He had snow pants. He had a winter coat. He had a scarf, and a hat, and heavy gloves that hooked into his sleeves. When it came to the cold, Asher was generally prepared -- prepared enough to risk the wind tunnel down those major avenues, protected against snowstorms where bike tires skidded out from under him and water slid down the back of his neck.

However, he did not have a sled.

This didn't stop him. Faced with a beautiful hill, he could hardly resist its pull, hunting through the things he had in search of something that could serve. Something durable or cheap, waterproof or that he could throw away --

And he settled on the age old tradition. Cardboard box, collapsed.

He'd had three. Now, after only fifteen minutes, he was down to one: one that barely served to get him down the hill, and was on the edge of collapsing into dust, soggy and limp. It stuttered and slowed as he went.

Sylvia was not always a fan of the cold, but she wasn’t afraid of it either. She’d grown up with it. With poofy jackets and pants that swished with every step, covered fingers and hats with (oh-so-fashionable) pom-poms on top. Luckily, she had grown into slightly more stylish ways to keep warm, so that on days like today she didn’t look entirely ridiculous.

Despite waking up with a bit of a chill, she’d wondered if the snow was sticky enough to build a snowman. It had been years since she had built one. And for some reason, it looked like the Prytaneum could use a snowman. Or maybe a few. So she layered up with a sweater and her long powder-blue coat, grey gloves and a hat to match, and her tall grey boots, and headed out to stack some snowballs.

Before she started building, she decided to take a walk to warm up and take a survey of available areas for a snowman build. She hadn’t been out long when she came to the hill near the main buildings, and had to check herself when she saw a shape sliding down the hill. She stopped as she realized that it was a fellow Chosen, hardly making decent progress on what appeared to be the soggy remnants of a cardboard box from the corner she could she.

Sylvia smiled as he stuttered to a halt a few feet away from where she’d stopped. She nodded at his makeshift sled and the messy tracks behind him. “Looks like you’ve given that thing a run for its money.”

"It was meant for greater things." Asher's tone was dry, easy, dismissive, as he stood. He smacked snow from his pants and side, frowned at the battered-and-destroyed piece of cardboard. Usually Asher had a skinny, angular vibe to him. Today, all bundled up, he looked three or four sizes larger, round at the edges.

Idly, he pushed up the edge of his hat to squint at Sylvia in the snow-dazzled sunlight. A strand of hair, damp, curled along his cheekbone and tucked into the corner of his mouth. "Do I know you?"

Sylvia gave a light snort of amusement at his response. Boxes were a good improvisation for sledding, but she wished she had a proper sled to offer now that it was used to its sopping end. Perhaps there was another option somewhere. Were there garbage bins nearby? She tried to remember.

His question made her look from the box up to him. She squinted at the bundled man before her, then gave a light shake of her head; she couldn’t remember having met him, even if she felt fairly sure he’d been around. “I don’t think we’ve crossed paths yet.” She offered a smile, though her hands remained tightly folded against the cold, “I’m Sylvia.”

"Sylvia. Asher." He started to hold out his own hand -- mitten-clad, with clumps of snow still stuck to the fabric -- and then made a face at her hands clutched in toward herself daintily. Instead, he reached out to take the cardboard box, already destroyed, and to fold it up into a much smaller bundle, out of the way.

"This was a failed experiment, I think. It's too wet, maybe?"

She smiled and offered a nod, “Nice to meet you.” She did realize that she would have to extract her hands soon, especially if she still planned to build a snowman. But she was working up to that. Hopefully he wasn’t too offended.

Sylvia sized up the box and gave it a sad nod, “Decidedly so. A good idea for another day. Perhaps if it were colder, not so quick to melt.” She raised a brow, then gave him a bright look, “Clearly we need to acquire better options.” And actually, gathering sleds for anyone who wanted to use them didn’t seem like a terrible idea. Who didn’t need to blow off some steam now and then?

She squinted at him. “Was that something you had off-hand, or have you searched for other possibilities and been left wanting?” There was the slightest edge of dramatic flair to the end of her question.

"Out behind Hephaestus building, there was a whole stack of them -" He nodded in that direction, tossing the shredded cardboard to one side and stooping down to swipe both his legs dry. Slowly, Asher's attention turned back up the hill: took in the heavy snowdrifts that hid its shape, humming between his teeth as he considered. Sledding was out of the question now that there was nothing to carry his weight, but rolling down might still be fun. Cold, but fun.

"There's always weird stuff there." He sounded distracted, now, though. Barely paying attention to her. "Some weirder than others. Busted cardboard boxes are pretty tame by comparison."

Sylvia frowned slightly and gave a nod, turning her head to follow Asher’s nod. It seemed to make sense that Hephaestus would have a bunch of boxes laying around. Though, she had to wonder if one of the Hephaestus Chosen wouldn’t be able to just make something a bit more fitting. They were crafty. Then again, plenty of them were a little more industrial, and depending on the materials available, a metal sled might not go as far as Asher would hope anyway.

She turned back to Asher as he continued, but his voice wasn’t as strong as before. She squinted at him as he gazed up the hill. “All that weird stuff and only a cardboard box for potential sledding. They’re clearly not as prepared as they shoot be,” she shook her head mockingly. She looked back up the hill with him, and took a step closer as she lowered her voice, “Have you thought of a better possibility already?” He seemed, at least, to be considering the hill with a good deal of focus, and she was curious why.
