Coco looked around her dorm room, at the plushies on her bed and the picture of Calypso by her bedside. Coco was heading off to the art room to work on a new art piece she needed to finish so she could graduate junior year. She had a couple different projects she needed to do to fulfill the requirements. It made Coco so nervous, thinking if she made a mistake maybe the teachers would refuse to let her into Grendel and her whole life would be ruined. It made Coco want to cry thinking about it, she had always been a shy little squishy. Coco arrived in the art room, she looked around nervously. She was still very shy and soft spoken with new people. She had finally gained a little confidence in her interactions with Calypso but even then Calie was the strong force in their relationship while Coco was a soft gentle cuddlier. Coco picked up her canvas and put it on the easel, then she gathered the paint she needed to work with, which was pretty much every color. She looked at the blank canvas biting her lip thinking what was she going to do. Coco hummed softly while she was thinking. Then she started to sketch out the scene she wanted to paint with trees, small Bellow flowers. A female that looked a lot like her sweetie Calie. Coco smiled softly as the piece she wanted to create started to come to life on the canvas.

Flax had been working on photorealism since he picked up a pencil, but he knew now that he wanted to be an illustrator. The transition between mediums had been... difficult. Even though he had never quite gotten there with the proportions and shading of photorealism, the style was still in the muscles of his hands, and as he tried for a more cartoony form of work, his drawings often came out looking sort of like pieces of different bodies had been haphazardly sewn together. The Nixie studied his latest abomination and sighed. When this sort of thing came up, it was always good for him to think about what Laurel would say. She'd only tell me my work is beautiful, he thought to himself, and it made his chest feel warm.
He had just started on a new piece when a classmate of him entered the room, a shy demon girl. He was sitting quietly in the corner, and when she walked in he remembered just then that they were supposed to critique a piece of each others' and report the experience for class on Monday. It had been a way for the teacher to get everyone to try to understand everyone's unique technique and style, and Flax had been dreading the assignment because he was somewhere in-between at the moment. He watched Coco as she sat down and began to paint, then lowered his head and began to scribble some kind of monstrosity. It was supposed to be a geist playing basketball, but after only a few minutes of work, Flax thought it kind of looked like a rocket ship. He frowned, but got up from his seat and shuffled over to the other girl.
"Hey, Coco," he said gently, careful not to startle her. "I'm glad I ran into you. Aren't we supposed to critique a piece for each other this weekend?" In his nervousness, Flax toyed with a corner of his work.

Coco preferred to work in softer gentle realism in her art, looking at the piece she was working on you could tell what she was making, even though it was not what you would see looking at a photograph. Coco enjoyed pouring out her soft heart onto the canvas to create something that was all her. Coco had wanted to be an artist since she was a little freshling, the dream in her heart had not changed as she grew older. She had never really thought about asking Calie to look over her work, really she would rather no one tell her what they thought. Last time someone had commented Coco had gotten so upset, but to be a real artist Coco had to learn to listen and learn from others. Coco hadn't noticed Flax as she continued to work on her park with her sweetheart hidden in the picture. Coco jumped making a streak of pastel green across an area that she meant to make a park bench. Her eyes went wide as she turned and looked at Flax "Oh I'm so sorry I didn't notice you there." Coco said softly looking at her feet, not making eye contacts with the nixie who had the sketchbook in his lap. She brushed her hand against her cheek covering cheeks with pastel paint once again, which was a normal thing for Coco anyway. She normally wore paint more than she wore dresses. "Umm.. umm yes, uh I'm Coco.." She said softly Coco blushed feeling silly, then she looked back at her canvas trying to figure out how to fix her mistake.. Coco asked softly "What are you working on??"

