What is their personality like?
Nathaniel is a calm man who rarely raises his voice against anyone. Not to say the words on his smooth voice are always kind ones. He seems almost a sociopath at times but that may just be a result of having to drink blood to stay alive. Nathaniel is capable of both highly intellectual conversation and peasant rambling making him a sort of social chameleon. He became this way as a feeding method because being able to fit in anywhere means being able to feed anywhere. As an individual Nathaniel's drives and motivations are hard to pinpoint. His values seem to shift on a day to day basis. Some years he has been benevolent and others he has been cruel. The one constant is that Nathaniel keeps his circle of trust very close and guards many secrets.
Nathaniel's beast is another story. When the beast takes over Nathaniel has a single desire and mindset that can be described in a single word. Feed. Nathaniel looses conscious control of his body and the beast acts without caution or care until it is sated.
What are they capable of?
Nick's great age grants him considerable strength, speed, senses, and the ability to heal wounds as it would with any other vampire. As with the rest who do not practice healing disciplines, Nick must focus to heal his wounds. Aside from what the curse gives him naturally, Nick is a highly skilled detective and liar. Nick's sire passed Obtenebration, Dominate, and Obeah onto him through his blood and Nick has learned to use the power well. He utilizes Obtenebration to assume mastery over the shadows. He can bend and shape shadows around himself to fit almost any shape he desires. He also uses this ability to teleport through shadows. Rumors suggest this ability allows Nathaniel to assume a form of complete shadow but if he can, he rarely ever uses it to this extent. Rivaling his mastery of Obtenebration, Nick frequently utilizes Domintate to end fights and uncover information. He rarely uses it to possess individuals but he has been known to do it in the past in order to survive more dire situations. It is his primary tool for cleaning up panics caused by vampires who break The Blood Edict because it allows him to alter the short term memory of individuals who become trapped in his gaze (and command them.) Nick's final discipline is Obeah and it is his least practiced one. Nathaniel has had little use for healing in his life but he has learned to use Obeah to gain knowledge about subjects and heal them to some minor degrees. He practices this power when he can to try and strengthen it.
What is their backstory?
Nathaniel lived an unimportant human life as a blacksmith for the army of some warlord. He was good at his craft, good enough to draw the attention of a vampire with rather specific desires for his weapons. The vampire had dreams and Nathaniel could forge them so the vampire made him immortal to keep him around. The vampire was too brazen in the months that followed and was killed. Nathaniel- unaware of what he was becoming- turned to the voices in his head and found Dracula and his castle. There were others with Dracula but only one warrants mention here. Saxon Blood, the man who would change Nathaniel forever. It was long ago and before The Great Purge of 1537 so there were different rules. There were no covens, no upward leadership. Dracula was the most powerful of his kind but he didn't know how to control them yet. Nathaniel was one of the ten vampires who helped Dracula form the coven system. Saxon was another. The two of them often worked closely together on assignments and when the time came that Dracula wanted to take control of the supernatural world, Saxon managed to become his right hand. Dracula wanted a system of laws and so Saxon and Nathaniel designed one. Nathaniel argued for a more moderate doctrine that would allow vampires to live freely among the humans and do as they please. Saxon disagreed. He believed that vampires would thrive in secrecy because if they were out in the open the public would fear and reject them. They argued but after a long debate Saxon seemed to give way to Nathaniel's side. They wrote out a document and the next day Dracula proposed The Blood Edict. A document that set many rules to help vampires survive, but also commanded them into secrecy. The Edict helped Dracula form the coven system and the original covens were built based on interests of large groups of vampires. Over the years they have shifted a little. Nathaniel had no time to figure out what had happened before Dracula began his bloody campaign- The Great Purge of 1537- to wipe out the rest of the supernatural creatures. Saxon and Nathaniel became efficient tools.
