Running AWAY from the portal with Shu + SantaWas this who they had been calling 'Santa' all along? Max gave him a very suspicious look. It was a bit like the times he'd run into particularly unconvincing 'Santas' in ill-fitting red suits while hanging around the mall during Christmas time; it sort of ruined the magic, but not necessarily the fun. This place was definitely still a lot of fun, even after the explosion. Messy, but fun. This 'Santa' still needed help regardless, and he knew he couldn't just hide and wait for everything to be okay again. With a deep breath (which he coughed out immediately afterwards due to the soot), he trudged through the snow towards Shu and the very insistent man dressed as Santa. He grabbed onto his arm just above where Shu was holding onto him, and offered her an apologetic smile. "Soooorry, Shu! It's just that you said we could go see Santa! And anyways, I kinda think I feel like I'm safest with you, so with you's the safest spot to be!"

Saved from the portalIt made no sense whatsoever for Liam to sincerely be trying to stop her from going in there, so Caroline stopped for the time being and ruffled his hair. What a weird joke! She decided she could humor him a bit by explaining her side of this to him. "Hah, you're so silly! Ever said something like, 'that's calling my name'?" she asked, pointing towards the portal to demonstrate that she was describing how it felt. "It's just like I wanted Mimsy to know, it's--you know, you just have to find the rabbit hole! Like this! See? That's not Wonderland, but...ooh, maybe a winter Wonderland! Can't you tell? Can't--see, just look! In there is everything I need to make sure everyone's happy. It'll mean all my kids can be happy. Even the scary one!" As passionate as the words themselves might have been in her argument, her voice didn't carry the same cadence. Every word she spoke sounded like she was very cheerfully wishing him a happy holidays, albeit in a very roundabout way.

Running AWAY from the portal + helping save Santa
Jordan had been a bit singed by the explosion. More importantly, it had blown his present right out of his hand, and he was about to start looking for the tamagotchi when he spotted the portal. The portal looked like bad news, swirling black and disintegrating everything it touched, and of course Santa, who was looking more and more like Allan, was headed that way. If Allan-not-Santa got devoured by the portal, Christmas would definitely get ruined.
He made his (slightly wobbly) way over through the snow to grab onto Santa's arm and try to reverse direction. "There's more Christmas wishes over this way," he tried.

Still moving away from the portal with Caroline"Yeah but-" He started to protest, only to falter as she continued in trying to explain why she was trying to get herself sucked into a giant swirling vortex of utter destruction. His frown deepened as he lifted her gave from her cheerful face, to the portal, and the peppermint tree that had just torn free of the ground and disintegrated as it met the darkness. He lifted his free hand to gesture at the destruction imploringly. He wasn't eloquent enough for this, but surely she could see why going towards it was a bad idea. Or maybe not. The Moon let out a small keening sound as it became obvious that his logic was not hitting it's mark. Something was wrong here, and he didn't know what, but he couldn't let her walk blithely into danger.

Running away from the portal, heading towards Liam and CarolineThe last full memory Harper had was waving to Liam and Caroline before the lead showed up and whisked everyone away towards a train. From there it was just sugar, and joy, and probably a little too much sugar that for the most part sent the sun hunter into high that made everything look like a blur, like if she had starred out of the train window too long. Then there was a loud noise, something resembling a boom, or maybe too many drummers drumming, memory wasn’t completely clear on details but all she knew was that she wasn’t moving any more. No instead Harper was looking up at the sky and some dark vortex that gingerly pulled up peppermint trees like twigs and hunters breaking into various directions. Scrambling to her feet she shook of the toasted marshmallow like snow before looking around for Liam and Caroline running in their direction. “Hey, are both of you ok?”

No one could possibly have convinced Caroline that the portal was not her next destination. Her mind was made up at the first sight of it, and her desire to make it through had only grown stronger with each passing second. Distracting her, however, was working very well - if only by accident. As Harper approached them, she gasped with girlish glee and unpinned a bit of the mistletoe she'd been wearing in her hair. A few of the tiny leaves were a bit crispy at the edges, but it had held up well enough to remain in one piece. "Mistletooooeee," she chimed in singsong, holding it in the space above Liam and Harper's heads.

Running from portal, looking for KyleMatt nodded slowly tucking his hands into his coat pocket before heading towards the lighthouse, the sun hunter trudging along side him as he started to wish that he had put on more of his snow gear. He had bought them both new snow suits, boots, the whole works when they had gone on their vacation for Christmas to one of the snow lodge cabins. Too late now he thought as they reached the lighthouse courtyard just in time to see the Caelius step through a portal with candy stuck to him. It would have been rather comical except he didn’t seem all that happy, nor did he appreciate the sudden shove into the portal and being dumped out into the Christmas edition of Candylane. He hadn’t mentioned it but it was one of the few games his mother had considered a complete waste of time and didn’t allow him or Sarah ever play it as children and he was starting to understand why. Before Kyle and he could do anything they were whisked away on a train and Santa only to have something, like always, go horribly wrong. The noise almost echoed in the hunter’s ears as he reached to grab the sun’s wrist only to have it pulled from his grasp as the train shuddered and lurched into various directions scattering occupants out into the snow. Blinking a few time, Matt rubbed the soot from his eyes before rushing to his feet ignoring the fact that from head to toe he was black as night. “KYLE?!” s**t… He muttered underneath his breath realizing that the familiar face wasn’t anywhere around him as he tried to pick out the other various hunters tossed around in the snow. For once he regretted they all poor the same similar coat, the white with gold trim, even with the embroidery decorating the edges it was still hard to tell apart in the snow.

