"All right," said Lorenzo, easing himself up from where he was working on the wooden floor of his office and brushing chalk dust off his palms. "That should do it."

"What is it?" Vesna asked, floating around it suspiciously.

"Insurance," Lorenzo replied. "We don't know how necromantic Yuri's powers may be, so this is just a simple protection circle to prevent any souls from being displaced or death gods from preying on any of us if something goes wrong. It's very basic magic- my mother drew circles like this for me to practice in when I was learning, too." He chuckled, "Better still, since neither of you have feet to scuff it, I was able to draw it pretty big."

"Me too?" Vesna demanded. "I'm going to get to see some necromancy??"

"If Yuri's powers are dangerous, I'll separate you," Lorenzo warned, "But based on what we've seen so far, I think it should be safe enough to let you test out your powers in the same room as him."

"Fair," Vesna conceded reluctantly.

"And if you stay, you'll have to listen to me explain the fundamentals of necromancy," Lorenzo warned.

Vesna bit her lip and considered this, but the prospect of playing with a friend overcame the prospect of her fourteenth Lorenzo lecture on magical theory. One doubt remained in her mind, however, and she asked, "You're not going to use the puppets again, right?" suspiciously.

Lorenzo kicked a box behind his desk. "I didn't even bring them out," he lied.
