Lural UGH! Her brother could be so... just so... UGH! Claire was avoiding her brother. She knew he'd be waiting for her after school, and she just wanted to go out and have some FUN. Baum was nowhere to be found, so she needed someone else to hang out with. She'd heard of a cute little cake shop that she just HAD to try, but she would have felt foolish going alone, and like heck she'd ask her brother. She was pondering what to do when a... vaguely familiar classmate walked past. She sort of recognized the geist, maybe. "Hey, you wanna go grab some cake with me?" She asked blatantly. Rano Cyril, notebooks clutched to his chest, was trying to make his way back to his room. Today's classes were surprisingly easier than he'd expected, so he might even venture back out once he'd dropped all his things off to try to make something in the kitchen. He'd done fairly well in his baking class, so he was tentatively excited to try again. At the edge of his attention he heard someone asking about going out for cake, but the question went right over his head. Nobody asked him to hang out, much less on dates. There was surely one of her friends around him or something. Content that it wasn't him that she was talking to, he tried to get through the hall to head back to the dorms. Unfortunately there seemed to be some kind of jam going on in that direction. Shifting from foot to foot, Cyril glanced back. Maybe there would be a faster way leaving that way? Words: 161 Lural "Hey~" Wow, did that guy really ignore her? She followed him as he reached a bit of a jam in the halls. Claire leaned over to look at him. "Did you hear me?" She blinked at the geist. "Would you like to go out for cake?" She pushed her iron-straight hair back over her shoulder as she stood upright once more. Rano Cyril flinched, just catching movement out of the corner of his eye. Whipping his head around, he realized she had been addressing him. "W-what?" his patches flashed his surprise. Bewildered, he took a moment to process her question. "But. . I don't. . wh-why would you want to get cake with me? Do-Don't . .You must have friends more. . more suitable to do somet-something like that with?" he finally parsed out. His fingers paled as his grip on his notebooks tightened. She was pretty so there wasn't a chance that she didn't have at least a couple friends she could go with instead. Words: 100 Lural Claire smiled when he looked at her. "Yeah, but I can't find them. Besides, maybe I'd like to make new friends." She folded her hands behind her back and spun on her heels so she was facing him, walking backwards as the crowd moved. "Do you like cake? I always find things like cake and stuff to be better when you eat with friends." Rano "So so so, you pick me?" Cyril asked, incredulous. For the most part he'd stuck to the edges of class. No reason at all for her to pick him out. Unless she had taken the baking class as well? Blinking, Cyril noticed he was hunching over his books and made an attempt to straighten. "Y-yeah. . .I like cake. . .I-I-I guess it's better with friends?" Not that he'd ever really had a change to do something like that. He'd gotten food a couple times with some people he knew but thought that what she was talking about was a little different. Wordcount: 100Lural "Well sure. Why? Should I not pick you? I mean, you were walking alone and looked kinda down. Cake is the best pick me up." She then looked thoughtful for a moment. "Well, cake, and ice cream might be tied for the best... But that's beside the point. The point is! We should go out for cake together." She nodded. "Oh, I'm Claire." She stuck a hand out towards him. Rano Cyril wasn't sure how to answer that. Lights flashing intermittently, he took a deep breath and tried to calm down. This was fine, she was fine. May-maybe it'd be ok to do this one thing. Slowly his flashing ceased and he released his death grip on his notebook. He had wanted to go make something sweet. This would just be . .skipping to the last step. "Cy-cy-cy," he took another breath and tried again. "My name is Cyril." After a moment of looking at her, his third eye peeking open slowly to glance at her hand, he took it and gave a weak sort of hand shake. Wordcount: 106Lural She gripped his hand firmly, though not tight or painfully and shook it happily. "Nice to meet you Cyril. Do you prefer to be called Cy?" She glanced, just for a moment, at his third eye as it opened, and she just smiled before resuming eye-contact with his other two eyes. "So do you have a favorite kind of cake?" She turned, still holding his hand and pushed her way into the slowly thinning throng of