User Image Rain Dance hadn't moved too much from the train station after the whistle blew and the train moved on to whatever it's next destination happened to be. Odd colored eyes stared around at the bodies that moved here and there. Backing away and into the shadows, even if her white coat made it difficult to hide effectively. The enormity of the buildings were enough to make the filly want to follow the tracks back to the wild plains.

"I don't like it. Don't like it at all." Rain Dance muttered to herself as she skirted around the larger ponies and tried the best she could to remain in the shadows. "This place it too crowded, Where are the open spaces?"

Exiting the station, still pressed up against the building's wall, Rain Dance looked out upon PonyVille. The buildings and bright colors. It nearly blinded her, being used to the bland browns and minimal greens of the desert home. Where was she going to begin? How should she fit in? Would she?

"I truly am a bison out of it's bush." Rain Dance sighed as she continued to look around, where was she to go?

Fickle Faid was out and about doing what he typically did every day, looking for something fun and exciting to do. Though unfortunately, here in ponyville, truly exciting things did not occur day to day.
He had been occupied playing dice games with himself tossing and picking up the set of red dice over and over to pass some time when the train came in. He perked up a bit. Nopony interesting usually came in with the train but occasionally it brought somepony interesting or exciting.
The black cold stood and watched the ponies exit the structure with expectant, golden eyes. Then he spotted her, a young white filly. She hung out awkwardly next to the wall as if she was hiding from somepony. Her white coat was quite the contrast to his sooty color but it was her eye colors are really what caught his gaze.
He casually trotted his way in her direction. His approach general enough that it wasn't until he was practically in front of her that it might be clear he was coming towards her. He wore a small smile and he stopped before her boldly as he spoke to in a way that matched his posture, bold.
"You're eyes are weird. I like them." He stated bluntly and to the point. "You're not from around here are you?"

Rain Dance jumped and backed away from the strange colt that had approached her. What did he want? Was he looking for a fight? Her ears flicked slightly as he mentioned something about her eyes being off. It wasn't her fault that she had been born with one purple and one gold eye, was it?

"Thanks?" She said sounding as confused as she was, "No, these lands are strange to me. The prairie is my home. I am here on a spirit quest."

Rain Dance backed away from the strange colt a little more. Her gaze looking around to make sure that no one else came closer. She wanted to finish here and leave quickly. All these bodies running around were making her nervous, where with the tribe she would have been more comfortable.

"Are there always so many around here? This place seems suffocating."

Fickle tilted his head ever so slightly with a bit of a confused look as she backed from her as if he was about to attack her. The confusion he had was quick to melt away into a wide smile and a light laugh escaped him that he couldn't hold back. The white filly's reactions were not really what he had expected, it was much more amusing.
He did not further approach her as she backed away further still. He wondered if all ponies from this Prairie were like her. At the question, he looked about an chuckled. "This is suffocating?" He commented in a disbelieving tone. Sure there was a number of ponies that had just come in with the train and it might be crowed by Ponyville standards but it wasn't like sardines in a can. He eyed her. "I wouldn't visit Canterlot then." He said with a vibrant laugh, though he had not been there personally, it was definitely going to be much more packed there.
"I'm Ficke and I don't bite. I promise." He said offering a warm smile and a hoof to her.

"There are worse places then this?" She shook her head looking back towards the tracks. "This was a mistake, Gran Bur was wrong. I do not belong here."

She was more or less talking to herself than anyone else. She had been in the caboose of the train away from everyone else. She had listened to their banter and goings on. She never could make heads or tales of what was being said, really at this point it didn't seem to matter.

"My tribe named me Rain Dance." She had at least heard what he was saying while she was muttering to herself. "It's not a case of getting bitten by anyone. A bison like myself just doesn't belong around ponies like you. Like fish don't belong out of the water. If you understand what I mean." This she didn't know, but it was the truth. Rain Dance really did feel like a fish out of water. "I take it that you live around here then?" She turned back towards Fickle, watching him closely.

