So one of my favourite parts of creating SU OCs is coming up with headcanons about their gem type or about gems as a race. So, I thought it'd be cool to make a topic to share this with everyone!

Got a headcanon? Share it-- Post away!

So one of my headcanons is about gems as a race and I call it the Twinning Headcanon.

Twinning is an actual process that happens with some classes of gems, including quartz (mostly), topaz, beryls (Emeralds), and even diamonds! Basically what happens is under certain growing conditions, two crystals will grow and look basically identical, but do so in two different directions.

Here's a few examples;

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. (Diamond) User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. (Quartz) User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. (Heliodor, AKA Yellow Beryl or Yellow Emerald)

So the headcanon is as follows; in a Kindergarten, as two gems are growing next to eachother and emerge at the same time (Or very close), the two gems will become "imprinted" with oneanother and develop a very close, usually platonic, bond within minutes of emerging. The two gems will then become very in sync with eachother, so much that fusion not only comes very naturally to them, but also so much that their combat styles together become so strong, often they don't even need fusion. They also can sense eachother's emotions and usually can't keep secrets from eachother. The main downside is it can be very difficult to separate the two gems as they sometimes develop a bordering unhealthy codependency. Usually they don't bother trying as it's more advantageous to station twin gems together.

Twins are usually gems of the same type, but also can happen with gems that are the same classification but different types. (Like two different kinds of quartzes) All that is required is that the two gems grow next to eachother. They are also usually few and far in between. It's the closest thing gems can have to having a "family" on Homeworld.

I used this headcanon with two other gems I made, Lignite (Jet) and Ivory. I chose those mainly because they aren't true "gems", but rather are mineraloids made from organic matter, like Pearls. Sorry, this headcanon was longer than I expected. sweatdrop If anyone likes this though, you have my permission to use it! (Please tell me though, I would like to see it!)

Finally posting in here!!

I surprisingly haven't seen a lot of talk about this one.

In the episode where Steven is playing with the Rubies ship's calibrations, the gems are reduced to a very tiny size. This is in the system's database of actual gem types, so gems that small do exist in canon!

Ruby and Sapphire are roughly the same size, but their classes in society are vastly different. The same goes for Pearl and Lapis.

My hc is that those size gems have certain classes; espionage, entertainment, and working class.

I could see it! The small size is probably advantageous because it looks nonthreatening for espionage purposes. Doesn't really explain why soldiers look so small, though, but I guess it's so they don't step on their escorts sapphires xD

My headcanon about Mahogany Obsidian gems is that they are extremely difficult to make. The iron in the gem tends to interfere with the creation process, often resulting in a dead gem or a defective one. This is why my gemsona had to be created by unorthodox means.
