Joining Snagem certainly had its benefits. Lodging, food, pay, medical care. Particularly the latter, as it seemed to be the most prominent in priority at the moment. See, Kate had recently allowed herself to undergo a procedure which allowed her form to merge somewhat with her Roselia. The initial side effects weren't so bad. Weakness in the legs, queasiness, and the occasional fever. All of them could be solved with a bit of rest of a couple pain relievers at best. Recently, though, things had taken a darker turn. Kate often found herself bent over a garbage can or other waste container, coughing out mucus and a bit of purple liquid she found herself unable to identify. Given that it started post-transformation, it had to be linked.
So, Kate was ecstatic when she found out her first mission would be about gaining information on just what she desired- a cure all for poison. Something told her that maybe her superior, a man going by Sub, gave her such a mission on purpose. In any case, the sentiment was appreciated whether it was actually there or not.
Getting the information needed for constructing a cure all wasn't simple, though. Two poison experts hiding such documents were both high-profile, one more so than the other. There was Koga, Elite Four member and ninja alike. He tended to be a celebrity of sorts, making thievery from him an impossible task within itself. His daughter, however, was another story. She went by Janine, having inherited the gym previously run by her father. Much like Koga, Janine was considered to be one of the leading poison users out there. Also like Koga, Janine had inherited Koga's affinity for ninjas and the culture surrounding them.
Naturally, Janine was a much more ideal target than Koga for these reasons.
Stepping into Fuschia City, Kate couldn't help but twitch slightly in anxiety at the sight. The city was overflowing with life, flowerbeds and retention ponds painting the landscape. Despite being excited at the sight of so many flowers with her newfound affinity for them, Kate had to keep herself focused on the target- the gym. The building was nestled against a hill of sorts, carrying an ominous tone to it unlike the rest of the town. Situating herself within her baggy, black hoodie, Kate scuttled into the gym silently. Thankfully, it was night and nobody was around. The facility would hopefully be empty.
Kate stumbled in, sighing heavily before pulling out her phone. The Fuschia gym had a plethora of invisible walls, which made navigating it beyond annoying. Thankfully, many other trainers who had gotten lost in the maze decided to make it easier on everyone else by posting maps of the gym's layout. Sure, the walls moved every few months, but for now the maps were up to date.
Phone in one hand and pokeball in another, Kate crept along the floors of the gym. Walking along, Kate-
Bonk.
Owch. That hurt. The hybrid frowned and rubbed her forehead where she had made contact with the wall. Things not being 100% true on the internet all the time? Why, that was unheard of. Sulking from her slip-up, Kate kept going on. Things seemed to be going smoothly, though.
"Krrt."
Great. Kate made her way towards the arena, noticing a Venomoth, which she had assumed to be Janine's. The creature didn't seem aggressive, but rather confused as to why a stranger would be in the gym at such an ungodly hour in the morning. Further, why such a stranger had managed to wake it up. Attempting to defuse the situation, Kate held her hand out and gave a hushed hum. "Easy, now." An awkward pause, typical of Kate. "Hey, u-uh, look. I'm just like you." She parted her fingers, red dye and purple hues coating her hand- Poison Point.
The Venomoth seemed intrigued and fluttered closer, another "Krr" noise escaping the poison type.
"Yeah, freaky huh?" She grinned, cocking her head to the side and gently touching the moth's cheek. Since they were a poison type, it had no effect. Rather, the Venomoth leaned into the attention and began to purr softly.
There was a certain stillness to the calm, moonlight keeping things illuminated. Adjusting her hood with a spare hand, Kate tossed the pokeball down to reveal a Roselia. A few startled chirps escaped the Venomoth before the Roselia doused the moth in a dose of sleep powder.
"Krr ... Rrr?" The bug type faltered within the air in an attempt to fight for consciousness. The drowsiness was inevitable, though, and the Venomoth slid down to the ground before passing out.
Kate, whose hands were cupped her face as to keep herself from breathing in the powder nodded and dropped her hands. "Good job, Violet. Now, take care of the dust and get the scales. Just like how we practiced, alright?" Kate handed her pokemon a few vials and a small cloth bag she had been keeping in her hoodie pocket. The Roselia gave a nod, tending to the mess while their trainer went off.
A little known fact about pokemon gyms was that many of them contained supply cabinets or offices behind the main room. Extra badges, potions, and TM prizes alike could be found within in them. Thus, Kate made off for the office. Due to the rarity of certain items in them, like the badges, the rooms were usually locked. Thankfully, Kate was a woman of many secrets. One of these was a way to get past your basic lock-and-key door. Pulling out a revive from her pocket, she moved towards the door and began working on the knob. The revive, it seemed, had been fashioned into a skeleton key of sorts. Nifty, but it rendered the revive useless for battling purposes and typically had a one-time use for doors.
The door unlocked, and Kate made her way in. The room was slightly messy, a desk with papers strewn across the surface, a file cabinet with an unlocked drawer, a kotatsu resting in the corner. A form seemed to be sleeping under it, probably Janine and a few of her pokemon given that this was her office. Creeping towards the desk, Kate shuffled through some of the papers quietly. Most of them were rather boring paperwork-esq things. Apparently running a gym takes a lot of financing. After a few moments of searching, Kate deducted that the files had to be in the file cabinent. Why hadn't she checked there first?
As she predicted, the files were in there. Once plucking them out from the assorted arrangement of other documents, the hybrid turned to leave and make her way back to her Roselia. The sounds of chirping alerted her, though. The Venomoth must have woken up. Dashing in, Kate's suspicions were confirmed. Her Roselia was glaring at the Venomoth and attempting to whip up another round of sleep powder whilst the drowsy Venomoth began to chitter and chirp in order to possibly alert its trainer.
No use fighting at this point. Kate reached out, scooping up her Roselia and dashing out of the gym. That was easier said than done, though. Much like the way in, Kate ended up bonking the wall several times before finding the exit. Once getting out, however, Kate pulled out her hoverboard and glanced down at Violet. "Did you get the scales?" She whispered. The Roselia gave an obedient nod and held out the vials and bag. Vials for samples, bag for powdered evidence. "Then let's go," Kate quickly pocketed the materials, returning her pokemon to its pokeball before zipping off on the board.
Kate gave a sigh of relief, looking down at the bag of sleeping powder. Hopefully, that would be enough to keep her out of trouble. With no evidence, perhaps the encounter could be blamed on a ghost. After all, Kanto was infamous for having numerous ghost sightings given its large cemetery and criminal history.
For now, at least, Kaitlyn was content. The fact that she managed to get by her first mission was more than enough for her.
