Night time was starting to be one of Kaveri's favorite times of the day followed by twilight. Not only was it somewhat cooler to freezing and meant snuggling close to her mate but it was the time that being sneaky was the best. Tonight felt special though, she didn't really know why though it wasn't as if there was something actually special just felt different than normal. Cubs were grown into adults and doing whatever it was they were doing. It was just her and Uzi now.

"Uzi?" The female muttered gently as she nudged the sleeping form of her mate. The small makeshift den they had been staying in was comfortable but they should probably get a move on a new location. Not that this was a bad spot but she was itching for some travel again.

A small stretch and yawn from the water colored leopardess as she moved about their area.

Gebhuza stirred but didn’t open his eyes. While he would normally be alert and fully awake at the smallest hint of activity from Kaveri, he was still feeling a little lethargic, with the cloud of mild apathy he’d been under since his pride had disbanded. He missed the sense of belonging, of knowing whose orders he had to take and clearly knowing his mission in life. For a while, being a father had been enough of a distraction that allowed him to keep a measure of sanity and having Kaveri at his side had been more comforting than he cared to admit.

But now their children were all grown up and independent and that left him holding on to her like a life line. A part of him feared that now that the kids were living their own lives and Gebhuza no longer had the protection of a pride at his back, his mate would leave him. He was not a lion who like feeling dependent on anyone but he knew losing the pretty blue leopardess would break him.

“Mmm…?” Pushing his deepest fears aside, Gebhuza answered at last, because there was no way Kaveri would believe he hadn’t heard her and he’d been silent for too long already.

When he mate didn't move at first the blue female frowned. Ever since the pride disbanded and the cubs grew he was distracted and so unlike himself. Although she understood why he was like that it just drove her batty. Still she loved him and his flaws made him who he was. They needed something, some sort of structure though. That was something that she could agree on. If they had a pride they wouldn't need to look over their shoulder to make sure they were going to be ok. Although she had felt a tad lethargic as well since everything had settled back to being just them.

"Come on. We should leave the den and go do something. Anything." Although being here with her darling mate was great she needed to explore. To do something.

She waited a few moments and then began to clean around his mane. Mostly it was to get him to up. Part of her thought to give him a small nibble to get the dark male from the laying position to the sitting position. "Stop lazing about Uzi. We are both going through tough times. I think we should look for somewhere new to call home."

Tentatively, Gebhuza slowly opened his eyes and found it to be a mistake considering the pessimistic path his thoughts had taken. After all, when he saw Kav's elegant figure gleaming in the moonlight, he had to wonder why such a creature would ever bother with him. Their relationship had begun as a casual fling, a mid-mission distraction that had just not stopped, gotten too serious too quickly and led him to bring a near stranger back to his pride. And then, they'd realized she was pregnant with his cubs and he was not enough of a b*****d to even consider letting her go through that alone - or leaving his first litter without a father. But, most of all, he just couldn't let go of her.

Which was why he had to smile. Because, you know, 'we'. She said 'we' with the certainty of someone who believed that no matter where they went, they would do it together. Like the concept of splitting up had never crossed her mind. Silly male egos, so easily broken.

"Yes, we should." He was not proud enough to think he could protect her alone, not when many rogues traveled in groups and not all had good intentions. So now they had to find a pride that would take in felines of different species as well as their hybrid offspring. "We need to find a pride to settle in."

"I agree with you there. I am sure there is somewhere that we can call home. Maybe even if our cubs come back to us we can go as a family." Although the thought was there she was sure they had their own lives and their own decisions on places that they would like to go. Her motherly side wanted them to remain together but sometimes you needed to branch off away and find yourself first.

They were not defenseless but if they were to get outnumbered well that could be a different story. She nuzzled her mate happy to see him at least open to the idea even though she knew he would be.

Moving away from him she went to the edge of their den and peered out. What a gorgeous night and the moon giving them some light. They could hunt, scavenge, do anything their hearts desired.

