice/ content~
My goal with doing this course: I want to feel and see myself improve! Push my boundaries and finally feel good about my art.
Why I make art: Because I love it! Art has been my companion since I was little, it's also been in my family for generations.
Chapter of assignments submitted: Like... 1/4 of week 1 ;; I swear I'm not a bad student!
Assignments:
What I learned & struggled with doing these assignments: I definitely need to make more time to just sketch. I've started bringing my working sketch book to work with me so I can doodle in my free time - I need to work harder on practicing.
