Ahhh, night time… Candy Skull loved the night! It was so much quieter, and so much more peaceful… Not many ponies came out at night, and certainly none her own age! The little filly had been blind for about as long as she could remember, only every now and then catching brief memory clips of how things looked, and being blind meant being different. Very different. She hated school with a passion, and no matter how many times Miss Cheerilee assured her she was perfect the way she was, she could feel the other fillies and colts staring at her with… well, she didn't know what exactly the emotion was, but it wasn't pleasant. Half the time, she didn't know if they were staring because she was blind, or because her coat was ugly looking, and most of the time she figured it was both. After all, being blind nearly her whole life meant she had no idea what she looked like… And that was another reason she enjoyed the night: the dark was good at hiding things, including ugly little fillies.

Fashion Evestan had been waiting for this party all week! He'd seen flyers around town advertising it, decorated in bright colors and ponies wearing even brighter costumes! Now, bright wasn't exactly his game, but he could take some inspiration from those costumes and make them more his style. Rave Goth was a thing, right? Besides, there were gonna be glowsticks, and drunk ponies, and drunk ponies dropping their glowsticks as they stumbled out of the club. Glowsticks were about the only thing he liked with bright colors, and even if the tone of the colors were bright, the glow itself was pale and soothing. They reminded him of his eyes, pale against darkness… And did he mention costumes? Eve loved him some costumes. Especially homemade costumes ponies tossed together from thrift-shop places for one-time-only parties. Those were the best. So rough, so beautiful, so… DIY. DIY costumes were best costumes.
And thus, Fashion Evestan found himself sneaking out of his house and down to the club hosting the party. He found himself a little alleyway that was dark, found the perfect place to hide, and hunkered down to peer out at all the ponies coming and going, dressed up like it was a raver's Halloween. This was so exciting! But also nerve-wracking… He could get caught! And he wasn't sure which was scarier, a stranger or his parents catching him...

Now, the night time was also good for parties, and on the weekend nights there were always parties going on. The bars and clubs especially had loud parties, with loud music, and while she was well underage, Candy was good at feeling out hiding spots in alleyways to lurk and listen. Candy wasn't really sure what it was about music, but she really enjoyed it. She enjoyed the beat, the way it made her feel, the way she could feel it moving the others inside… She couldn't explain how, but she was always good at sensing emotions, even if she couldn't quite put her hoof on exactly what some emotions were. She could also sense the presence of others… but in her delight at the music hitting her ears after a long week at school, she was so distracted she didn't notice the presence of somepony already in her favorite hiding spot until she was too close for comfort. When the feeling hit her, she froze, silent, and started to back up slowly, not yet feeling eyes watching her…
Until she backed into a freaking metal can.
The second the can clanked against her hoof, she panicked, and in her panic she whirled around and ran smack into a plastic dumpster, making even more noise and making the little blind unicorn very, very dizzy.

He was starting to really get himself worked up when a almost shadowy figure moved in his peripherals. It took him a second to react, but by the time he moved his head to look over, the shadow had found a metal can, panicked about the metal can, and head-butted a dumpster. For a second, all he could do was stare. It was a filly-looking shadow, about his age, and covered in bright markings… Of course, he was home-schooled, so he had no earthly idea who this filly was, but she looked a little hurt. He meant to run over to her, to check on her, to assure her he wasn't dangerous, but instead all he could do out of shyness was quietly squeak, "You ok?" Good job. A+. Gold star. Eve inwardly sighed at himself.

One might wonder how a blind pony can get dizzy, but Candy can assure you it's a thing that happens. She may not have had the spinning sight, but her head felt all wobbly and her other senses were knocked out of whack for a moment. She wobbled a bit, caught herself, and heard the squeak behind her. Huh? The sound sounded like it came from a small pony… A young pony, like her! But, who in Equestria would be out at this time of night? Well, besides herself. No matter, if this pony was her age, he probably didn't mean her any harm…
Candy frowned for a moment, concentrating on his general direction as her head began to clear, and realized he felt different. She couldn't put her hoof on it, but she knew this pony didn't go to her school. Odd… Perhaps that meant he wouldn't have the same harsh feelings towards her that the others did? Or maybe it was just her in general, and he'd quickly start acting like her classmates… Guess there was only one way to find out…
"Y-yeah… I think…" The filly put a hoof to her head, then her horn, shook her head, and slowly turned around to try to face him, eyes covered with her hair. "I uh… Who are you?"

The colt blinked for a moment, nodded, then laughed quietly. "Did you trip… because your hair is in your face?" His tone was soft, not mean at all, merely amused and clearly shy. Who was this pony? Her markings were brilliant… But she was asking about him. "I… I'm Fashion Evestan… but um… you can call me Eve? If you want?" As he spoke, he visibly shrank closer to the ground, as if he was trying to make himself smaller. New ponies were kind of scary when they tried to interact with him…

"I… uhm…" Well, he was going to find out within the next few minutes anyway… Candy reached up with a hoof and brushed her mane from her eyes. "I uh… I tripped because I kinda… can't… see… no matter whats in face…" She shook her head then, covering her eyes back up, and extended a timid hoof. "Eve, then? It's um… nice to meet you? I'm… Candy… Sk-Skull…" As she introduced herself, she had this nagging feeling that Eve was starting to cower from her. What did she do? She was certain she'd been nice so far, she hadn't said a mean word, or anything to make him afraid of her! The more she felt him shrink, the more she started to feel a tightness in her chest. Why did ponies always do this? Why did no one want anything to do with her? What was so wrong with her, besides her sightless eyes that who in Equestria should really give a flying hoof about because her eyes didn't define who she was? In a sudden fit of pained anger, Candy withdrew her hoof from the greeting, and instead paired it with her other to stomp towards him. "WHY are you shrinking from me? And don't tell me you're not because I can FEEL it! I can ALWAYS. FEEL IT. Every single time anypony comes near me they act this way, so it's about time one of you 'fess up and tell me WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH ME?!?!?!?" By the end of her rant she was practically screaming, though it was doubtful anypony would here her over the loud music on the other side of the wall. Candy wasn't even sorry, she just stood there, panting and angry and trying not to cry.

