New York had always been a pretty state.

There were literally all sorts of environments here. The snowy mountaintops were her favourite, and during the colder months, that was where she preferred to spend her time. Up in the mountains, in the ski country, watching others as they tackled mountains to their hearts' content.

It was warmer now, though, she thought. It was hard to tell anymore, anyway, though she noticed the sun was staying in the sky for longer times, so she presumed that it was getting close to summer. The sky was hard to read, though. It looked foggy, at best. Dim at worst, like someone had taken a slide and slowly lowered the amount of light filtering through the clouds. She had grown used to it. It was alright.

New York had always been a pretty state, even when it was cast in darkness.

The eponymous city, too, had always also been pretty, and part of her loved the place. The heat effect wasn't too prominent now, and so she didn't mind just sitting in the center of it all, in potholed pavement, staring up at where billboards hung half off their supports. At one point, those billboards probably meant something. On a few, she could still make out brand names, screaming about whatever product they wanted to shove on the consumer today.

It meant nothing to her, really.

In front of her was a large tower, with long, inactive televisions plastered onto the side of it. At one time, those too would have been flashing advertisements at her.

She had to wonder if there were any ads appealing for the consumerism of the dead.

It had been a long day, that would have been pretty dreary if not for the her new pug-mug, the way all her numbers had aligned perfectly every time like magic, and finding out the new guy's ears turned red when he got embarrassed. It would have been dreary, in other words, if she wasn't America Jones, who just didn't do dreary. She lived in every moment and made it her own.

Also there were the zombies.

The loud screams and panicked voices had faded back after the initial wave, now replaced by the occasional burst of violence, as people met and end or took a stand or helped one another. America's breath still smelled like Cinnabon as she held it, waiting for the strange, hulking figure to pass. It had once been human. She'd watched on change before her eyes and these were definitely zombies, but not like from any movie she'd seen. Their green glowing eyes lit up the edges of parkas and sweaters that she hoped were still, she hoped there was not tell-tale motion, some impossible shudder caused by her thudding heart.

And then it was moving past and she began counting until it moved past. 10-9-8-7 Not too long though. Just enough to give her range as she slid out from the center of the clothing rack, rifle coming up in a calm, practiced motion. It would be getting loud here, very soon, and more would come. There was an elevator across the way. 20 steps. She had 10 bullets.

When the door slammed open, Zachariah rolled his eyes.

"The least ya could do is knock, sir. This is a business."

"Zachariah," snapped the monster, shoving a bed at him with another monster lying in it. The monster looked badly hurt, though from what Zachariah figured, it was nothing that a good dissipation wouldn't get fixed. Rolling his eyes, he came to his feet, putting out the cigar he was piping at by pushing it into a table nearby.

"I'll take care of that real fast for ya." He casually took out his Reaper weapon, a long, blue trident, and pointed it at the man in front of him. The other monster screeched.

"No, no! Please heal him!"

Zachariah returned a thin, confident smile. "What do ya have for me, then?"

The monster scrambled, digging through his pockets while his friend continued to bleed out on the makeshift operating table. Zachariah made no move to help him. It took about a half-minute from Zachariah's estimation, but he was eventually presented with a decent stack of silver seeds. "Please. This is all I got, doc. Just heal him."

While the doctor took the silver seeds, he also simply placed them to the side and offered another one of his thin, overconfident glances. "I don't think this is all ya got, boy. See, there are other things that are real valuable in this city."

"I... I can't tell you anything, sir--"

Zachariah raised his trident back up, aiming it squarely at the monster's friend's neck. All colour drained from the monster's face, nearly matching his quickly greying friend on the table. "O-okay. Okay!"

He tilted his head. "Well? I'm all ears."

Grumpburls was supposedly the best academy for legacy initiates this side of the Forbidden Forest, but that didn't stop it from being a hot bed of Jack damn teenage hormones. Some days you couldn't walk through the halls without hearing about how this demon had the best eyePhone available three months in advance, or how the infighting between werewolves and loup garous was starting up again. Dawson mostly tried to keep his head down, especially during the latter. He was only a hellhound-slash-Protection initiate trying to get good grades and stay alive.

He had no idea who found out about his blue shard. All he knew was that one afternoon, he was slammed against the lockers by a burly group of bullies and had it taken from him before he could so much as yelp.

"This thing really from Protection?" sneered one reaper swathed in purple robes. "I can't believe it. It's just a rock!"

An imp in blue snickered. "Buddy, you're a terrible liar. You could've at least put more effort into this one." She inspected the glowing gem with an appraising eye and looked unimpressed. "Not even worth 5 seeds, but whatever."

"You can't!" Dawson told them, ears flattened. "He really did give that to me! I was a pup, and I was dreaming once, and he gave it to me and said I was--"

Among the jeers, he was smacked against he lockers once again. He probably should have kept his mouth shut.

Lucky didn't usually pay attention to the weather. Sometimes it was hot and muggy, sometimes there was nothing but tropical rain. But sunrise today was surprisingly nice and clear. The light was only just starting to creep over the horizon, turning everything it touched gold.

Not even the early hours of the morning were quiet and empty here, though. He could see the more enthusiastic sun hunters were already in the middle of training, the sound of metal clashing against metal echoing through the courtyard. Occasionally he saw a bright blast of light out of the corner of his eye, as someone unleashed an attack. They didn't acknowledge him, and he didn't acknowledge them, and that was fine by him.

He passed by the cafeteria to pick up a coffee. He'd almost gotten used to the watered down, burnt taste of it after all these years. But he had learned a way to fix that. From his pocket he surreptitiously pulled a tiny bottle and upended the entire thing into the coffee. He didn't deal in contraband much, but vodka helped everything.

It took a bit of juggling to get into the library, nearly dropping the coffee and the folders he'd nestled under his arm. But he managed, somehow, and claimed his usual work spot. Just a table and chair, in the deepest corner of the room, in some section of books almost no one went looking through. Everything was as he left it the night before. There was still a stack of books almost as tall as he was, waiting to be researched.

Something was on fire, the flames leaped into the air as a crackling sound was almost deafening to the ghost’s ears. This wasn’t the first time he had heard it, as it grew closer and closer around him yet for whatever reason he couldn’t remember why it had seemed so familiar to him. It didn’t matter though as another student ran past running with terror stricken on her face. The ground shuddered as something threaten to give away while beams made an angry groan in protest, Matt scrambled to his feet knowing he had only a few more seconds to get out of the library before the whole thing dared to collapse on top of him.

The former pilot of a ghost ran, the flames licking dangerously close as he held his breath or maybe just didn’t bother to breath as he leapt out of the door just in time to hear the roof cave in meeting the ground with a loud crash. It had been close, too close for Matt’s linking as he looked to the darken sky, Halloweentown had not been prepared for this sort of disaster. There was no way they had counted on the sky ripping open as wind whipped around along the ground pulling what it could to the blacken hole while long funnels of tornadoes danced along the ground. It was the storm of the century and as the pilot watched he felt helpless before spotting something familiar.

A helicopter, maybe, just maybe they could figure out something to stop this, maybe flying into the hole would stop whatever the hell it was causing this trouble.
