This topic might seem a little selfish ('cause it's about me), but I feel that your oppinions count. My question is... Which of these guitars should I buy this summer? The guitars are: -Gibson Les Paul Classic -ESP F-500 / F-500FM -ESP EC-1000VB -Gibson Flying V -Gibson X-Plorer
I play alot of Led Zeppelin and Metallica. I want a guitar that will last almost forever and will never let me down. I want it to have a nice feel when I play it. I want something that looks real nice. I don't have that much money to buy any guitar in the world. By the summer, I'll have about almost $1 500 - $2 000.
Your oppinions are greatly apreciated. ALOST: I guess this thread could be used for anyone who isn't sure on what guitar or equiptment they should buy, and they could come here and ask!

That'd be an easy one for me. I'd go for the LP. They're dynamic, solidly built and if you really like the Zeppelin sound, you can get it out of an LP.

I love that sound... But I play things what sound more live Metallica or metal. I also make up my own songs...and they end up sounding heavy metal-ish. I only make up one song that sounds more to the Zeppelin style... confused But I have been dreaming of owning an LP for a long time...

Probably one of the Gibsons, they're quite versatile and easily modded if you want to go more metal-style.
Plus the Gibsons will give you more of a Led Zep sound, ESPs are mainly more for metal. Although they are very nice guitars.

So, if I buy the Les Paul, abd love the sound. But then I want to go more metal...what exactly would I have to do? Buy a nice distortion pedal and/or effects pedal? Or change the stock pickups to EMG Pickups? Or both? xP Sorry, too many questions. Sorry for being to damn curious and interested... x-x

Well, the Led Zep effects setup would be relatively simple, so you won't have to worry much about that.
Good effects/distortion(s) would be very useful, and from what i've heard, EMGs are very versatile, but you don't have to change both pickups, and if you do you can experiment a bit more than just sticking to one brand.
But in the end of the day, you know what you want more, if you're looking for a very smooth playing metal machine, ESPs are great. But if the Led Zep thing is a necesity, then a Gibson wouldn't go amiss.
Another good tip is to try the guitars, play them, listen to them. It'll help you choose and give you a better idea of which each guitar is about.
And don't worry about askin' us, it's what we're here for.

Ok, So the Les Paul can also give me that Metal-ish sound. Great. But, Isn't it quite expensive..?? Do any of you know about how much they cost? *I live in Canada* confused 'cause my budget isn't that big...

Your not going to get a guitar that has both Led Zep and Metallica sounds down entirely. The closest you get might be a Paul with EMGs. Hetfield used a Paul style with EMGs, and Pagey used a LP, and I'm certain you can get some good classic tones with EMGs as well.
My personal favourite of the listed guitars is the Gibbo Explorer.

I think the LP standard would run you anywhere from 2000+... depending where you got it from. It's hard to say to be honest since I've never really been in the market for one.

LP's are versatile in sound. Can be used in many genres. For example, you say you write alot of heavy songs and play heavy songs. If you're into Metallica, doesn't James Hetfield play an LP? Well, he has an ESP signature model now but that's the Eclipse which more or less looks like an LP and probably plays like one. xd
My friend bought an Epiphone Explorer the other week, it's a really nice looking guitar but not sure I actually like the feel of it.

Yeah, from what I heard, EMG's are one of the most versitile pickups around. What I'll probably end up doing is: get a Les Paul, and change the neck pickup to an EMG. I know the bridge stock pickup will get me a nice Zeppelin style, and the EMG will give me that hard metal-ish sound, and a nice classical sound too. ... First of all, am I even able to have both LP stock and EMG pickups? And EMG pickup needs batteries in able to work, right?..Which will cost more to carve the back of the LP to instal the battery...
Sorry, for dragging this on for so long. sweatdrop I just wanna get my info straight before I spend $2000+ on a guitar.

For one, you would need to rewire the guitar, taking out one tone/volume set and replacing them with the active controls for the EMG, and keeping the other two as the controls for the passive pickup. The battery should fit in the back of the guitar, though you may want to look at a guitar at the local shop (ask if they can open it up for you), and see if you could squeeze a battery in there.

I had originally planned on putting in an active pickup with a passive pickup, but I was told by a good friend of mine (who's an amazing guitar player) that I should choose either passive or active and not to mix them.... The problem you'll run into is balance; you may find that the emg will overpower your gibby pickup, and should you try to play with both PUs on, you might get some weird sounds that are not pleasant.
Don't get me wrong, but I think you should try to define your own playing style and just get which guitar plays the best in your hands. I'm a hypocrite though, since I'm totally attached to all my gear and modding and whatnot. I'm looking for my tone though, not someone else's.
Truth be told, any respectable guitar player will tell you that tone comes out of your fingertips and your picking hand, and the gear you use can either hinder it or bring it out more, so let that help you make your decision.