Fickle chuckled softly as she got a sort of panicked, flighty look to her as she spoke to herself about mistakes and not belonging. It was clear that wherever she was from was drastically different than here. Though he wasn't quite sure why she felt so scared. Was she told stories about how terrifying everypony was away from her home? The thought made him smile.
He blinked and listened to her, putting his hoof back down as she did not seem to have the intention to take it. Then he got a really confused look on his face before his laughter burst out, much harsher than he had anticipated. After a moment he wiped a laughter tear from his eye. "That's a good one," he said as he quelled the remainders of his outburst. Then his expression changed to a more curious, almost unsure expression as he continued. " You do know you're a pony right?" He questioned his eyes darting over her again. He wouldn't claim to have seen a bison, but he knew by looking at Rain Dance that she was most definitely a pony.

Turning quickly at the outburst of laughter, her tail flicking slightly. What was he laughing at, was it something she had said? It certainly had to be as he mentioned that she too was a pony, but she wasn't. She was a bison.

"I'm a bison, never been a pony." she said sternly squinting at Fickle. "I have bison parents, live with a bison tribe.
We travel too much to consort with you pony folk."
She waved a hoof as if in a dismissive manner. "So I don't know what you mean by being a pony. My Gran Bur had said the same, but his eye sight is going. So he might have been seeing wrong, like you."

It had been true that the old Bison elder's eye sight was going, but he knew everyone by sound and smell. He was the one who took her into his keeping when she grew out of swaddling age. Teaching her their ways and the tribal dances. He was as much her father as any other in the tribe.

"I'm not a pony." She said softly, "I am here on a spirit quest, nothing more. Once I am done with that, I am going back to my tribe." This was a reminder to herself, she had many hurdles to get over, this was just one. Realizing she is more than what she was raised knowing.

Fickle's expression became one of disbelief as he stared at her mouth open slightly. She truly did believe she was not a pony. He blinked rapidly for a moment then shook his head as if to clear it and stop from laughing again. The determined, sure look in his eyes almost daring him to laugh again. "So you're saying my eyesight's bad?" he half-joked, still not believing how she could not see she was a pony. Well at least physically speaking. "I think you need a mirror and a reality check." He stated. "Cause no matter how you where raised, you are most definitely a pony. And no 'spirit quest' will change that." He did not know what a spirit quest was but he was pretty sure it wouldn't change one's species. He didn't mean to sound rude or anything, he just couldn't quite wrap his little colt brain around how she couldn't see what she was. And he lacked a filter with which to approach the matter in a more tactful way.

"It's certainly something, if you can't tell a pony from a bison." Rain Dance muttered, still not wanting to believe that she was something other than a bison. Sure she was a more pale in color to the rest of her tribe and had less... Wool? If that was what one wanted to call it. But she was still a bison other wise.

"My quest is to find my place within the tribe. My Gran Bur says I will find my quest here among strangers. Ponys, as you say." She tried explaining, but she didn't think there was going to be any clear answers here. "But I just don't see how my quest is here. The only thing special I can see from you ponies, are marks... Bison don't need makes to know where we stand with each other."

Rain Dance was indeed lost within these new lands. She didn't see what was so special with cutie marks, though her Gran Bur seemed to think it was time for her to quest... But quest for what? He hadn't been the most clear, never was. Always speaking riddle and leaving out details that would make everything have sense. If she really was one of these 'ponies', did that mean he sent her here for one of those marks?

Fickle couldn't help it as she further defended herself as a bison among ponies that once she finished speaking laughter escaped him again, but it was softer and more short-lived. "I think that Gran Bur you speak of is less blind than you give credit." His laughter totally faded away now. He was a young colt much like her but he could see plain as the nose on her face why her Gran Bur had sent her to find her place here. "I don't know what this spirit quest thing is, but I think you will learn a lot among ponies." He said much calmer now but still grinning ear to ear. "Maybe you can at least see that you and I aren't so different." He said pointing to her and himself as he spoke.

