Once the bound servants of the Nobles' Court, fetches have once more been freed to live their own lives.
Once human beings, fetches have become so immersed in magic that their fleshly forms gave out. Now that the power that rightfully belongs to them no longer passes through the Spinel Lady, they experience it more truly. Their immortal lives lend them a longer view of the world. While some fetches do still serve the Nobility, it's a choice now rather than a geas.

at a glance.
Fetches are the natural result of a life spent deep in the study of magic. Once they were able to shed their forms to take on those of another person, but since the recreation of the Charter this has changed. Fetches have incredibly varied appearances; some of them favor the human forms which they have lost, while others prefer to editorialize, growing extra limbs or other features in order to better perform their work.

Once, the defining feature of a fetch was their attachment to a specific noble. Now, many of them are once again freed to pursue their passions. Each fetch has a passion, in the service of which they have given up their humanity. While many of them only became fetches due to their failures in the noble trials, some do find that they have purpose and meaning in their new lives as potent magical beings. Their age often grants them the perspective and the knowledge to create massive magical workings at a speed that a more natural Visitor might not.

Fetches do not receive a defined extra power set. Their main gift is their ability to take on any form they please just by imagining it. As their bodies are not maintained by the meat of them, but by the magic around them, they are utterly at the whim of the fetch and limited only by their imagination.

Fetches no longer are necessary for the process of creating a new Noble, except that all tithing contracts must go through Silk for approval and entry into her book of names. As such, fetches no longer have the ability to perfectly mimic another human being unless they have developed it on their own. Many of them do still have a minor ability to read the powers of another person, but without development they cannot then use them.

The appearance of a fetch is highly malleable. While many of them still begin from the point of a corpse, it is possible to regain something very like a human form through concentrated work; re-acquiring the fetch's precise human appearance requires intervention from Melany Dubhslaine, who can smother the effects of the fetch transition long enough for the fetch to lock in their old appearance.

After the transition is complete, fetches find it incredibly difficult to be in the other world. Leaving the intensely magical environment of their Ashdown is painful for them, as their bodies are mostly maintained by the magic in which they are submerged. The only way a fetch can have a normal life in "normal" Ashdown is to give up their magic entirely, a process covered in a later post. Older fetches, particularly those who are part of the Court, will have to establish a new identity in the nonmagical world, and might find re-integration difficult.

Fetches choose four-letter names reflecting their passion upon the recognition of their transition. Some fetches had names chosen for them under the Noble Courts. These names may be referential to their names when they were human visitors: Noah and Noel, Silk's office guards, maintain their human names. Other names reference their original patron: Silk, Felt, and Lace reflect their Lady's preference for fine fabrics.

Visitors who become fetches are not immune to any of the rules or abilities of a fetch.

becoming a fetch.
Fetches were once create through the loss of noble trials. Going forward, such a thing will no longer be possible, as fetches are no longer involved in the creation of the nobility. However, it is still possible to become a fetch. While it is possible to begin the process of becoming a fetch unintentionally, to complete it your character must mean to complete it.

    The requirements are as follows:
  • Your character must be at least Beyond stage.
  • 5 RPs which do not fit any other fetch transition requirements, occur during the transition, and take place in other ashdown.
  • 1 RP or art piece where your character begins to note the changes to their body as they become more naturalized to other ashdown. This might be something as simple as "huh, I can't really breathe in the real world," or something as esoteric as "I am growing weird pads on my fingers that sense magical intent". The art piece must follow all rules for art that counts for growth and clearly show the changing aspect of your character.
  • 1 RP where your character meets with Silk as their acclimation continues.
  • 1 RP where your character attempts to return to the nonmagical Ashdown and realizes they can no longer exist there for very long.

Once these requirements are completed, you should post them into shibrogane's modbook for approval.

unbecoming a fetch.
Unlike abandoning another class, choosing to give up your fetch-ness requires that your character give up all of their magic. This is also the process for a Court fetch to return to their human life. Once your character relinquishes their abilities as a fetch, they become a civilian, with full memories of their time in the Court or as a fetch. However, they can't even participate in ritual magic, as their innate magical core has been consumed by the effort.

Detransitioning requires a sponsoring Visitor. In the case of Court fetches, this sponsoring visitor can be played by the same player; in the case of player fetches, the sponsor must be played by a different player. There are requirements for the sponsoring Visitor as well, and the detransition will not be complete until both players have completed their requirements. The sponsoring Visitor is responsible for assuring the fetch has somewhere to go and an identity in the real world.

The once-Spinel Lady, Melany Dubhslaine, is integral to the process of detransitioning. She is the only one who can draw out a fetch's magical core.

The requirements for the fetch player are as follows:
  • 1 RP where the fetch reaches out to Melany to begin the process of leaving their fetch form and abilities behind
  • 1 RP where the fetch acquires a sponsoring Visitor
  • 1 RP where the fetch prepares for the ritual that will strip them of their magic
  • 1 RP with shibrogane and the sponsoring Visitor where the fetch is returned to a nonmagical form
  • 1 solo where the once-fetch begins the process of adapting to their normal life.

The requirements for the Visitor are as follows:
  • 1 RP where the Visitor meets with their fetch
  • 1 RP where the Visitor acquires housing for the fetch
  • 1 RP where the Visitor prepares an identity for the fetch
  • 1 RP with shibrogane and the fetch where the fetch is returned to a nonmagical form

Once these requirements are completed, both players should post them into shibrogane's modbook for approval.
