Oliver never had the heart for fighting beyond simple survival, but he had grown quite familiar with his axe over the years. Jökul had helped save his life on many occasions, and hours and hours of practice outside of desperate situations made the weapon feel more like an extension of himself than an object of metal and magic. From just the way he carried the axe it was clear he was no longer the most awkward trainee on the field.

Today that title fell to a familiar face, someone who looked just as awkward as Oliver had felt just getting started. The shy teen hesitated, and finally approached the Life division trainee, Merric.

"U-um, did you, uh, want to practice with someone?" He asked shyly, almost like it would be doing him a favour instead of the other way around.

Merric was not a fighter.

He was not a fighter, and he was embarrassingly uncertain when it came to fighting, even if he'd had relatively decent luck in the past. But luck was not the same thing as physical ability, something that had become abundantly clear to him recently.

He was dressed in his usual ensemble, but Merric had stripped off his coat and was down to his shirtsleeves and waistcoat, the sleeves of his white dress shirt rolled up to the elbows as he paused to take a breath, resting a hand on the handle of his pick.

It was embarrassing that he felt so ridiculous about this. Merric exhaled a breath, then realized that there was someone approaching - the younger trainee he'd met before, possibly even shyer and quieter than himself, which was saying something.

"Oh, Oliver," he said, offering a small smile. "Ah, hello. Oh. Um."

Merric glanced shamefacedly at the training dummy, then back at Oliver. "Yes, that would...be very nice, if it wouldn't inconvenience you."

Oliver smiled, an innocent and warm expression that was often completely out of place amongst the island's company.

"Not at all, um, I had a really hard time getting used to fighting too..." Oliver admitted it with a sheepish smile, as though he were still just a newbie learning as well. In a way he was, but somehow he had also progressed enough to be the teacher under some circumstances. It was impossible to know when that line had even been crossed, it had been so gradual.

He shrugged off his coat and hung it on a nearby training dummy. In jeans and a t-shirt, Oliver looked almost as ill-prepared for physical activity as Merric. The difference was how comfortable he looked, even when the giant skull-shaped axe appeared in his hands.

Oliver was young, but Merric suspected he wasn't as young as some of the others here on the island. He at least had been here a while, if their last conversation was anything to go off of; and he was probably much more experienced in fighting, even if he didn't look it.

Looks, after all, could be deceiving, as Merric had well learned.

Especially because Oliver's axe was enormous. Merric gave it a wide eyed look, lifting his own much smaller pick, clenching it tightly in both hands as he tried to get his feet into proper position. He really wasn't sure about this at all.

"That's - wow. That's the biggest weapon I've seen on the island yet," Merric said, sounding awed. He lunged forward, trying to swing the hammer towards Oliver's side. "Is it hard to handle?"

Merric's weapon might have grazed Oliver's shield, but it was the words that had the larger effect. The young man's cheeks began to turn slightly red. "I-it's, um, not anywhere close to the biggest weapon, b-but uh, Jökul was a leviathan b-before he was a weapon, so I guess-uh... I guess that's why..."

"It's um, sometimes hard to hit targets, because the axe is so large it takes a large swing, and if you see it coming it can be pretty easy to dodge..." He had intended to start out carefully, but after months wrangling monsters off of the island, his reflexes were still primed for battle. His axe flew into the opening Merric had left him, and carried far too much force with it.

"S-sorry!" Oliver squeaked quickly, feeling the strength of the blow radiate up his arm.

He liked Oliver; he seemed a nice enough person, even if he was a bit nervous - and since Merric was a relatively shy and quiet person by nature, it only made sense that he would get along well with someone like him. Not that Lysander or Roswell were quiet and shy - really, it was the opposite - but still.

"Oh, I see - "

The rest of Merric's words were cut off as the axe came swinging down. It slammed into Merric with the force of a train, sending him careening backwards with a gasp, pain ricocheting up and down his entire body, stemming from impact on his shoulder.

"Oh! That was - very impressive - " He gasped out, Merric trying to get his bearings. "Don't apologize, it's - that was amazing."

Oliver choked back another apology, clearly more disturbed by his own attack than the damage Merric did to his shield.

"I-I should have... um, I-I'm..." He paused, and swallowed hard. Merric was okay, that's what shields were for. Shields and wards and everything. He couldn't do any physical harm, at least.

"I-I learned how to dodge from a hunter with a pistol," he admitted, changing the subject as quickly as he could. "It's um, really hard to dodge when all your opponent has to do is point and pull the trigger... B-but you can get pretty good at reading body language, it's impossible for me to swing this axe without also signalling my intended direction..."

He swung again, more careful this time, and debated the wisdom in offering to help the trainee. Maybe he wasn't a very good teacher. How had he even learned to fight in the first place?

Merric was getting a little out of breath already, which was unsurprising, given the difference in their ranks and the sheer size of the ax. His own hammer looked laughably tiny in comparison; he half wanted to wish it away again so it would be less obvious.

He swung the pick towards Oliver, trying not to wince at the next blow.

"A pistol? I haven't met anyone with a gun yet, I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing," Merric admitted, smiling slightly. "I know there are a few who have them, though. I can't decide whether or not that would be more painful than getting hit by say, a large ax."
