[Semi-Final] Vatra vs Mate'moto

Round 3 information:

- The winner of this duel will be progressed to the final for a chance to win the rank of Brigadier or General.
- The lion/ness who is defeated will have the opportunity to duel in a Third Place Playoff for a chance to claim the title, Legate.
- The winner is the lion/ness who rolls the highest number across 5 turns. An extra turn must be rolled by each player to break a tie. [Reminder of rolls: 1 - miss, 2 - bide/glancing attack, 3 - hit]
- Even if you rolled higher than your opponent, if you fail to edit your rolls with an RP response, your character is disqualified.

The deadline for this RP is: Friday 7th April. If all RPs are finished sooner than this, than the tournament will be progressed quicker.

Move 1: Glancing blow

Mat rolled her shoulders and shook out her paws before stepping onto the sands yet again. She nodded with a grin at Vatra, another female soldier. She was pleased to see how many of her fellow lady warriors were stepping up to the challenge. So far everyone she had battled against had been soldiers, too, which she was quite happy with. It was important to be a good fighter when rising in the ranks. It wouldn't do to have some flighty guard taking such an illustrious position as the ones being offered!

Other than the nod and the grin, Mat didn't offer any words. She had in the previous battle out of frustration, but now she returned to her normal method. There would be time for talk after the spar. She circled Vatra slowly, keeping a close eye on her before darting in to swipe at her paws.

Excited Apathy

Vatra casually cracked her neck with a faint 'pop' before striding back out onto the sands. She returned Mate'moto's greeting with a feral grin of her own, feeling satisfied to be pitted against another soldier. Her nerves still thrummed from the excitement of her last battle, a thirst for combat surging within her. This lioness was all but guaranteed to deliver a satisfying fight no matter the outcome. Soldiers didn't tend to play tricky games like guards did.

Ruby eyes focused on the lioness circling her, watching for the inevitable attack. When it came, it was not the direct strike she expected, but a darting feint at her paws. She snarled as it tripped her up, and regaining her balance ensured that a returning swing went wide of its mark.

Mat managed to dodge the following attack, which was a good way to start. Unfortunately she got a little tripped up on her own paws and as she tried to strike again, she misjudged the distance and swung wide. A snarl escaped her as she tried to keep her balance, stepping away to regroup.

Dodging her opponent was easier than it should have been, as Matemoto stumbled. Vatra suppressed disappointment. She damn well didn't want to get beaten into a paste or publicly embarassed, but she wanted a 'real' fight. Contact, testing of power, adrenaline.

She'd keep being disappointed in that, for now. Mate'moto was quick, Vatra's own strike was late, and she hit nothing but air. Her ears flicked back, and the big red-and-white lioness rumbled in frustration.

Move 3: Hit

Mat was thankful she was quick enough on her paws to dodge the attack that followed her own. So far they were still testing the waters, but she knew it wouldn't stay that way for long. They were both hungry for a victory and sooner or later the tension that was building would snap and a proper spar would take place.

The annoyed growl that Vatra gave off was echoed by Mat. She wasn't going to go easy on this female, heck no! Finding her footing again, she tried her attempt at landing a hit once more. This time she didn't pause as she charged forward, only shifting her weight a bit to toss her shoulder against the other soldier's chest. Hopefully a solid hit would either knock her off her paws a bit or render her breathless.

Vatra was half expecting another feint, a hit-and-run. Instead her opponent didn't so much as pause.

Whoof.

Air left Vatra's lungs in a rush as the other lioness slammed into her chest. Staggered, her attempt at a counterattack missed completely. Damn it! She'd better steady her footing before she made an utter fool of herself.

Mat ducked her head to roll her weight to one side, pulling a sharp turn to avoid the flying paws of Vatra. Claws coming out, she dug them deeply into the sand to keep her turn tight, her body spinning as she came full circle to once again face her opponent. Unfortunately she misjudged how tight she had circled, or in this case how far she had moved away from the other lioness, so when she swung at her again it went wide by a few inches.

Sloppy, she thought to herself as she bared her teeth in frustration. It was clear neither lioness was pleased with her performance in this round.

Maybe a match like this was inevitable. It was further along in the tournament, and neither lioness was fresh. Fighting hard was what had gotten them both this far, and it was bound to sap them. It still rankled, and as she felt the breeze of her opponent's strike Vatra resolved to at least hit the other lioness this round. She gathered herself and barreled forward, looking as though she were going in for a direct hit before suddenly veering to the side and swiping at Mate'moto's paws. It wasn't a solid strike, but if she could trip the darker lioness up then she might have an opportunity to land one.

This was a less than stellar performance, Mat couldn't deny. It was a bit embarrassing they had both missed so much, especially after getting so far into the competition. Her irritation at herself was growing so much so that Vatra charged towards her without the dark lioness so much as flinching or trying to dodge. She simply steeled herself for an attack, teeth bared and head down. The lighter lioness shifted into a feint, though, which allowed Mat to shift her weight and absorb the light blow to her front legs. It didn't trip her up, but it did get her moving again so she wouldn't be swept off her feet.

She planted one paw hard into the sand and pushed up, rising a bit onto her hind paws as she lunged forward for one final blow. Raising a paw, she swung hard at Vatra's jaw, aiming to stun her and end the battle.

Damn. That had accomplished ********, really. Well, screw it. Vatra was tired of dodging, and tired of missing. Maybe taking some hits would encourage both lionesses to focus more in their next match. She braced herself for the inevitable attack, jaw set and eyes flashing defiance. The impact made her reel, but she pushed through the stars sparking in her vision to catch Mate'moto in a ferocious counterattack.

Finally satisfied to have at least landed a direct hit, she fell back, yielding. "You have this one. Shape up and get your head back in it before the next round--I want to say a General beat me." She flashed a grin, attempting to show she meant no ill by her words. She was s**t at encouragement, to be honest. That kind of warmth wasn't her strong suit even when she wasn't a little pissed at herself.

Mat was glad the fight ended the way that it did - with both of them landing solid hits. Her jaw ached from where Vatra had returned her blow, but she grinned through it with a triumphant fire in her eyes. This was it. She was on to the final round. Who knew what awaited her there, but whatever it was, she was sure she was ready for it.

"You too. I don't expect you to have come this far to settle for Captain," she returned. It would be fitting for the last two females standing to take the final win, after all.

Content with her victory - even if it hadn't been pretty - Mat turned to head off of the battle arena to ready herself for her final match.