students. "When my friends told me about this place, they mentioned seeing a chocolate raspberry brownie cake that just... sounds so good!" Rano The moment her eyes moved from his main pair his third eye snapped shut and he winced. He tried keeping it closed most of the time to keep from having to explain anything or drawing attention, but he couldn't help that occasionally it helped his vision. "I-I like white with with with blueberry frosting," he decided. Her hand lightly holding his was enough to speed his heart up, but not enough to get him panicking too bad just yet. "That that that doesn't sound too bad," he agreed. Keeping a tight grip on his notebooks, he let himself get dragged along behind Claire. Thankfully while he'd been distracted the crowd had started breaking up and they were able to get through without running into any problems. Wordcount: 126

Lural "Blueberry frosting? I haven't had that before. Ooooh, I wonder if they have anything like that!" She was skilled at weaving through the groups of people until they were outside in the courtyard, heading off campus. There were fewer people outside and she slowed so they could walk side by side. "So do you do baking? I've tried baking a couple times, but my brother always comes along and ruins things. He keeps taking over my projects. It's really annoying. He baked his own birthday cake last year because he caught me trying. Can you believe it?" She was grinning at the story. Rano "I don't don't don't know. . . they probably won't. I-I-I don't see it in shops very often," Cyril demurred, surprised by the amount of enthusiasm she had for it. When they managed to get outside, he sucked in a breath. The overwhelming scent of other nightmares wasn't as oppressive out here and the faint aroma of plants was soothing. It wasn't the same as the musty scent of old books or preserved artifacts, but it was pretty nice. "I-I-I took bak-bak-baking last semester." That counted, not like some of his half-hearted attempts more recently that had never turned out well. "Why-why-why," Cyril sucked in a breath and tried the sentence a different way. "Are you bad at baking?" He couldn't think of any other reason her brother would have felt the need to take over. Wordcount: 134Lural "That's the problem. I don't know if I'm bad at it! He keeps barging in and takes over. He says he's taking care of me but goodness gracious it's so annoying! Do you have any siblings?" She changed the subject. She didn't want to complain the whole time. "Oh, and you didn't tell me what you prefer to be called. Cy or Cyril? Or does it matter?" Rano "Why-why-why don't you try taking the baking class at school-school-school then?" Cyril asked. That's what he'd done. At her question he just shook his head. No siblings. Probably. He had been abandoned at the orphanage, well, not even there, just abandoned. For all he knew he could have countless siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles. But nobody had wanted him, so he'd never know. Pensive, he just shook his head again at her second question. Nobody was friends with him who'd ever given him a nickname, and the names he had been called he didn't want to be called. "I-I-It doesn't matter," he replied, shrugging. Wordcount: 103Lural "Hmmm... Maybe I should take baking! I'll look into that! Lucian just wants to take care of me, he says. But it's annoying. Sometimes I wish I didn't have a brother, but I know I'd be sad without him. So I don't wish too hard." She shrugged, leading the way down the street. "Well, I think Cy is a really cool name, so if you don't mind, I'd love to call you that. I don't have any good nicknames. Claire doesn't shorten to anything very well." Rano Cyril shifted his grip on his notebooks, realizing how tightly he'd been holding them when his fingers were mildly in pain afterwards. "The-the-the teacher is pretty nice. . .in baking. . . " he said. There wasn't really anything he could say about her brother issue, and he wasn't sure he'd want one even if he had the choice. "Oh-oh-okay, I-I-I guess." Not that he expected her to want to hang out with him again after this. After all, this was probably just some experiment or or or she was just bored and he happened to be there. "Cl-Cl-Claire is-is-is a nice name though." That was the best he could offer, his third eye slowly peeking open again while she wasn't paying attention. Wordcount: 119Lural "Thanks. I mean, I like my name, but sometimes I wish I had a cute nickname, like Cy, for Cyril." She glanced back at him and smiled as they turned a corner. "We're here!" The front of the shop they stopped at had all sorts of decorative