Prelude
Esther's Hunger

From her perspective, Esther had been wandering almost aimlessly for several moons, almost alone aside from a passing spirit from week to week. For all intents and purposes she was alone, without her memories, confused and wet. Very wet in fact and very cold. The weather was atrocious, storm after storm rolled in, lightning frequently struck the ground no matter how far she walked or climbed and even the caverns were not safe.

Soaking wet through and in the midst of a storm already, the ground beneath her feet shook violently, knocking her off balance for the moment as the very landscape shifted around her, hills rose and new valleys were gouged out and this would happen again and again. These tremors had been a regular occurrence ever since she could remember but she did not understand why, nor why they seemed to be getting worse along with the storms.

Usually she found herself having to brace against a tree or find shelter in the form of a hollow cave or even a small copse of woodland, from time to time she would even hum a song, the thought had never occurred to her to seek out food and water as she had never become either hungry or thirsty. Yet she did keep track of the tremors and the storms, even going so far to make marks from charcoal made by trees struck by lightening on walls to record her thoughts. Such a place she was returning to now, a small cave that had proven for the most part to be resilient against the tremors and was sufficiently sheltered from the elements as well.

Making her way over a shallow ridge half barren from the turbulent weather, she cast her eyes over the valley before her. One of the few places with trees, a lot of bamboo like flora for sure but a lot of trees, mostly willow, beech, interspersed with something that resembled an oak tree but was more spread out. Even a thin river was still flowing through the valley out to some unknowable sea, but its course had changed several times with a few new lakes forming thanks to fallen boulders. All in all the tolerance of life for upset was astounding...even if they were not necessarily alive.

The cave that she sought was just a few dozen feet up the side of the other valley and it was there that she was calling home frequently. The clouds were beginning to roll in again, a sign of a brewing storm and her cue to get moving again.

    ...to be continued