Flax's heart went out to Coco as she started, and he felt a little guilty for interrupting her work so cacophonously even when he had tried to be quiet about it. He knew that Coco was quiet and gentle-mannered, and she didn't often speak much in class. She was the kind of person who could get lost in her work, the kind of person Flax wish he could be. If he weren't so analytical, if he could just go with the flow of what his soul was dictating... well, he would probably be somewhere other than here right now. "It's fine," he assured her, "I was being pretty quiet, I don't blame you." With his monotone colors, he probably managed to fade into the background anyway.
"Well, this is the piece I'm working on right now," he said, blushing a little as he handed her the embarrassment of a drawing. "I'm kind of in-between styles right now, so I understand if it looks kind of rough. I like what you're doing, though!" He gestured to the painting, a park with soft edges, softer colors, and a pastel green streak that marked right where Flax had inserted himself in her train of thought. The nixie felt a bit self-conscious, and he wrung his hands. Perhaps it was a good thing they were required to do this critique. Flax focused so much on his own work, he wondered if he'd ever even seen something of Coco's before. They had to have displayed their work in the same school galleries since they were freshlings, right? "Do you usually paint larger scenes like this?" Flax smiled softly at her to show that he meant no harm.

Coco wasn't very good at making friends, she wasn't very good at meeting others if Calie hadn't made the first move Coco wasn't sure how long it would have taken for her to find someone to go out with. Even thought Flax said it was ok, Coco still worried she had hurt their feelings by not noticing them sooner. She blamed herself for the mistake she made. Coco was always more likely to blame herself than she was to blame someone else. She was sure she had seen Flax in class but she was always too shy to start a conversation with anyone. "Umm no it was my fault.." She said softly "I should have looked to see if anyone else was here." She said shuffling her feet. Coco looked at Flax's work, she could see some good points to it and some bad one, but she would have trouble telling Flax what she didn't like, since she hated hurting others feelings. Coco blushed "Umm thank you.." She said softly Coco nodded "I was thinking of doing a mural with a friend a long time ago, but they moved away before we got a chance. So I was thinking of doing it by myself for my final project before graduation from junior. She said softly, she bit her lip and started to turn the green smear into a willow tree that brought something special to the painting. Coco smiled softly "Some mistakes make things better. Maybe you can try to turn that into something else, incorporating the structure of that drawing into something else.." Coco said almost a whisper she didn't want to upset Flax.

The nixie nodded as he listened to his classmate's words. Murals were always beautiful, and Coco's soft style would really bring an interesting flair to the atmosphere of the location. "I'd offer to help, but I don't really paint much," he said with a small smile. Maybe he should pick up the medium a bit more, but a pencil felt so much more predictable. With paint, if you used a bit too much pressure or mixed just the wrong color... well, it was hard to go back from it. Something which Coco was currently doing with an incredible amount of ease.
When she mentioned that he might turn his drawing into something else, Flax couldn't help but let loose a deep, throaty laugh. Coco was trying so hard to be nice, it was kind of adorable how she couldn't just tell him flat out that the drawing wasn't fantastic. "I don't like it much, either," he said, taking the sketchbook back from her and examining his poor anatomy. "I'm in between trying to draw photorealistically, and with a cartoon style, so I'm still working on how things... well, work." He took a pencil from behind his ear and began sketching over his rocket ship geist. Maybe he could just make it into a rocket ship.
Meanwhile, he was trying to find a way to critique Coco's work without hurting her feelings. The problem with critiques was that it involved pointing out the flaws in something that was very personal. After rounding out the edges of his rocket, he studied her painting again. He pointed to a darker spot in the painting. "Is that a person?" he asked, maroon eyes glancing back at the artist. "You should bring them out more, they look kind of hidden. I'm sure being able to see them would make the painting even more beautiful." Flax grinned at Coco, and hoped he wouldn't offend her.

Coco smiled a little and then said "Umm that's ok, I can do it myself.. I'm kinda used to that sort of thing anyway.." Coco didn't have a family, she lived at the orphanage before she had been accepted into the academy and started living in the dorm with the caretakers looking after her. Coco wasn't good at a lot of things, she couldn't sing or dance. Math was no fun. Here though when she was with a canvas and a palette of paint Coco felt at home. Coco laughed a little and blush and then said "Umm umm, I'm so sorry I didn't mean to laugh at you, it's good.." though her tone revealed that she really thought the drawing needed work. Coco's painting was coming along but she still had a long way to go before she was ready to call it done to dry. "Oh, I'm not really familiar with that sort of art." Coco said softly "I like doing soft impressions, so our art styles are really different." Coco wasn't very comfortable with chatting normally, but Flax didn't make her as nervous as some others did. Coco blushed and said softly "I kinda meant for it to be a secret feature.. something you have to look for in the art.." Coco got nervous talking over the critique.. "But I guess if that's a bad idea I can change it.." Her lack of confidence showing.