"Not all will be willing to take us both." Gebhuza said softly, reading every tell on his mate's expression and feeling better now that he'd been reassured they would be making this decision together. He stood and walked calmly to his mate, towering over her as he rested his head gently on hers. "I suppose how well they accept us will tell which ones are worth considering."

He thought of his sons and daughters. Obviously, he hoped he'd taught them well enough to make them strong and independent but it would be a lie to say he didn't want to see them again. If he could, Gebhuza would keep them all by his side and guard them all zealously but that was not his way, the way he'd been thought. It didn't mean the feeling wasn't there.

"I miss our little devils." He said, after a moment and sighed deeply.

They would find the perfect pride that would accept that they were together and that they were not to be separated. If they didn't, well then that would be the pride they would not go to it was very simple. "You are very right my love." The female agreed. So many avenues to take just a matter of sorting them all out and figuring out which ones fit.

At the mention of their cubs her body seemed to slump just a touch. She missed them terribly and the thought of them made her visibly weak. They grew up too fast and all of a sudden they were on their own wishing to be adults. If only they could have stayed cubs forever.

"I miss them too. Maybe we will meet up with them as some point." the leopardess went to her mate's side and nuzzled him again. "Let's get going." And then leapt out of the den and began walking in a chosen direction. No more lazing about, time to find something, or maybe even hone their skills.

We could probably finish up here in the next few posts.

Gebhuza chuckled quietly when he heard the same kind of longing he was feeling on his mate's voice. He sighed again.

"You know..." He said with a sly grin, moving to her side as they walked. "If we have more children, we should keep them until they're old and mated." There was humor in his tone but also certainty. He did not like the idea on not knowing where his kids were, knowing nothing of their lives and not being able to help if they got in trouble. When he'd had a pride, it had been easier, expecting most of his children to stay near their parents but now... rogue life wasn't for everyone and some of his children might've traveled too far or joined other prides and he might never see them again. It was not a pleasant thought.

She bared her fangs back at him playfully. She would love to have cubs again and this time keep them closer to her at least for a while until they were sure they wanted to leave. But she did not want to have any cubs now, especially without a home. It was hard enough for two of them, bringing in a litter now while they on the move would be even harder.

"I don't know about old and mated, but I agree making them stay longer. However, I do not plan to have a litter of cubs while we have no home to call our own. I love you and I know that you would take great care of us but we are but two in a vast area with many possible misfortunes." She called back to him. "I'm sure one of these days we will see them again. Vast open area our own will once again find us. They learned well enough from you."

"They learned well. They're strong, all five of them." Gebhuza said with a toothy grin though his voice was quieter as they spoke of having a litter. He leaned to the side as they walked, seeking physical contact. "You're right. It's much too dangerous like this. We need the security of a pride before we even consider the idea."

And the idea was not without risks, of course. Some prides guarded their borders zealously and would sooner resort to violence than to talk with potentially threatening rogues. Some just wanted to kill anything that was was clearly Not-Them.

"We've decided, then?" He stopped, turning to look at his mate, seriously. This was a decisive moment, unlike the light bantering they'd been throwing at each other recently. He waited for her answer, reading her body language keenly. "We'll start searching for a pride...?"

Glad he agreed on that for now. Eventually they'd try again for cubs but it wasn't in the cards right now. She was glad he had taught them a few things before they had decided to leave their mother and father. "We shall start searching for a pride." How happy she was to begin a new journey to find their place. This would be exciting. Mate by her side with a drive to find their new permanent home. Not only would it be good for both of them but it would bring them even closer than they already were.

"Maybe we will even run into our babies on our way to look for a new home. If we do, maybe we can convince them to join us. If they want of course." She chuckled. "Onwards Uzi!"

I think we can go ahead and finish this. I put fin anyway, but if you want to make a last post that's fine.

"Wouldn't that be something...?" Gebhuza said quietly, sighed deeply. It would be something, alright. It would be perfect. What he wouldn't give to have the whole family together again. He offered his mate a grin full of sharp teeth and bumped against her as they walked. "Let's go then."
