Liam's expression was somewhat grim as he focused on the Elf standing across from him. He'd signed up for battle magic classes, thinking it would be useful to know. Ironically he'd been paired with someone who also showed marks from the horror last October, though unlike Liam the Elf's "mark" wasn't something she could hide with clothing. He had to suppress a shudder, looking into those black and red eyes. Her closed-off expression didn't help either; it was impossible to tell what she was thinking.
They were given the mark to start. Off the bat Liam tried to use Telekinesis, in the hopes of shoving the Elf back. Instead Liam found himself flying back, hitting the ground hard enough to drive the breath from him. He struggled to get back into an upright position, wondering what he had done wrong.

Arabelle eyed her opponent back. She didn't miss the discomfort the Naga displayed when he saw her eyes, but she was used to it by this point. She was sometimes mistaken for a Litch, but to those who had been there for the horror there would probably always be that discomfort. She didn't hold it against the people who were made uncomfortable by her.
The signal to begin the battle was given. The Naga was quick on the draw, unleashing a spell that looked to have some umph to it. Unfortunately something went wrong, since the spell not only didn't hit Arabelle, but rebound on its caster. Arabelle felt a bit bad, fighting a downed opponent, but knew in a real battle she could allow for a moment of hesitation.
Moving quickly, but carefully, Arabelle brought her hands up while casting Gaekinesis. The earth underneath the Naga jumped with the movement of her hands, sending him up and toppling over again. Sweat broke out on Arabelle's face as she fought with control, so as not to seriously hurt the Naga. Or the floor...

Liam had just gotten upright when the earth felt like it jumped underneath him. He went sprawling back to the ground and tried to scramble away from the spot in case the spell had a particular radius. He pulled himself upright and tried again the cast Telekinesis, this time paying a bit more attention to what he was doing.
This time the spell worked. Liam felt a blast of energy shoot from him to hit the Elf. It was only his second spell cast, but already Liam was beginning to feel drained. No wonder magic wasn't used all the time for battle!

Arabelle was feeling a twinge of regret just long enough for the Naga to get back into an upright position. It was hard to remember how fast they were sometimes, what with no feet to have to force into order. His second spell hit Arabelle dead-on and she felt herself falling back. Reacting instinctive, Arabelle cast Bolster. It absorbed some of the shock from her fall, but either due to a lack of proper preparation or casting the spell incorrectly, it was't enough to absorb all the damage from the Naga's blow.

Liam felt a small surge of victory as his spell hit. If he could keep the Elf down, he could keep her from casting retaliation spells. He hoped. As he cast Telekiesis again, he actually staggered a little, and started to rethink his strategy. Maybe he'd keep the Elf pinned, but he'd also cause himself to faint if he kept this up!

Arabelle felt a bit winded by the second hit. She rolled over and cast the Circle of Respite. It wasn't very big, but it didn't have to be. It was close, at least. She got to her hands and knees and crawled into the circling, sighing in relief as she felt some of the aches vanish. That Naga could hit hard! Hopefully she'd get to do a little hitting back of her own.

Hoping to put a quick end to the battle (the Elf didn't look like she should have that much stamina), Liam cast Telekinesis again. Unfortunately it missed completely. Liam blamed it on the heavy fatigue that was causing his limbs to tremble slightly. At least the spell hadn't backfired like the first time.

Arabelle felt encouraged by the Naga's miss. It looked like she almost wouldn't have to do anything at all. He was probably pushing himself more than necessary, thinking she was a pushover. Though Arabelle's body type gave the opposite impression, she was actually very hardy and in decent shape, with rather decent stamina if she did say so herself.
Hoping to finish things, she tried invoking Stormbringer. In hindsight maybe it wasn't such a smart move, considering she hadn't practiced as much. There was a generalized feeling of pressure in the air, then suddenly Arabelle was knocked back by what felt like a wind blast. She groaned a little.

Liam noticed the Elf's spell backfiring. Hoping it was truly a sign she was on her last legs, he gathered up the last of his magical energy and cast Telekinesis one last time. The blast surged forward, straight and true, while Liam slumped to the ground. He was absolutely spent.

Arabelle got to her feet just in time to see the Naga cast a spell. She automatically cast Bolster (she really needed to work more on her Warding spell!), but it did about as much good as the first time. She was able to stay on her feet, but staggered back several steps and almost lost her balance. As soon as she was steady again she looked around. The Naga was slumped to the ground, looking utterly spent.
With a care for her aches and wobbly legs, Arabelle walked over. She'd have cast a Healing spell if needed, but since this was a practice run there were medics on site who could tend the Naga if he really needed it. She smiled wryly as she offered a hand to help him up. "Good match."