"If you're sure," Flax said, nodding a bit. "A mural's a big job! But I look forward to seeing it when you're done." Despite her shyness, Coco seemed as if she were opening up a bit. Flax himself had never needed to feel belonging any more than he already had - drawing is the only thing he knew how to do, and it was something he never wanted to stop doing. But beyond that, he had an older sister and two loving fathers that he could turn to if anything ever went wrong. And then there was sweet, lovely Laurel - his best friend, and then his lover. But the nixie was never adverse to making new friends at any opportunity he could get.
"Yeah, I've never really painted or done anything impressionistic," Flax said, looking at her painting. There was no way he could ever master colors the way painters did - lines were more up his alley. "I still enjoy it, though!" He listened to what Coco had to say about the person hidden in her art, and he gave a small gasp. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was meant to be hidden!" He chuckled a bit. "If it's supposed to be that way, then go ahead and do it. I don't think it's a bad idea at all." He studied the little figure a bit closer. Already, Coco had put a great amount of detail into the tiny person. "Do you ever make portraits?"

Coco nodded a little, still a bit uncertain.. Perhaps someday she would find the courage to be bold but today wasn't that day. Coco blushed a little and then mumbled. "Umm thank you.." It was easier for Coco to open up to someone kind, with someone cruel Coco might curl up into a sad little ball growing mushrooms in the corner of the room. Coco grew more quiet unsure what to say to Flax's comments. She finished her painting and started to clean up her things. Coco blushed again and then nodded softly she said "Yes." It was hard sometimes to make others understand personal art. Coco shook her head and said "I never thought of it before.. umm I don't have many friends." Coco said softly.

Flax's eyes widened, and he realized that what he said might have been rude without him meaning it. "Well, you're very talented!" he said, already eating his words. "I'm sure if you offered to do portraits, anyone would be interested. You could put signs up around the school. You could make friends that way!" He paused and thought about what she said. Even though he'd been in countless classes with Coco, he had never thought that she was, well, lonely, even if she was shy. "I'll be your first taker, if you want," the Nixie said eagerly, smiling gently. "I'll be your friend, too, if you're okay with it. We've never really talked but I've enjoyed having this conversation with you."

Coco blushed again, she wasn't sure what to say. She really wasn't used to someone complimenting her work. Coco bit her lip thinking. "I guess I could try to do portraits.." She said softly. It would mean talking to a lot more others and getting her name out there. Coco kept her head down during most of her classes, so she wasn't surprised that Flax and she hadn't really talked much before now. She wasn't upset that others didn't normally jump forward to embrace her. If that happened Coco would likely have freaked out and withdrawn completely. Coco needed things to go slowly normally. Except with Calypso, things had gone fast with that, but Coco's heart fluttering because Calie noticed her was ok. Coco smiled a little more and then said "Thank you, Flax that's sweet of you to offer, I would like to be your friend too. I like talking to you too." She said softly, as she finished up cleaning her art mess. "If you need more help with your critique for class let me know." She said writing down her cell number and email address handing it to Flax.

Flax took the information from Coco, glancing over it for a second before stuffing it in his pocket. "Thanks, you too!" he said, before ripping a corner off a blank sheet in his sketchbook and scribbling his own contact info on it in a barely legible script. He handed the paper to her, grinning, then stood. "I think I ought to get going," he admitted, thinking about seeing Laurel in the dining hall. He really hoped he'd run into her. "I'll see you around, Coco," the nixie said, giving her a final friendly wave before retreating from the room. Well, he hadn't exactly impressed her with his art, but at least he had made a new friend! And to Flax, that was most important.