The first great battle of the purge was fought in 1538 and it was fought between the vampires and the werewolves. It was the Battle of Preveza and while the humans fought for one purpose, the immortals fought for another. The seas ran red with vampire, human, and werewolf blood but at the end of the day vampires stood victorious. Nathaniel has stated that he does not remember the actual battle. He remembers seeing the werewolves across the sea on a ship and then he remembers chaos. Saxon always painted the most vivid pictures of his side of the battle. Nathaniel... he didn't seem to enjoy it as much. He had wanted peace, Saxon wanted war. Saxon got what he wanted. The two fought closely together in the war until it's ultimate end in 1540 when Dracula had finally snuffed out the last source of true power that could threaten him. When the war was ended, Dracula decided he would need to create a force of vampires who were not questioned in order to act out his will in the world and uphold the laws he set. So he founded the Ekons. Among the earliest number were Nathaniel, Saxon, Amelia Cross, and a few others. Saxon, Nathaniel, and Amelia had a very unique and special relationship. They were all in love with each other and they were alright with that. Saxon and Nick had a bit of a history but it didn't really help or hurt them. Dracula handed out assignments and he put Nathaniel with Amelia, not Saxon. This wouldn't have been a problem if Saxon were a less petty man. He began to feel like the two were pushing him out. Things got worse when Nathaniel and Amelia got a little too popular.
The year was 1605 and the dynamic duo that was Nathaniel and Amelia had caught wind of a foul plot. That same year, ten years before his disappearance, Dracula had begun making moves to take over the English government. James VI and I had organized a meeting in the House of Lords and Dracula was going to subjugate the man he had already Dominated many of the other officials he would need and they were to be at the meeting as well. All of the pieces of his puzzle were falling into place but The Dead Vampire Society was at work to stop him. They organized a gunpowder plot using religious fanatics with the intention of killing Dracula and his minions. Amelia caught wind of the plot and Nathaniel helped her find the conspirator beneath the House of Lords guarding the barrels of gunpowder meant to wipe Dracula off the earth. They were intent on killing the man but the police that Nathaniel- who expected a much larger fight- had called were already arriving. Nathaniel dominated the man so that he would not run and then did a little post production work to ensure vampires were never mentioned. Dracula's plan worked and vampires have held heavy sway in England ever since. Dracula was grateful and rewarded the two with land. A small island for Nathaniel and a castle in Scotland for Amelia. Nathaniel never really used his island because it wasn't conductive to vampire life. He lived in London. He lived there for a long time. He had a small, modest apartment and he stayed low to the ground when he wasn't needed. He was too normal and too different. He only went out at night and that began to draw suspicion. One night the police broke into his house and he was forced to run. He went to Saxon who also lived in the city. Saxon told him that he would help and then when Nathaniel was resting the police burst through Saxon's door as well. Saxon did not panic or show and fright. He showed the police to Nathaniel who did not resist because he knew he could not flee again or fight and break the Blood Edict. Nathaniel was arrested and betrayed. Something in him broke. Saxon's treachery did not end there. He went to Dracula and reported that Nathaniel had been arrested. Dracula- while conflicted- was forced by his own laws to send the Ekon after Nathaniel before the humans discovered what he was. Saxon and Amelia went. By the time they arrived Nathaniel had already escaped. They hunted him through the city and found him in the sewers. Nathaniel exposed Saxon's betrayal to Amelia and that broke the love they all had. Saxon attacked in a rage and Nathaniel tried to fight back but Saxon was a second generation vampire and he was far more powerful than Nathaniel. Saxon bit Nathaniel and began to drain him of blood. Amelia allowed it because she thought Saxon was just trying to subdue Nathaniel but when it became clear that Saxon was trying to consume Nathaniel's soul, she killed Saxon. He didn't expect her attack and was not prepared so it had been easy. She helped clear Nathaniel's name and Dracula recalled his command to kill Nick. Over the years after that Nathaniel became distant and eventually the love that he and Amelia once had faded. It was too different now. Nathaniel was a different person. Less trusting. He had seen death approaching again and it had left it's mark.
Many of the great mysteries in the world can be traced back to Nathaniel or his work while serving the Grand Coven. Lots of cover ups and murders. The Lost Colony, the City of Gold, the Fountain of Youth, the Voynich Manuscript, and Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance are just a few mysteries that can be traced back to something Nathaniel was doing at some point. Outside of his solo work Nathaniel has also been noted to have been on the team that stole the Ark of the Covenant from The Order of the Dragon with Amelia Cross. Today he continues his work as an Ekon and private investigator.
