Liberty Station is located in a binary star system occupied by four planets, all considered uninhabitable or so nearly that no group, including the Solarian Empire themselves, has been willing to invest the massive amount of resources to making even the one planet that has a chance at being terraformable, habitable.

Thanks to this however, Liberty maintains its independence as a freehold, contracts with mercenaries and traders keeping it supplied with everything the station needs that cannot be provided by itself. The station is armed with the standard compliment of laser batteries of virtually every freehold, although rumors drift around sometimes of there being a few heavy laser arrays secreted under the hull as nasty surprises for anyone harrassing the station or it's visitors. Of course, other rumors say they have the latest in military grade railguns or vibrational cannons too, so its always unreliable to take them at face value.

Liberty was established under the auspices of a wealthy benefactor, set up to be, and remaining, one of the freindliest freeports in the Shell. Or one of the most intelligent, depending on who you ask. Among other small humanitarian services, if someone becomes legitimatly bankrupt or broke on the station, instead of either indenturing or being pushed into a slum, they are given a ticket off the station to a nearby Solarian station or planet if they cant get work aboard Liberty. Of course this means that unlike a lot of freeholds, there is no slum section or backwater area.
