Aleksei's obsession with cleaning is often blamed on his mother's obsessive hoarding and love of filth. He was often made fun of for being smelly and dirty, all because of his mother. He spent the rest of his childhood living with his father and step-mother in a different state.
Even though he's seen doctors for his various mental quirks he hasn't made much progress. During times of high emotional stress his need for things to be clean is at its worst and his mind while under stress will often pick one thing to obsess about. He's had his ups and downs with school not for lack of intelligence or mental dexterity, but would struggle to focus during periods of emotional distress. This caused him to be held back a year, graduating high school at nineteen. He failed to get into his college of choice and since then has worked whatever part time jobs he could get.
Working at the Red Rum Hotel gives him a sense of purpose and clarity, even if his is just a maid.
