Basic Information

The weapon externally resembles the Ak-108, and is based fundamentally on it's firing system, however it's design radically differs from the Ak-108 in many ways. The most obvious difference is the piston is underneath the barrel, instead of on top, which in the rifle format necessitates the use of a hole inside the piston to allow for the magazine well to fit inside the rifle. This feature is not carried over in the RP17 machine gun variant, which uses a much heavier and larger piston instead, which is also cheaper and easier to manufacture, and is loaded from the top with the belt fed mechanism. Fundamentally the design works off of a long stroke gas piston like a typical Ak-47, or Ak-108, however they differ in the exact shape and size of the piston , depending on the variant. Both variants use a forward reciprocating mass that counter acts the recoil of the bullet, and this reduces the recoil by nearly 300-400% and makes the weapon roughly 3-4 times more controllable under automatic fire; combined with a hydraulic recoil buffer and a muzzle break, most of the felt recoil is essentially eliminated, with virtually no muzzle rise and 10% of the felt recoil of a normal weapon. Both weapons come with a quick-detachable barrel that features an optional locking mechanism that increases accuracy, but increases the barrel removal time from 6 seconds to 2 minutes. Typically assault rifle variants have the barrel tightened, and machine guns have their barrels loosened. The machine gun variant also uses a substantially heavier barrel, at around 4.5 pounds compared to 1.1 pounds for a standard Ak-108, and has an additional aluminum heat sink to help absorb and dissipate the heat. Finally, the dust cover of the RP17 machine gun functions as a belt fed mechanism, which the standard AM-17 version lacks. While the weapons share 60% parts commonality and an Ak-108 is capable of being converted to an RP17 or vice versa, their key difference lies in which accessories they use. However, hybrid variants, such as a belt fed AM-17 or a heavy barrel AM-17, or a light barrel RP17, are also possible. The standard rifle variant is 7.1 pounds, while the machine LMG variant is 14.2 pounds.

The 7.62mm x 54mmR round is 11.3 grams and has a velocity of 785 m/s from a 16.5 inch barrel, 820 m/s from a 20 inch barrel, and 850 m/s from a 23.5 inch barrel, which produces 3500, 3800, and 4000 joules. The round itself has a G1 BC of roughly .53, which gives is an unusually long range compared to many standard rounds, but due to the generally shorter barrels and low quality ammunition the accuracy ranges between 1.3 and 2 MOA. The barrel is a 4 groove right hand twist 1 in 9.45 inch (1 in 240mm) molybdenum disulfide coated stainless steel barrel, with a mechanism designed to force the air down the barrel, like the pecheng machine gun. The barrel is enclosed in a steel jacket, which runs up to the muzzle to provide forced air cooling, similar to the distinctive Lewis machine gun designed during the World War I era, which is much larger and effective on the machine gun variant, and smaller on the assault rifle variant. This allows for a realistic sustained rate of fire of approximately 80 RPM for the assault rifle and 250 RPM for the machine gun. The weapon can last approximately 20,000 rounds, for both the barrel and the receiver.

The weapon differs from the ak-47 in a number of ways. Aside from the caseless 7.62mm x 54mmR rounds, the counter acting recoil
