"I hope so," Lark said, and she pulled her knees up and wrapped her arms around them. It had disappointed the six-year-old in her when she'd discovered that she wasn't the only Chosen like the teen novels always said. She should have known, though. What good was one tiny artist against... whatever? Now she thought she liked it. There were people to relate to and share with, and it wasn't like it was a free and open public club. Anyway, she had enjoyed the company of those that she had met thus far.

"I haven't done much, you know? Not with weapons, not with magic. Nothing, as a matter of fact. I've done nothing." She laughed slightly and her gaze returned to Beth, whereas previously it has drifted out over the sea. "Do you ever find out why they chose you? Or is it just sort of a... I don't know. Figure-it-out-as-you-go sort of thing?" Rob had seemed to be partaking in a bit of the latter.

Beth's gaze softened as Lark's body language grew more insecure. There was something childlike about her in the moment--though she was sure Lark was close to her age. She tried to remind herself that the Dionysus Chosen was new to the entire business. She remembered her own doubts about the Choosing. Taking in a breath, she offered what she hoped was an encouraging smile. "You're asking a question that's been around since there have been gods to choose mortals. If Hera has some specific reason for Choosing me, She hasn't exactly told me what it is. I think it's not too much to trust in the gods. And in the meantime, there are plenty of things one can do in their names, if it's purpose you're wanting." She tilted her head. "If you're worried about not being trained, well, you can always spar with others. Though it's nothing like the real thing, anything is better than going in blind, don't you think?"

Lark listened quietly, smiling all the while. So Beth didn't know either, then. That was something of a comfort. She'd been here half a year and she still didn't know. Maybe they were never meant to know, like an existential question nobody had the answer to. It was nice to know that there were things to be done to acquire favor as well. Rob seemed well ahead of her on that, but of course he would be. She knew next to nothing about the creation of booze.

"Yeah, I want to get a few spars in before anything happens. I guess it'll have to be soon. Do you get any warning before they call us out for a mission?"

"Not really. It's all 'Let's get together in the Hearth in about 10 minutes okay?' And you get there and you think maybe there's going to be a buffet. But no it's 'surprise, you're the buffet,' and by 'you're the buffet,' they mean that we're going through the Hearth and hopefully don't get eaten by the monsters on the other side. Or pooped on." She sighed, knowing this probably didn't make sense to Lark. "You'd think that they'd wait for the people who stay in the mundane world to get here before sending us off into the breach. But I think it's really just a call to arms for the people already here."

One more reason to reestablish life outside the Prytaneum.

Lark did give Beth a bit of a look. Pooped-on? Why in the world was 'pooped-on' in the same sentence as 'eaten?' That hardly seemed like an equivalent threat. Her confusion fizzled after a quick moment, though, and her smile returned. Well there had to be a reason.

"That bad, huh? I guess I'll just have to be ready, then. I mean, as ready as I can be, right? What sort of weapon do you use? Or shield. Maybe we could spar some time?" Beth was at least a similar size to make it relatively fair.

Beth laughed. "Well, I was definitely ready to drink after both of the little adventures I was on, so," she trailed off with a shrug. "Some of us adapt to it better than others, I guess. My friends and I went out and tried to make little survival kits, but they're nothing you can't find with a little bit of research on the internet. Try not to get caught unawares, you know?"

"I use a whip. I have learned my lesson, though, and I'm not really one for spars."
Her face darkened a bit. "It's really hard to danger proof a leather rope, as it turns out."

Lark nodded, totally unfazed. Denied requests could only get to you if you let it! There were so many worse things in the world than having to find another sparring partners.

"That's cool! I don't mind. I can imagine it is. I'm not sure yet what I want to pick up. I've never used anything. No bows, though. Archery isn't something I feel like I can pick up before the next... adventure, mission, whatever."

Beth was surprised by this pragmatism. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Pretty much anyone can swing a sword or throw a punch. Hitting something over there from over here with an over-glorified slingshot seems a bit complicated by comparison." As with a lot in her life, she chose her weapon on a whim. It amused her.

She thought about the weapons she remembered from the racks in the Gym. "Have you thought about a javelin? Or a shield? Maybe a staff." She mentally estimated Lark's arm strength. She was a slip of a girl, so she decided against mentioning the brass knuckles.

Lark considered this for a moment. A javelin seemed like something too close to a ranged weapon, but a shield? She'd bet that she could lift a little one. Didn't that sort of mean coming up to the front lines, though? protecting other people?

"I don't know. Maybe I'll try some different things out... or finds the Weapons Master." He was pretty damn cute, but better than that he knew what the heck he was doing! "I'm not exactly of warrior-build. Hah. Anyway!" Lark stood up and brushed off her pants out on the sand, away from the mat. "I'll leave you to read. We should hang out some time!" She paused for just a moment. "Oh, but you never told me your boots are from." The blonde pointed down to them. She hadn't been lying about liking the boots!

Beth nodded. She could sympathize with not feeling quite warrior-y enough to keep up.

"Would you believe eBay? Thank god for the wonders of the internet, am I right?" She laughed. "I'd love to hang out again. Have fun painting!"

It was a nice feeling, to have expanded her social circle on a day she expected to stay totally alone. She made a note to find Lark the next time they went out on a mission.

"Ooh, really?!" Lark asked. She'd have to go on a search! EBay was definitely her friend at this point. She grinned and gave Beth one final wave. Cool. That was two people she liked in this remote wilderness!
