On her way to Lunaria Forest, Kaalia takes a brief reprieve to hunt, and gain back her strength. During her search for prey, she runs into Kestrel who is searching for food himself to feed his pack. Knowing two is better than one (especially during these times), the duo agree to combine their skills for the hunt.

Destruction.

Nothing but mangled trees, flooded dens, bodies of fellow Varsythe dotting the terrain - sometimes not whole - was all Kaalia saw on her journey. Sky eyes became watered with tears with each thought that paced in her mind, often so suffocating she felt like giving up.

'Mourn the dead... Tend to the living.'

She kept that mantra in her heart, sometimes speaking it out loud over and over when the carnage became too much to bear. That howl earlier...the massive one that rekindled her spirit... its owner was waiting for her to find. Not just her, but Kaalia couldn't help but feel some kind of kinship to the voice. Her mission depended on her reaching the sacred forest to find him: The Heir, direct descendant to the White Alpha. He would know what to do. Would know how to bring everyone together.

The she-wolf bolted up a steep mound, her paws expertly finding purchase in the soft soil. As much as she made it look easy, the Guardian had to be careful. Sharp rocks, jagged tree branches, and vines were lurking within the seemingly safe terrain. One misstep, one wrong weight shift would set her back for days.

Maybe even the rest of her life.

"What did Grandmother tell me?" She thought to herself, her body unfurling as she leapt over a fallen tree with a grace only known to her, though landing was rough causing her to stumble slightly. Whenever Kaalia thought about her namesake, it always gave her courage to continue. An image of the stark white Gamma with kind, silver eyes and a playful tongue soon came to her mind. Then a voice like the sunrise flitted through her thoughts like the caress of Ailia's warm tongue: 'The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack. But when a wolf is alone, either by choice or not, it can be easy to become disheartened. You feel you lack purpose. Listen close now, my dear pup: Every wolf has purpose. Even the Outcast Omega. The White Alpha forsakes none, and loves all. So keep pushing, keep striving, never give up hope.

And for Alpha's sake, eat something! Can't do much without a full stomach. Especially not save the world.'
Laughter danced in her mind as the caress grew cold. Grandmother always had the strangest ways of reaching her. But her stomach definitely held her attention.

Kaalia slowed her pace, now entering a hunting state of mind. She was better and taking the lead from another experienced wolf, but luxuries were moot at this point. Nostrils flared, ears erect to catch any kind of scent of prey. At a time like this, they would definitely be scarce. Fear permeated her senses as she attempted to find some kind of life presence.

That's when she felt it. No, not it.

Him.

He was here?! Coming to a harsh stop at the top of a hill, she swept her eyes over the landscape searching for The Heir. Would he be white? By her luck he would be brown or green or invisible, and she's never find him. The last part made her chuckle. Not wanting to waste much time, she decided for another approach, a call. Kaalia tilted her head back giving a slightly short howl announcing her presence to the Descendant. Would he seek her? Was her senses tricking her? Kaalia would rather take the risk of possibly scaring prey than never knowing.

Now came the hard part.

Waiting.

x SI C K E N I N Gxxx , teasing, dread-filled words played in the Alpha's mind as he trotted from high ground to high ground, seeking a safe route for the Varsythe that would follow. Kestrel knew he had been right to Call everyone to meet at Lunaris, but also knew that far too many would be injured -- even lose their lives -- on the journey. But it had to be done. _Or does it? What if you're simply doing this for yourself, seeking Power, wanting to become a White Alpha in your own right?_ The Voice inside him chuckled. _You know what happened, back when the First Pack Shattered. The Pack lost its ties when the Alpha and Omega grew at odds, and the Heart of the Pack was lost. Is this you, attempting to find it?_

Kestrel's lips rose in a snarl as he shook his head, elongated ears pinned flat to his broad skull. I wish only to keep them safe, damn you! He hated that the Voice made him doubt himself, threw images of torn, broken and bleeding bodies across the landscape in a circle, with Kestrel standing in the middle looking triumphant, a strange gleaming, coruscating gem at his feet. It gave off an odd light, one that made his stomach churn to look at, and a crack ran down its center. Stop it. I do not seek that. I only want to do my Duty, to do as you have bade me. But I will not allow unnecessary deaths. The White male sprang off of his back feet, arcing over a small stream that hadn't been there before.

