Name: Zuobian He
↪ A wandering sorcerer from a land where magic is persecuted. Zuobian is a wanted man, a highly wanted man, so much so that he's been chased all the way to this distant desert nation where, running out of options and patience, he enters into service under this foreign king in return for protection and the means to continue his personal work. Despite his gratitude for this timely opportunity, his attitude towards treating the king can be described as begrudging at best.
Magic: Zuobian, by artificial means of his own devising, has a single mana nature: healing. In magic, purer is always better, stronger. Zuobian's healing mana can't help but overheal, which elicits a pleasant reaction in the body, a feeling that the body understandably wouldn't mind feeling more often. In short, Zuobian heals so well that it's addictive.
Skills: Zuobian is a skilled doctor even without his magic, and in fact, he prefers to treat without running the risk of addicting a patient. Beyond that, he's resourceful enough to have evaded capture for this long and is brilliant enough at magical research and theory to find a way to artificially create a single mana nature by fracturing his own mana and transferring everything but the healing type into another vessel.
Personality: Zuobian is of the distant sort. He doesn't mind getting physically close, it's all a part of the job description for a healer, but sets his emotions apart and aloof from the reach of the masses. Most people simply don't seem to understand him, and those that do, he wants to keep the furthest away. To get close to someone also means to feel the pain of losing them one day. Besides, he's already given every emotion he could muster and more to one person in his distant past. He tried so desperately, only for it to all fail and end, and even if he could forgive and forget the pain, he wouldn't want to give his emotions to any other person but that one.
Homeland: A country of clearly Asian inspiration, among curving roofs and paper lanterns is a culture deeply rooted in duty and respect. Warriors are celebrated, but magic is shunned, seen as the art of demons that terrorize every corner of the country. However, this doesn't stop those in power from taking advantage of magic for their own benefit, usually through someone else who is discreetly under their protection. It's one way to live for magicians of this region, certainly more comfortable than sequestered in some dark hole somewhere, but it's also a way of living that is dependent on the good graces and power of a benefactor.
History: Zuobian has lived for a long time, he's lost count, but at least several generations worth.
When he was young, he was head over heels in love with another man, and when that man fell sick, Zuobian did everything to find a cure. Most notably, he fractured his own mana to artificially create a single mana nature. It gave him healing beyond all imagination, except the one thing he most wanted. If anything, Zuobian's basically killed his lover with his own hands. The repeated use of Zuobian's overbearing healing mana became an addiction that changed Zuobian's beloved into someone almost unrecognizable. After that, Zuobian withdrew into himself, swearing to only use healing magic when there were no other options.
Fast forward to now. Because there were no other options, Zuobian had healed a prince of his homeland with his magic. The injuries were so severe that several sessions were required, and in that time, the prince grew addicted to Zuobian's healing mana. He demanded, on threat of death, that Zuobian serve him. Zuobian refused and chose to run away instead, escaping into the neighboring kingdom, but that didn't stop the pursuers. The king's advisor took advantage of his plight and extended Zuobian an offer... he could have denied but that would have meant being captured by the prince's men. Being of the opinion that serving the king of the country was the lesser of two evils, Zuobian agreed to becoming the king's personal doctor. He could start clean here, have a patient who doesn't know the taste of his mana, and if his mana does become necessary, then so what? The king was simply the ruler of a country he held no love for. Having him ruined by addiction was no tragedy to Zuobian.
RIGHTLEFT I give myself to you . . .
Name: Youbian He
↪ When Zuobian fractured his mana, he stored what was left in another vessel, a white lion. Naming the lion Youbian, Zuobian introduces him as his familiar. However, they are even closer, with Youbian and Zuobian being one and the same.
Magic: Youbian holds all of Zuobian's water and lightning mana. However, he cannot cast magic, requiring Zoubian to formulate and direct the mana. The collaboration is seamless, with only the most experienced able to tell that Zuobian isn't casting from his own mana but from Youbian's mana.
Skills: Just lion things, including massive jaw power.
Personality: Youbian is an offshoot of Zuobian, born with the same mind and bonded so closely that even memories are shared. As such, familiar and sorcerer have nearly identical personalities. Although, with his more offensive mana types, Youbian will be the first to step up in a conflict. The lion is also the less affected by tragedy and more open with his emotions of the two.
History: After fracturing his mana, Zuobian needed a vessel to store his water and lightning mana. Youbian became his vessel, and since then, the two like-minded individuals have remained close. While the two have identical minds, with Youbian's just being a copy of Zuobian's, they are firmly two different individuals, and much of the time, Youbian is comforting his master, providing each other the company that they each crave but are too afraid to reach out for.
