Noemi had been put in for Hunter promotion mission and the small mist was very nervous. It was chosen to be a solo mission for her promotion, which wasn’t all a bad thing (less people to disappoint) but was also nerve wracking because she was going in alone.

The tech at the lighthouse grimaced as he looked at her, and then the base they were sending her too. “Good thing you’re a mist trainee.” He noted, “Here’s the pre-ops. We’ve sent a bunch of hunters in, but some of them aren’t making it back and ones that do, aren’t making sense. We think its a large fear based monster, probably Horsemen related, possibly not. No one that’s come back has made any sense so...Make some sense for us.” He saluted her, turning it on. “Mission is in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, Base is underground.”

Noemi nodded, adjusting her gear for the trip and checking her medical bags. Before the portal lit up, she sent a small text to Milo, just to make sure he knew where she was and if anything happened.

”Chirigami”
Text to Milo: Hey! Going to do my promotion mission. If you don’t hear back from me...in a couple days, Something happened. Don’t be worried though! I will do my best! We can celebrate when I come home okay?

With that done and out of the way, she stepped in and was instantly dropped off in front of an abandoned building. The area was surrounded in beautiful green and white forestry. She wasn’t akin to Idaho, but she was pretty sure it was winter in the area, especially by the snow. She would’ve taken a picture, but the building was calling and she brought out her fear scanner, pointing it towards the abandoned base. Her nerves prickled and the hairs on her body stood at end, as she moved into it. It just seemed so dark and dismal among the beautiful scenery. She noticed there wasn’t many animals around either and that made her gnaw at her lip. That would mostly confirm there was a large enough FEAR entity here to drive animals away.

As she went into the base, she poked around the lockers, the tables and desk, long abandoned with mold and dust piling on everything. There was no one in sight, but there was old gear, and new gear lined up on the walls. The most concerning thing was a burrowed tunnel in the side of the base, made, she knew, by not human hands. She pulled out the runic torch, lighting it and descended into the tunnel.

It was in the tunnel, she heard the first sort of sounds. It was faint, and distant but it sounded much like the rumble of an engine, low and deep. She clutched the torch close to her chest, but summoned Melusine as well, just to keep the weapon close.

The water like voice wrapped around her mind, setting the nerves she felt at ease.

As they walked, deeper and deeper into the tunnel, where the air started to turn musty and reeked of rotten dirt, she started to tell signs of the past hunters that were here. Scraps of jackets torn and embedded in roots, faded blood stains soaked into the hardened earth path. Pieces of broken equipment and used runic torches. She shuddered, drawing the trident closer to her chest again. How she wished that Milo was here, or Evan or Tuck or anyone that she knew. Even Stormy, who she had not seen in a long time, would comfort the young woman. She desperately missed the small family she had on the Island, and her cousin who was strong and amazing.
She tried her best to emulate the confidence the older mist hunter had, using Stormy as a strength of power, and Milo’s cheerfulness to get her through. She thought she was doing okay until she hit the first body, almost tripping into it. It had that slight buzz to it, the skeleton with bits of flesh and a tiny bee that, when disturbed by her, moved inside the head and disappeared.
She shuddered, moving quickly down the path and as she got deeper into it, she realized that more bodies were showing up, even multiples piled on each other. It was until the sixth group of hunters that she realized she happened the most recent of the hunters sent to investigate. The smell of death and rotting flesh was overwhelming, causing her to bring her scarf up to her nose. As she brought the runic torch closer, she saw a hive of flesh, and gore and blood, bee’s working busily among themselves making her eyes roll with fear.
Whatever was here……

As she came to the end, where the tunnel cut off and the pile of freshest hunters lay, she noticed the hunter the lighthouse guard showed her. His body moved, but was not like the others, as if he was still being formed into the hives of the bee monsters. She moved to take the flamethrower, retrieving the weapon before the body moved and then burst, spraying blood and guts onto her and her uniform. A stifled scream from her scarf escaped as the hoard of bees started their attack.

The runic flamethrower was dropped in order for her to clutch her weapon, the runic torch thrown on to the body that slowly flicker to flame. Angry buzzing noises assaulted her from all points and she used her trident to beat most of them away. Every crush of bees against her weapon brought more and more until they were one huge mob of them.

She thought the moment weak and kept swinging and swinging, taking stings left and right to her body. Small puncture wounds started to appear, blood dropping down on the ground to join the hunters from before. At one point, the monster hive got a good swipe at her, tearing her clothes and leaving long cuts against her side.

She wasn’t sure how long it took, but she kept crushing bee’s after bee’s until there was no more. Her breathing came out labored, and under her feet were 1000’s of dead, crushed corpses of the monsters.

Her fear scanner beeped once before fear disappeared and all that was left was the flaming body of the hunter where her runic torch had been dropped. Smoke begin to fill the tunnel, as the flames carried to the monster bee’s and then to the bodies littered with their hives. She struggled at first to get out, the strings making her sluggish. Dragging herself out though, she left the tunnel behind, as it caught flame and took all the bees with it.

As the base caught fire, she hit the small button, setting the sprinklers to life and dampening the small base so that it didn’t catch the forest on fire where it was located. Between the fire and the water, the tunnel collapsed and everything in it disappeared, buried underneath dirt and rocks and roots.
She fell to the ground outside the base, clinging to her weapon.

Melusine began, and Noemi let the small sobs escape, She was alive, she had succeeded in her mission. She was….she wanted to go home.

Noemi called the lighthouse, returning worse for wear but surprising the original man who had given her the mission. She gave him the best oral report she could at the moment and once she was done, headed to the infirmary. Small nods of respect were given to her as she had completed the mission. Once she was cleaned up and tended too, she filled her paperwork out for the mission and stamped it with a base that was no longer needed or able to work. Her reason was: Burned down.
