'Fairy' is a blanket term for anything from banshees to goblins to wraiths. However, the focus here is on the winged folk that are generally called "fairies."
Fairies are generally private folks and are well, polarizing, to say the least.
While they do have their fans, they also have their enemies. And some would say with good reason; as the fae folk have a reputation for stealing anything that they want. Whether it has value or not, they will take it.
A rather sinister thing they like to steal is human babies, whether to keep as slaves or raise as their own is up to debate. They replace the babies they steal with sick fairy. These children are known as "changelings," and the term also applies to the children that are stolen.
Despite their rather bad reputation, fairies are skilled in "wild magic" and have been known to teach outsiders who have gained their trust their magic secrets.
Their hidden realm is protected by their queen, Titania: a stern but fair queen who will punish anyone who dares to try and harm her people.
