        Yêu Cậubé
        Story by Fore, 10.24.16

The campfire cackled and spat ash into the air, a faint glow lighting her cheekbones as she grew closer.

Let me tell you a tale; a tale of a lonely boy.

This boy was named Yêu Cậubé, or at least that's all anyone knew him as: "Weak Boy." He was a coward, a fraud; he wasn't strong, and couldn't do manual labor. He was scared, so he would not try new things. And he was a liar, doing everything in his power to get out of doing what was asked.

One night, when he parents had gone to sleep and he lied awake in bed, his window burst open with the high-pitched whistle of the wind and the worn wood of his shutters cracking against the walls. He heard a whisper amongst the gust of wind, a flutter of words trail in from outside: Yêu Cậubé, Yêu Cậubé, come to me, come to me.

The boy got out of bed, glanced outside, but did not see anything. He shut the shutters and crawled back into bed. It's nothing, he reassured himself. But as he closed his eyes, the whisper echoed within his mind. Yêu Cậubé, Yêu Cậubé, come to me, come to me.

The boy's eyes flashed open, but nobody was there. Some force, some aura beckoned him outside his room, and though he was fearful, he brushed aside his covers and ventured out. The whispers, gobbled nonsense now, continued to beckon him outside the house and down the hill. He rounded a few corners, taking him to the outskirts of town.

Before he realized how far he had come, he was faced with a large stone bridge leading into the Deep Woods. All of the children knew not to go into the Deep Woods, or your darkest demons would trap you there, lost to search for your soul for all of eternity. He was about to turn around when he suddenly heard a shriek! It wasn't far, not even in the Deep Woods. It had to be on just the other side of the stone bridge, he was sure of it! Though it was night, the moon was full and lit his path. He ran in hopes of saving the person who had screamed and getting both of them back safely, away from the Deep Woods.

The boy ran across the stone bridge and tripped on a loose stone near the middle. As he fell, his surroundings became surreal; what was once a solid path molded and pulled apart as if it were dough being stretched with human hands.

He fell into the stone and watched it molding over him. It was like cement was being poured into his very throat. He couldn't breathe, couldn't see, and it all turned into a dark blur as the last thing he heard was the shrill shriek of a voice not far away.

Don't venture towards the Deep Woods, or the demons will entrap your soul. They say the boy is still living within the rock, trying to find his strength to break free. If you go to the stone bridge leading into the Deep Woods and listen closely, you can still hear the screams of the children entrapped in the stone. But one voice stands out; the voice of the boy, whispering to those who wander past the very words of his undoing:

Yêu Cậubé, Yêu Cậubé, come to me, come to me.