_All deaths are necessary, Kestrel._ There was no mocking in the words, simply stating fact. The Alpha made to answer when a howl split the silence, drawing his attention. Something about it... He could tell it was a female, and by lifting his nose and scenting the wind, caught the Delta's scent. Unfamiliar, so this is new territory to her. The Heir looked around at the southern end of the Howlshire Meadow, his heart sinking as he didn't recognize his own lands. As it is to all of us, I suppose. The pale wolf answered her howl, a musical lilt twining through his own, hearing the need in the Delta's call. He turned to the east and sprang into the ground-eating lope that he was known for, speeding past unfamiliar landmarks and raging torrents of rivers. These lands are no longer so gentle. He passed motionless forms, smelling no life from them, and bounded up a steep slope, cresting the top and coming to a halt.

His golden eyes fell on the red and white female, the bell hanging from his horn chiming merrily at the momentum from his quick stop. She held herself well, though not in challenge. Kestrel allowed a few moments to pass before speaking. "You wished to see me?" His voice was smooth, a lilting baritone. The Alpha's large size made him seem imposing to some, but Kestrel saw no fear in the she-wolf, only anticipation.

Even though it had only been a few moments, Kaalia felt like she was waiting hours. Her muscles began to burn as the adrenaline from the hard trek ebbed away; yet her excitement felt ten fold now. Her ears swiveled eagerly hoping to catch some sort of sound, her eyes hungrily devouring the landscape eager to see what this male would look like. Fates, seeing another Varsythe alive would do wonders for her right now. All this death and destruction had been sapping at her spirit. It would be nice to be able to talk to someone again.

At the sound of the response, her head snapped to the direction, toward the west. It was...soothing to say the least. There was power in that howl, but there was more. Kaalia's mind worked to dissect the presence of what was in his call. So distracted in her own thoughts that she almost missed his massive form loping easily up the hill. Sky eyes met with his yellow hues, and for a split second she felt something... Nostrils flared as she took in his scent becoming familiarized with the essence of who he was. The Heir had answered her, spoke to her, was there with her in body now, hulking frame of a wolf he was, muscle pronounced underneath. She could see the nobility in his stance, the coloration of his fur unique only to him, ears longer than most ending in a handsome point, and his horns adding to the fluidity of his presence. Her eyes swept over the length and curve of them, then stopped at the bell tied to the left. It was...cute. Definitely not something she would picture the Heir to have on his being, but cute none the less.

His voice snapped her from her thoughts. It, strangely enough, reminded Kaalia of her father's: the strength commanding all who heard it to listen, but the compassion and empathy blended within made one want to listen. 'Yes, I did wish to see you, didn't I? What should I say? How should I address him? Maybe this was a mistake, maybe I shouldn't have called him away. He could have been on some urgent mission and I just--'

"Hunt with me."

The words left her maw before she could even process what she wanted to do or say, but they felt right. Her voice was soft, the tone not necessarily begging or commanding. Her gaze shifted back to his eyes, locking on to them as her own conveyed a sense of calm. 'You can trust me.' They seemed to say as she took a few steps forward, stopping just short of his snout, her head now tilted up so that she could keep her eyes on him, body language emitting a non-threatening feel.

