With that being said, bounties are placed basically automatically upon committing a misdeed, with the exception being if you didn't leave any witnesses alive. Pirates can update their bounties in the [Bounty Update Thread] it is the RPC's responsibility in order to update for their bounty as if they do not, they will not be credited for the act, or eligible to claim further exp rewards.

Just like any Officer of the Law should do, investigations are another type of Mission Marines can do. Investigations usually follow a Raid or Destruction of sorts committed by a Pirate/Mafioso. Upon choosing to respond to an S.O.S the Officer in question is immediately subject to the Investigation system and the restrictions placed here.

Upon choosing to respond to an S.O.S the Officer in question has a limit of [48] hours to get to the scene of the crime. By reading the perpetrators [RAID POST] The marine officer is able to scan the area and look for clues.

What constitutes a clue?

After reading the assailants [raid post] the officer is able to scan through the areas in order to find clues. A clue could be a significant detail in which the CRIMINAL in question left out.

For example, Portgas D. Ace destroys Toroa...

Ace has a fire based ability, and Toroa was explicitly burnt to the ground.

(My Marine RPC would now know that fire was the primary method of attack for the crime.)

Having a conscious, and some sense of morality. Ace doesn't kill everybody in the town.

(Meaning he MUST have left survivors, people which can be NPC interrogated and may provide additional information about the crime)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When is an Investigation considered null?
Firstly, when the perfect crime is committed. If the assailant destroys and area, without the slightest sense of remorse and does so by slaughtering all the innocents in a location. Then there is nobody left to interrogate, and if the assailant doesn't use any sort of distinguishable or unique ability. And Shoots his victims to death. Their crime is considered borderline unsolvable.
The objective is to create a sort of MO "Method of Operation" for criminals, while subsequently gaining information about them as well.
The more ruthless and unsolvable the crime, the more said Pirate/Mafioso's bounty and renown increase.
