Sherry needed to find a way out. Out. That was the important thing here. There had to be a way to the other side - There was ALWAYS a way home.

First time for everything. The thought was intrusive and Sherry was upset that she'd even had it. No, there was definitely a way out of here. She just had to find it.

Somewhere in this fog, somewhere in these rooms, there was a way out. So Sherry wandered, looking, searching, touching every wall and trying every door along her path. Because dammit she wasn't staying here.

Lucky didn't think he would ever get used to dying. It wasn't the kind of problem most people had - and going through it once was really enough for one lifetime.

He was up to nine times in the last year alone.

It was the numbers that were keeping him sane right now, the emotionless hard facts that keeping him from actually processing what had just happened. The details hovered at the edge of his thoughts, a sense of unease and wrongness he refused to address, because addressing it meant understanding it. And he didn't want to understand this nightmare. One moment he had collapsed, moths filling his lungs, old and weak and dying. And then he was alone in a grey nothingness, no light, no color save a single red butterfly that had burrowed into his chest almost as soon as it had appeared. He knew what it meant, but for once, he couldn't even bring himself to care.

He still felt so tired.

At some point he had picked himself up from a sprawled out corpse and into a sitting position, arms wrapped around his legs, willing the aching through his entire body to go away faster.

Keep moving, keep looking. It was really all she could do. The gray that was the fog was everywhere, and she was sure it was doing what it could to bring her down or confuse her. Probably both. No, she couldn't get off track, she just had to keep moving.

Fog was a funny thing. It was thick and obscuring - until it wasn't. If she had been running he might have tripped over the lump of a person sitting in the middle of the floor. (She guessed it was the middle. It was hard to tell here.) Though she hadn't been running, she was still very surprised when she found herself mere steps away from another person. One who, from this angle, looked a bit familiar.

"Lucky?" Her question was cautious, because you can't trust stuff you find in the fog. "Is that you?" Sherry took two steps closer and leaned in. "Are you okay?"

Her had may have been open, just in case she needed to summon Armagnac.

The sitting figure shifted very slightly, just enough that they could directly at her. There was a reason they didn't seem completely familiar - they had the same dark hair and green eyes, but their hair had receded and gone thin (and their beard stubble thick), and there were heavy crow's feet tracking beside both eyes. From there, it was easy to spot the other telltale signs of middle age across every visible part of his face.

"Sherry?" he questioned back. Something was wrong with his voice, he realized faintly. It sounded deeper, and coarser, than he recognized as his own. It was just the moths. Had to be the moths. "Yeah. It's me."

"I'll be fine, I think. Just, uh -"

Recently deceased. Freshly reanimated. Inexplicably alive.

"Shaken up."

There was an uncomfortable pause, and Lucky unraveled himself to achingly get back on his feet. He hadn't waited long enough - everything still hurt. And even so much as touching his teeth with his tongue sent a wave of nausea through him.

"What about you? What are you doing here?" he finally asked, gesturing vaguely to the infinite fog.

Her brow scrunched up when he turned to her. It did look like Lucky, but... different. She noted the lines on his face, the way his hair had thinned out - He looked older than the Lucky she knew. A relative?

No. He recognized her, knew her by name. She nodded when he confirmed his identity, the look on her face growing more worried by the moment. He looked like Lucky, he said he was Lucky, but...

She watched him numbly as he stood. There were a million things that could be going on here. She had to - He asked her the questions first.

"I'm trying to find a way out." She shook her head like that didn't matter. "Lucky are you sure you're you? I mean... How long have you been here?"

He looked like he'd been here years.

"There's no way out of this place, is there," he sighed. But his expression darkened slightly. It was impossible to miss the way she was looking at him. Like there was something wrong with him. He didn't like it at all.

"Um. An hour, maybe two." He was now consciously aware of how different his voice sounded. Not strained, or lost, just different. The feeling of alienation began to compound quickly from there. Something was wrong, and Sherry wasn't telling him. "I don't know how I got here, though. I was in that tower before this. But -"

He met her gaze again and made a frustrated sound.

"What," he finally demanded, and the first twinge of a red hot anger that didn't quite belong to him rushed through his blood. He made no effort to quell it. "What are you staring at?"

He both did and didn't want to know.

"I-" she started to say she didn't know if there was a way out. It wasn't a helpful answer, and she was far more concerned about Lucky standing there right in front of her. Just an hour or two? She couldn't help it if her growing worries showed on her face. Just an hour or two would not account for what she saw. Either this wasn't Lucky or something had happened to him. He mentioned a tower...

She took a startled step back at his abrupt tone. It wasn't very Lucky-like. Not as far as she knew.

"You," she stopped, not quite sure of how to say it. There was only one way, wasn't there. "You look different. Like you've aged some."

Definitely like he'd aged. Not like life had been sucked out of him, but just older.

Sherry reached into her pocket and pulled something out. She held it up, offering it to Lucky. One small gold compact, which, if opened would reveal two mirrors. It was still new, having recently been replaced after a run-in with a very mean Jason.

"Did you, um, touch anything odd? Or maybe fall through a time portal?" Those were real, right?

There were people up ahead; he could hear them, voices low and muted; not quite friendly, but not angry either. Conversational voices meant to be casual. Gale could just make out the easy cadence, though he couldn't decipher the words.