cakes. There were cakes with gold leaf, decorated with pearls and flowers, multi-tiered cakes, mini cakes, cupcakes, and just about every color imaginable frosted the treats. Rano "It-it-it's probably p-p-princess or some-some-something," Cyril muttered under his breath, more than hoping she didn't catch that. As soon as they stopped moving he tried to take his hand from hers, already regretting letting her drag him here. She fit in perfectly with the shops look. All pretty and nicely dressed and smelling good and he so clearly did not. His uniform was a bit crumpled from being in class all day and his hair had grown out long enough that it was starting to do the curl that he hated. "I-I-I sho-shou-should just g-g-g-go," he stammered, his third eye wide open as his gaze flicked from cake to decorated cake. Wordcount: 111Lural "You can't go..." Claire looked at him suddenly. "We were going to have cake... together, right?" She faced him and searched his face. "Don't go." She really wanted to have cake with him. "My treat." Rano "I-I-I-I-I don't fit-fit-fit-fit with the-- It doesn't make sense with the-- you-you-you really should have picked-picked someone bet-bet-better to do-do-do this with," Cyril stammered and stuttered, his spots flaring and flashing. She was looking at him, she was looking at him! His eye, the eye! Close it! Close it! Before she looked, before she saw!! Swallowing, he grabbed ahold of his notebooks again, hunching over them as if that would help him to disappear. "You-you. . . shouldn't. . ." he weakly finished. Bad enough that she was insisting they have cake together here at a shop like this, even worse if she paid for it all. Wordcount: 103Lural Claire sighed and reached up and touched his cheek. "I like not making sense. It keeps life interesting." She smiled, trying to get him to look at her. "It's cake. There is no fitting in. Come on, you're overthinking this! If... you don't want to eat here, we can get the cake to go." Rano Cyril froze when she touched his cheek, absolutely petrified. His gaze quickly went from the ground to the shop to her face and back. "A-a-a-ar-are-are you sure?" he tentatively asked, pulling away from her touch. His hand was ok but he couldn't stand the touch on his face any longer. "It wouldn't-wouldn't-wouldn't be a prob-prob-problem?" He clutched his notebooks tighter, having taken a half step back to be out of reach of her touching his face again. His third eye finally snapped shut as he shook his head. If if if it wasn't, if it wouldn't be awkward for him to eat in there with her, then he could do it. Wordcount: 111Lural "It's no problem. Just come on in and pick the cake you want. Then we can go somewhere and eat. You don't like crowds do you?" She opened the door and and motioned him to join her inside. "I don't bite." She promised. Rano For a few moments, Cyril just stared inside. Contrary to what he thought, the smell wafting out was heavenly and the crowd wasn't actually that bad. He licked his lips. It would be. . nice . . . to sit in there and be able to smell the freshly made cakes. To have a moment to sit and admire the dainty decorations. Cyril hesitantly nodded, darting inside and then sticking to the wall. "N-n-n-no. . .t really," he told her. He didn't want to admit much more than that, so he just kept quiet. "W-w-we can. . si-si-sit in here. . .if-if-if you'd-d like. . ." he gave her a wobbly smile, trying to show her he was fine now. Wordcount: 111Lural "Oh? Alright." She followed him inside and smiled at him. "Do you know what you want? Or... would you like to find us a table, and I'll just bring us some cakes. Then it can be a surprise. Is that alright?" Oh, they seemed to have tea here too. Tea and cakes were perfect! She just smiled at Cyril before flouncing up to the counter to look at the cakes. Rano Unable to decide, Cyril sighed with relief when Claire didn't wait for his answer, which would have been quite some time in coming. A quick glance through of the room and he'd spotted an unoccupied table in a nice secluded corner. Sticking to the edge of the room, he made his way back to it, avoiding conversations with everyone else in the room. Before long, Claire was taking a seat across from him and then there was cake and tea and she chatted to him as if there was nothing odd about him and her sitting in a place like this. By the time the cakes had been demolished and the tea was down to its last dregs, there was a warm feeling sitting inside his chest. Quietly, so quietly he wasn't sure she'd hear, he murmured, "thanks." For taking him out, for being so nice, for, everything really. Wordcount: 149