Running from the portal, found a Matt
There were a great many things that happened over the past couple of minutes. First Kyle was making his way alongside Matt to the lighthouse in order to be briefed on the mission that Caelius had purportedly volunteered all of them for. The next thing he knew, he was through the portal and somehow managed to land himself on the very train that they were supposed to wreck, only to have it suddenly explode literally in his face.
W-What happened...
The Sun got up, blinking a few times as he tried to ignore the ringing sound in his ears while reassessing the situation. There was "Santa" who both looked and sounded suspiciously like his division leader Allan with the seemingly random use of the Japanese word nakama as a couple of other hunters tried to thwart his attempts at dragging himself and what was left of the train post-explosion towards what appeared to be an ominous looking black hole-like portal that was growing in size and destroying everything that got sucked into it.
Matt... where's Matt? Did he make it through the explosion alright?
As if on cue, that was when Kyle heard Matt calling out to him. Turning towards where the voice was coming from, the Sun finally found the older Moon hunter who was currently covered in a layer of soot from head to toe and looked pretty much the part of a life-sized soot ball from a certain Japanese anime movie with blue eyes.
"Matt?"

The older Moon looked rather cute really like that. Not that Kyle was in the right frame of mind to tell him at this point given that the both of them still needed to get away from that portal. Taking hold of Matt's arm, he gave him a quick look over, relieved to see that he was otherwise alright on initial inspection.
"Are you alright? We need to go..."

Running AWAY from the portal with Max + saving SantaThe suction got harder, and the fact that Santa had no will to stop worsened the situation even more people joined in pulling him back. Then Max came too in her surprise. Even she didn't wish to put her friend in possible danger, she hadn't deny his action. "No need to be sorry, you did nothing wrong." She beamed instead of giving him a hug since her hands were busy. "Does that make me a knight? I'll make sure you're safe!" Shu giggled, amused by Max's thought. Come on, Santa. They can't lose another important person. "Santa can't go there, we need you the next year, next next year, next next next year and so on. How can a Christmas without a Santa? Don't go~!" The petite Death contiued to convince Santa with her words and gave Max a glance to tell him to say something as well. Throughout her life, she had failed many many times but that didn't stop her desire to try, having a thought of maybe the next time she'd make it.

The crater in the sky continued to stretch, thin black lines extending all directions. Hunters were shouting, a hapless few sucked into the hole unaware, others running away barely, sacrificing every toy, alive piece of candy and train part in the process.
Even the snow itself seemed to turn unpliable, the distance thinning between safety and the eye of the vortex. There was no safe way out, their efforts like lab rats losing a battle against their own tread-wheel-
- And then darkness.
It felt surprisingly quiet inside the void. It felt peaceful, the deafening silence familiar. All around them floated bodies; it was impossible to tell if they were dead or alive, and odd, broken grey pieces of toys and candy. It wouldn't be so bad to close their eyes, really, what was the worst that could happen afterwards?
Do you remember it?
A strange sensation bubbled within the surface, a memory, a feeling that reached all trapped within. It was the struggle against sleep, the need to keep on fighting, the need to persevere regardless. The need to wake up from the eternal nightmare and remember something so important it was the foundation of who they were and everything they had experienced.
What was it that you were missing this entire time?
There was no obvious answer quite yet, but there was enough. Enough for them to pull themselves from sleep, to wake up, to struggle against the emptiness, to gaze blindly around-
- As the darkness finally heaved and relinquished them, as they fell and fell and fell through a thousand rabbit holes-
- And landed back in the snow.
Not cotton candy snow, and there was not a single peppermint candy in sight, but it was the familiar simple snow of the island. They had somehow, made it back home and the feeling of Joy was gone, leaving only the slowly increasing dread of what had actually happened. Yet despite the train, explosions, Santa, candycanes, and everything else, nobody was willing to explain exactly what that strange black hole portal was or exactly what had happened within it to even allow them to escape.
"Santa" was there in the courtyard too, and now it was obviously the Sun lead: he had a sheepish smile, but thanked Shu, Jason, Jake and Jordan individually; without them it was hard to tell if he would have made it out.
Surprisingly, there were no reported casualties, and most of the Hunters looked scuffled, the more injured ones already being escorted away. Mark and his lead were nowhere to be seen, which was pretty standard, though the Death Assistant could be easily located in his "lair" mostly talking and shaking his head to himself. Caelius wouldn't return back to the island until three days later, though that and the act of compartmentalizing were pretty standard too.
On the same night, on Christmas Eve, those who had made it safely would see two Christmas gifts propped against their doors: the first was a great big gift box full of Asian confections that had a big smiley face written on the card that simply said "From Santa". The second was a gift that kept on giving: an empty mission report form.
And then the most mysterious gift was a third that appeared the next morning on their beds: a plate of cookies that looked exactly like them.