Either way, they were not Horsemen. He could see that, as he drew nearer to them, rounding the corner and finding them both there together. One smaller and fairer, the other quite a bit older, hunched over, looking displeased and a little disgruntled.

Humans. Not Horsemen. Gale stopped abruptly, his eyes widening, and then they narrowed, his fingers curling tightly around the rifle in his hand.

He didn't say anything. Instead, he just stared, the fury building.

He regretting snapping at Sherry almost as soon as he did. She was just scared. He understood that, maybe better than anyone. It was just too much to take in, all at once, and it made his head hurt. He hesitated to take what she offered him.

"No," Lucky mumbled as he opened the compact and took a good long look at himself. "No, no, no..."

With shaking fingers he traced the lines that age had worn into him in an instant. This mirror didn't lie. Something deeper, sharper, uglier than panic was worming its way through him now. He'd never been vain, but... he'd never thought he would live to see himself like this. No one who could envision a long life ahead of them would ever accept the contract to become a hunter. He wasn't just older - the years had been stolen from him. Leaving him - what?

"No, I'm - I'm twenty-eight," he stammered, to both Sherry and his fearful reflection. He couldn't take his eyes off of it. "That horseman - they did this to me - they -"

The words caught in his throat, and he choked on them like the moths.

"They killed me."

More specifically, he'd died of old age. And he couldn't even explain how he was alive again. He'd tried not to think about it too much, in case the illusion would shatter the moment he recognized it for what it was. He had somehow re-formed, in this fog, like a fear creature, but the damage must have already been done. He thought whatever had entered his mouth and weakened him had been poisoned, or diseased, but this was somehow so much worse.

And then whatever spiral or fearful thoughts he'd been caught in snapped, and he suddenly pushed the mirror into Sherry's hands again. He quickly grabbed her by both shoulders as if pleading with her. "Sherry, I have to fix this, I can't go back like this -"

He noticed the presence of another subconsciously, and his head turned before the rest of him had even processed there was anyone there. He let go of Sherry's coat and took a step back, then another, covering the lower half of his face with his hands. He couldn't let Gale see him like this. He couldn't let anyone else see him like this. Whatever could get Gale to look that angry, was probably bad. "Gale? What's going on?"

Watching Lucky see himself, watching him take it in, watching as his fingers shook - it broke her heart a little bit. 28. He didn't look 28, not any more.

Sherry blinked. "You died? But you're here." Way to state the obvious. "It's-" Lucky's pleading outburst stopped her own words. "Don't worry," she began. It'll be okay. Except maybe it wouldn't be and she didn't want to lie.

She was saved from having to, though, as her gaze followed Lucky's. Gale? He looked upset. Still, it was a competent face she recognized. "Gale thank goodness. We have a problem." She glanced at Lucky, the poor boy.

They were talking to him.

They were talking to him, and they were calling him Gale, and that was a pathetic excuse of a human name. The sheer gall of it - and the sheer gall they had to look as though they expected to be friends made the anger pulse in his stomach, low and furious.

The hatred was all consuming.

They had taken it all from him and now he would do the same.

The first shot was aimed towards the older one, deliberately; neither was a face that Xiao Lang recognized, but both were unarguably human, and he had no particular care for which one he was going after first. It just happened to be the elderly one.

And then he would take out the paler one.

Sherry's reassurance helped to calm him down, but not much. He was worried, about a lot of things -

Especially that Gale was now pointing his rifle right at him --

It was good to know that his fear shield could still withstand anything any more after the moths had drained him dry so effortlessly. He could see it shimmer and crackle slightly at the impact - but taking a round of magic energy right to the chest still hurt like hell, and he stumbled back to catch himself. And he nearly fell - every part of him felt slower, and weaker, and fragile, in a way it had never been before. The frailty was not something that had crept up on him day by day. There was no adjustment. It was new, and terrible, and it was infuriating.

And a moment later, Lucky drew his weapon, deflecting the next blast back at Gale with the flat of the blade. Every rune lit up, one by one, a blue beacon in the fog.

"He shot me," Lucky shouted at Sherry incredulously. As if maybe she had a deeper insight into Gale's sudden-onset insanity than he did.

It happened quicky, or it seemed it did. Sherry never would have expected Gale to just point his weapon at a fellow hunter and shoot - but that's what he did. He lifted the rifle and shot at Lucky.

"What?! Gale, what are you doing?" Sherry looked from him to Lucky and then back. "It's Lucky! Don't shoot at Lucky!"

And then she was there, next to Lucky, ready to defend him. "It's him, I swear!"

He'd barely done any damage at all, which was infuriating. Xiao heard the ricochet of the bullet, saw the jerk of the hunter's body as he stumbled back, eyes wide with surprise, and felt a sense of vicious satisfaction, even as the saw caught at his arm.

No.

"You have a funny sense of what is and isn't fortunate," he said with a snarl. The rifle was flipped over, a move so familiar and so reminiscent of someone else that it was almost uncanny, Xiao's hands curling around the barrel of the rifle. "Fine, if you want to protect him, then you can go first."

He swung the rifle as hard as he could, the end of it aimed for the girl's midsection.