Eve was just about to reach out to shake her hoof when the filly suddenly exploded. His eyes about bugged out of his head and he flattened himself as best he could to the ground, staring in shock as her words assaulted him. What the hay? What did he…? Oh. . . . OH. Nothing about this filly, not her markings nor her blind eyes, fazed Eve a lick, but suddenly he realized that she was upset because she thought he was treating her the way other ponies did. The way other ponies treated him the first and only year he went to public school. Like she was weird. Different. Unfriendable. Ugly. Scary. Like him. The normally shy colt found himself feeling brave and protective of this upset filly. "My eyes are black," He stated, with no squeakiness or shakiness to his voice. "My eyes are black," He repeated, when Candy notably seemed confused by his words. "Not solidly, my irises are a pale lavender, paler than my coat, but my scleras… They're solid black like my pupils." Eve couldn't remember a time he felt so… confident. He stood up, walked over, and gently brushed a tear that has escaped down her cheek. "And I have black stitching marks over my mouth, and around my ears and legs, like I'm a rag doll. So it wasn't your silvery eyes or your colorful and beautiful skull-and-rib patterning that made me nervous…" He let out a little chuckle, "I was afraid you'd treat me the way you were afraid I'd treat you…"

His eyes… his scleras… were black? That surprised Candy, to say the least. She'd never met a pony with different eyes before… His steady words quickly calmed the anger burning inside of her, and it was replaced with embarrassment… until his last few words, which filled her with something she had never felt before. "I-I… You… Skull-and-rib patterning?" There was a lot of emotion to sort out, so she clung to the most solid thing she could feel - how she really looked to other ponies.

"Yup!" Eve laughed, then began tracing her markings with a hoof. "Right around here… and here… it's quite stunning against your solid black coat and mane~" Eve sat down in front of her, smiling, then another part of her rant caught up to him. "Hey… you said you could feel how others reacted… How? What do you mean?" He didn't mean to pry, but it certainly piqued his interest.

Candy blushed as her markings were traced out, and tried to imagine what they looked like… She quickly gave up, and concentrated on what he must look like instead. Rag doll stitching? Pale lavender? She focused on his hoof, then him, then… She couldn't explain it, but she could suddenly see that lavender color where he was standing. Not like a solid lavender, or a solid shape, but more pale and fuzzy… like an aura, she figured. She'd listened to audio books about auras and unicorn magic and such… Maybe that was her magic? Reading auras? She knew each pony had a different color magic… With a inward gasp, she realized he was a unicorn too, and auras matched magic colors! She was about to squeal with delight out loud, until he complimented her again. Candy could feel her cheeks grow hot, and she ducked her head shyly. "Oh! Uhm… th-thank you…" Lucky for her, he changed topic quickly. "Oh yeah, I can… I don't know how to explain it…" Candy scuffed her hoof against the ground and frowned, thinking. "I guess… I don't know, but I think I just realized that ponies really do have auras? Cuz like, I can sometimes see colors in my mind, like that pale lavender around you and like, pulsing colors from the club? I can kinda feel the ponies energy inside… and I could feel your nervous energy… It's just this thing I do I guess…"

"That… that's freaking awesome." Eve stared at her for the second time that night, this time eyes wide with fascination. "I'm pale lavender, huh? Makes sense, that's my magic color… Magic colors usually match eyes or cutie marks, right? What's yours? I-if you don't mind showing me…?" This was way cooler than waiting for discarded glowsticks alone in the dark.

Show him? Candy frowned for a minute, then nodded, and patted the ground until she found that stupid can. Concentrating, which was a little harder to do since she couldn't look at the blasted thing, she finally made it levitate off the ground a little bit. Much easier for other ponies she was sure, but it still made her smile proudly. "See? What color is it to you? It feels like a kind of… reddish purplish to me?" Identifying colors was still quite difficult for her, because even though she could see them, she didn't really know until now that what she saw matched what others saw.

"Mulberry, kinda…" Eve smiled broadly at her, "Which is a reddish purplish color~" He knew his colors. Boy did he know his colors. "That's so cool… Oh oh! What colors do you feel from inside? I've always heard the music and could guess it was energetic in there, but I never knew it was possible to like… feel, or see the energy!" He was excited now. This was so awesome! Her talent was by far the coolest he'd ever known.

Candy's smiled matched his, and minutes later the two were pressed with their ears against the wall, both with their eyes closed, and Candy describing the feelings and colors she saw from the crowd inside to a very eager-to-learn Eve. It was the happiest she'd ever been, and after a while, when Eve mentioned it might just be the most special talent he'd ever known, she felt something getting brighter and brighter from inside her. It lasted only a few seconds, but when it faded, Eve gasped. Candy had gotten her cutie mark! Mulberry in tone, just like her eyes used to be, it depicted three music notes, one of which was larger and looked kind of like an eye as well, glowing just like the auras Candy saw from everypony else. "It's perfect," She breathed, and she didn't have to see it to know that. Eve's happiness for her was all she needed, and she hoped they'd be friends for all the moons to come~
