So hello folks! For anyone with familiarity with the show Batman Beyond, that this guild is based on, please feel free to disregard this thread. However, for those that do not, I will ask you to please continue reading. It's important for everyone involved to be aware of the setting for this guild, because while some of us may have grown up on Batman Beyond as a Saturday morning cartoon (myself included, with Cap'n Crunch in the bowl) not everyone did. So, I'm going to try and make this give a concise explanation of the world you are going to be writing in.

This story is set about 50 years in the future, a not so bright and shiny future to be exact. For anyone familiar with the term, it would be best described as cyberpunk. Corporations are large, dominating the landscape, advances in science have lead to commonplace realities that we can only begin to dream of today.

Examples of this type of world for reference, I will list a few from different mediums so people have a wide pool to refer from:

Film

-Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, probably one of the largest influences on the show and this world as a result. If you have not seen the movie (first off, shame) I'm including a link to a trailer for the film.

-Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is another great example, in that it deals with new emergent technology and its potential misuse. Again, here's a trailer to refresh yourself.

-The Matrix trilogy, the idea of uploading your consciousness into a computer network to fight an evil artificial intelligence, pretty sure that covers it.

-Gattaca, the classic science fiction film dealing with genetic engineering and the ideas of a eugenics based society.

Television

-Ghost in the Shell, the anime film and subsequent anime television series, are often considered some of the best cyberpunk alongside films like Blade Runner.

-The recent USA show Mr. Robot even has cyberpunk elements in it, relating to the idea of hacking a major corporation that has become too powerful for its own good, and the subsequent aftermath.

Games

-The Deus Ex series all dealing with major corporations and conspiracies from the perspective of an enhanced human fighting to seek the truth.

-Watch Dogs, hackers fighting a major company from abusing their power using their own systems against them.

So for anyone with questions as to the technology and science you’re going to see and likely interact with, here’s a few examples. This list will grow as people have questions down the road, but I wanted to give people an idea of what may be commonplace.

-Flying cars woo! Yes, flying cars are around. The Batmobile of this timeline is in fact a flying car.

-Hover technology, yes bikes, boards, etc. these are common place things in this world. Chances are some young punk will be riding a hoverboard.

-Cybernetics: It’s not terribly common, but there are people out there with cybernetic limbs, organs, eyes, etc. Depending on one’s income it can range from being blatantly obvious to completely inconspicuous. For those with some criminal or even heroic tendencies, they’re liable to outfit them with some kind of weaponry. Hidden blades, or even guns.

Robotics/AI: Robots are a reality, with fully intelligent artificial intelligence a heavily regulated facet of life. Most instances of true AI are confined within major corporations, acting as digital administrators or security. However, rumors are abound that some AIs exist beyond the confines, hiding away in the code about the world.

-Genetic Technology: Splicing, gene therapy, cloning etc. This is extremely rare and often very illegal. Those that do use it are often referred to as “splicers” as they often incorporate genetic material from animals and other non-human sources. Cloning of organs is commonplace, often for transplants, but full cloning of humans is often a social and ethical taboo.

-Direct machine interface: The idea of uploading your consciousness into a machine interface is considered an urban myth, whispers in the dark corners of the underworld. But make no mistake, it’s very much a terrifying reality. And also, very much illegal.

This is just the short and skinny right now, but for anyone that wants to expand on this list, talk to me! Let’s have some fun here! PM me for any questions you may have about emergent technologies that you want to include and what not.