"My name is Kaalia, dear Alpha. I wish to aid you in the days to come. Right now, the world is ravaged, and Varsythe are scared, tired, hungry, and hopeless. For now, I believe that hunting would do us both some good. Food is scarce, but full bellies make for eased minds. Plus the stimulation of mind and body that a hunt provides will ease our stress..." The she-wolf had a knack for speaking to those she just met with a familiar tone. Whether they were above or below her station, she had never been afraid to voice her opinion. With the world that way it was now, she just hoped that the Heir would be forgiving of her intrusion. She wanted to help, truly she did; so if stepping out of bounds in a moment of crisis was wrong, then call her oathbreaker. So she stayed in her stance, her position, close proximity to him, awaiting for an answer, or a command,..or something.

x K ᴇ s ᴛ ʀ ᴇ ʟxxx quickly assessed the Delta before him; she was definitely unique. Most Vurfang, with the exception of other Alphas, would prostrate themselves before him. But Kestrel felt the excitement almost seeping out of Kaalia, as if she had been waiting for him. And when their gazes first met, something had passed between them -- an unspoken feeling of familiarity, as if they were known to one another already. And perhaps I have been waiting for her, as well.

Her disposition was refreshing amidst the destruction, and when she asked to hunt with him, the Alpha blinked, surprised. He'd figured she needed his help rescuing someone she knew, or wanted to join Howlsong, or...something else. A Hunt? Now? But her words were convincing, even if they held no deference. His head tipped to the side, ears listening for any cries for help, for anyone who needed him. All seems quiet for now, at least. Kestrel flicked an ear, golden eyes meeting sky-blue again, the female's closeness beseeching him to agree.

"I will consent, but only if we hunt large game. There are many who need food, and if we could bring them some, I'm sure it would give them hope." He would, of course, let Kaalia and himself eat first, but there were other Vurfang who currently couldn't hunt, or didn't have the time. "I imagine the herds have fled to higher ground, as have we all, and recall seeing the tracks of elk some way back. Are you up for the challenge, Kaalia?" For indeed, two wolves taking down an elk would be a hard task, but with Kestrel's strength, it would be easier for them than for most. Still, hunting with a Vurfang he didn't know would be tricky, and they'd have to learn on the fly how to coordinate with one another. But he saw the spark of happiness in the Delta's gaze, and allowed a small smile to curve his lips.

"Very well. Let us Hunt."

Waiting on baited breath, the Delta didn't even know she wasn't breathing until he said something. Her tensed body released, a thankful sigh escaping her maw as she gave a quick bow of her head, "Thank you, thank you! I'm sure if we work together and pool our resources we'll be able to feed those in need." Her expression was warm, and the air appeared static with joy about her. At his warning, Kaalia couldn't hold back her snort. "I wouldn't have it any other way. Big game will just make the success sweeter. I'm ready if you are, Alpha. Even as she spoke, her body was already moving, paws taking her forward as she began the trek down the hill, using his massive paw prints as a trail. Following them would more than likely lead the pair to where the elk tracks would be. From there, they would be able to begin the hunt.

Desire began to seep from her sleek frame as a sort of apprehension took hold. She wondered what it would be like to hunt with him. It was then that something occurred to her.

"What's your name? Or what would you like me to call you?" Kaalia turned her head back in the direction of the burly yet lithe male as they traveled onward at a steady pace. "And what's our plan? I prefer to stalk, ambush, and herd toward the group, but since it's two of us we should come up with a plan. Better to be prepared, right?"

It felt nice to talk to another Varsythe. It felt good to be in the presence of something other than death and depression. She hoped that the Heir would feel the same. A thought then crossed her mind that he might prefer to be solitary. So many others revered him; she wondered if maybe he felt weight on his shoulders or if something like this came easy to him. Did he have others who helped him, or did it go at it alone? It was then Kaalia decided that during their time together, she would gain what she could from both conversation and observations. Although she felt it her duty to help, protect, and serve the Heir, it was still in her nature to question everything until she was satisfied with the information. Besides, she doubted he would want someone like her as an advisor. Kaalia considered herself inexperienced, with too much hope in her heart. She always saw the value and worth in others, hardly ever the undesirable side of them which made her naïve, innocent even.

'Why am I even thinking about this, anyway?' The she-wolf growled to herself inwardly. 'I need to concentrate on the hunt, on feeding those that need help. I can always argue with myself about my hope to help later. For now, he needs me focused and at my best.'
