Dani was putting the silverware out on the table for dinner; it was one of her nightly chores. She was wondering exactly what was for dinner, when Dad and Drew came in from buying Drew’s motorcycle. Dad went to Mom and Aunt Dia, while Drew went to Dria. Something weird was going on, because everyone left the room. Figured that she’d be the last to be told. She finished setting the dinner table, and listened to Mom and Dad loudly discussing the motorcycles. Aunt Dia made a few comments here and there. Hold on the motorcycles? As in more than one? How did Drew get more than one motorcycle?
Dria and Drew came back from the garage. Dria was happy and Drew was no longer stressed but still happy. Dani sat down at the table as she was finished setting it. Dria came over and whispered in her ear, “Come with me.” Now, she would be told. She followed her older sister to the garage, while Drew went to finish his homework before dinner. When they entered the garage, it was very crowed. It was a two-car garage that now had the family Volkswagen, a freestanding motorcycle and a trailer with a motorcycle and a sidecar. Apparently, it was later agreed that Aunt Dia’s Honda would go in the second space and the bikes and sidecar in the carport starting the next day.
The freestanding bike was white. It had a gold feather on it. It was definitely Drew’s. He had gear to match. Dria had the bike on the trailer = it was white with gold trimmings and had a blue flower on it that looked like hers. She also had gear to match. But what caught Dani’s eye was the sidecar. It was gold and had the design of a Cheetah head on it. It was beautiful. She also had gear to match. Dani did not wonder how it came be. She was just excited that it was.
However, she knew the concept of no free lunch. Nothing comes from nothing. “What have I to do to earn this, Dria?” Dria explained that a lot of Drew and Dria time would be eaten up to pay for the bikes for now, as well as Dria earning her licenses. Dani would have to pick up the slack around the house. “We’ll work out a new chore list. It’ll last about a year.” Dani was okay with that, she did not fear and no stranger to work. “Anything else?” “You’ll have to take a sidecar basics class, but that will only take a few weeks.” That sounded like fun actually. “That’s about all.” Dria finished. Dani grinned. “That’s fine. Maybe when I’m your age, we can all ride bikes together in the war.” Dria half grinned half frowned. “Maybe. Hopefully the war will be over by then, and we will have won.” Dani nodded, knowing her sister was wise. But it was still fun to think about. That’s when Aunt Dia called everyone to dinner.