Clearly, she wasn't going to understand what she wasn't open to the blunt way of putting things. He would stop poking her directly about her being a pony, though he was still amused inside by her sheer stubbornness. "Or who knows, maybe you'll be the first 'Bison' to get a cutie mark?" He said casually as he rose back to his hooves again.

An exasperated sigh escaped Rain Dance, this was getting her no where besides gaining a headache. She already had one from the many thoughts of why she was sent here. It seemed to be the whole same song and dance, round and round in circles. Closing her eyes Rain Dance tried clearing her mind of all that was happening.

"Ok, ok! If I am a pony, as you claim. I will humor you with that.
What am I to learn from being around 'other' ponies?"
While there was still a bit of bite to her voice, she was trying hard to think outside of her small box. "What is so special about these cutie marks? They only look like some sort of permanent thing painted on your body. Only paint I ever had were tribal markings for ceremonial dances."

She had observed some of the older ponies having cutie marks, but didn't understand the whole thing behind them. They just looked like marks painted on the leg that never came off. She much preferred the markings that were painted on and could be washed off after the ceremony. Could she really be destined to have one of these marks? If so, what would she get it in?

Many more questions sprung in the places of others, and her head was starting to hurt again. She hated it!

Fickle's eyes widened slightly as she seemed to suddenly accept the idea she might be a pony. Though her exasperation was clear as day. As he listened to her speak his surprise melted into a smile before it morphed into a light chuckle.
He took a step towards her before he sat down and responded to her question to the best of his ability from what he had been taught. "A cutie mark is a special part of you, a sort of symbolic representation of you. Its supposed to appear when you truly understand who you are and your place in the world." He glanced at his blank flank but only smiled. "I think it's an adventure to find out what life has in store for you and discover your abilities along the way." He grinned at her. He did not know if he was explaining it well but it didn't really matter much. He figured she would end up learning for herself the more time she spent with other ponies.

It wasn't really a case of accepting it completely she would more or less play along with the idea. Rain Dance wasn't the trusting kind outside of her tribe. Everyone was a stranger! For the most part, she still couldn't wrap her head around what these marks were really for. They just sounded pointless.

"I put that on every time there is cause for celebration within my tribe. We paint markings on ourselves for the ceremony, then wash it off afterwards. Why do ponies want these things to be forever on their hides?" She had to shake her head at the pointlessness of it. Wasn't it just easier to wear markings at certain times instead of all the time? Were they doing these 'acts' of the markings all the time? This just made her even the more confused. "And you want one of these 'cutie marks'? Why not just paint one on, the wash it back off when you're finished with it?"

Though she knew what life had in store for her. She was going to grow up in her tribe and help with ceremonial stuff. It was after all what she was learning from her Gran Bur. She was hoping that someday in the future to be his replacement when he returned to the grazing grounds of his forefathers. But really, did she need a marking to tell her that is what she was supposed to do?

"Adventure is always nice, braves of the tribe always went out on adventures. Most came back enlightened, others the younger ones did it to cause trouble among the elders." Rain Dance said as if it weren't a big thing, she went on adventures with the older braves all the time. Maybe this could be a solo one?

This was all giving her a headache. Not to mention... She was getting hungry as her stomach rumbled in protest..

Fickle chuckled lightly and beamed at her. She was an interesting one. He wasn't going to claim to be an expert on the subject of cutie marks. He really only knew what his parents and uncle had told him. But to him, it was just something he knew would happen as naturally as getting bigger.

"Silly, a cutie mark is part of you and every pony gets one eventually. It is not something we choose to wear like accessories. " He paused and put a black hoof to his chin trying to think of a way he could explain it. "Its kind of like a right of passage or coming of age thing." He said waving his hoof in a circle. putting his hoof back down he glanced and his blank backside with a smile before looking at her again. Honestly, he wasn't quite sure why he was feeling so compelled to explain this to her in a way that made sense to her. She was all a total stranger. But he really didn't mind it was pretty interesting after all.
