Dying is traditional after all.
The word echoed in Sammy's head even as she slept, was it a dream was it reality? Life was so strange that a dream hardly felt exotic given what they saw on a day to day basis. Still it was a dull dream by those standards, color was vague mostly shadows and darkness lingering all around her. As if hearing her own thoughts the ground started to light up, like squares on a chess board. This caused her to hmm curiously.
She started to follow them, hopping from square to square to pass time in the empty darkness. When she looked up she noticed a door. It was just another piece of a seemingly pointless dream, so she marched towards it, hopping square of light to square of light.
It was two more steps and the pressure began to squeeze down on her, the third was the sweat. The light squares faded and the darkness pinned down to a single point. She wasn't even aware she was opening the door till she was in a white room.
Whoever was on the other side they looked terrible, ratty tattered shadows yet something disturbed her about the figure her heart thundering suddenly in her ear. This was the part where she woke up right? The figure moved closer, a hand of bone? Or a hand so thin it looked like bones?
She wanted to tell it stop, yet it didn't and in one motion everything suddenly did stop.
------
They grey in her hair had spread, it was no longer just a single patch, it ran in streaks through her now, bags hanging under her eyes. Ten years ago they survived the storm on the Island. It was funny she was thinking about that day, maybe it was because the weather was wet and refreshing compared to the burning heat of the Sahara outpost. To think she missed rain so badly she was thinking of the rains that damn near ruined the Island.
The lingering thoughts didn't last long. The tremor hit suddenly. Her small bunker of sandbags rattling around her, the worst part? The bulk of it came from behind her. "H-how the barrier was still up. They couldn't," even as the words left her lips the giant twisting centipede of a Famine's sweetest dreams erupted in the middle of the base. Portals near by crackled and flickered, they're blue glow vanished and nothing but the gold of the desert was all that was left.
"GET THOSE PORTAL'S UP," she screamed as she summoned her weapon charging towards the giant beast as Horsemen spilled out from the sand, Famine creatures lashing out in rage, Hunters fighting all around. She ignored it and sprinted to the techs still trying to assemble the gate back home.
"DON'T LET THEM REACH THE PORTAL CREW," she shouted as she clashed with the first horsemen. Tired and true tactics still worked, shew was able to drive the first one back. Two more approached, it was harder this time, the portal crew was still working. People where screaming, others where dying or wounded. She couldn't tell which one it was Horsemen or Hunter.
Bastille whirled above her head in a fury, batting horsemen aside two where distracted, a third slipped in piercing her already weakened shield from mistakes and letting the first two get in too close. A flash of red pain in her side.
"DON'T LET THEM-" Her cry was cut off as the pain hit her again, a thin long blade slipping under Bastille and into her side causing her to cough up blood. She stumbled forward shoving the horsemen back, though it barely stopped them from lashing out, the thing bone blade bouncing off Bastille sending Sammy stumbling backwards. She hit the ground looking upside down as the portals flickered.
The horsemen moved to lunge at the techs to stop it from opening, she did her best trying to toss Bastille at them knocking them aside as another Horsemen's weapon found its mark slipping between her ribs. The pain this time? She couldn't describe it, it was like her whole body went numb from the waist down. Bastille vanished and she knew it was bad, her spine. Something. She was dizzy. The portal. It was opening. hunters running towards it.
She spun slightly as she fell drawing a runic dagger lunging it towards the horsemen but it failed and her legs finally gave way dropping her to the dirt. It was enough though, the delay was long enough. Flipping the dagger in her hand she looked back, looked at the portals and flung the blade right into the middle. The portal shut down again leaving Sammy to bleed out in the sands as the horsemen howled in rage ripping apart the remains of the base.
It grew cold, colder and darker. At least it wasn't hot anymore.
