It had been several weeks since Kestrel's disappearance, though that was not unusual for the white wolf, in all the time that Riptide had known him. He sat on an outcropping of rock, eyeing the moon in the sky, judging just how many had come and gone since, and he realized the time was nigh for his return. He had been busy, guarding the lands his Alpha held dear, and so time had passed quickly. Chuckling softly, he hoped this pack would grow beyond just the two of them, however he had to admit as long as he had Kes, there was little else he needed. A mate would be nice, BUT responsibilities came first, and he vowed to do as he promised. He was a Guardian after all, and even if all he had to guard when Kes was away was the land itself, then he'd give his life for it.

It was now time.

He lifted his head, and gave a howl, an almost soft calling for his friend that would travel for miles, greeting his return if he was within the pack borders. He did this twice more before waiting for an answer...if it would return. The position of the moon was right after all.

x K ᴇ s ᴛ ʀ ᴇ ʟxxx Long strides ate the distance, paws throwing up tufts of grass as his claws dug into the moist earth. He panted as he ran, sides heaving as he weaved through the copses of trees, lunging four feet at every stride. He came down hard, grunting, and pushed off of the ground once again with powerful hindquarters, the muscles along his chest and shoulders and flanks rippling with each movement.

Kestrel slowed first to a trot, then to a sedate walk as he crested the ridge that would show him Howlshire Meadow: his home. He flicked an eerie gaze up towards the skies, taking in the low, fat-bellied moon hanging on the horizon. Five hours late. He quirked a small smile; Riptide would be beginning to worry soon.

As if on cue, he heard a gentle, ululating howl: once, twice, thrice. Kestrel sat down on the ridge, looking out over his lands. The Twin Rivers danced in the pale light of the moon, long grasses tickling their banks. The height of the ridge separating the Meadow from the Lothium Woods to the North gave him an almost panoramic view. He could see dark blotches moving sedately: herds of various breeds settling in for the night. He squinted, making out a few wolves; one was sure to be Riptide, and the other two likely the Pup and Female who wished to join the Pack.

Tipping his nose into the air and elongating his neck, Kestrel let loose a mournful-sounding howl; the sound perked the ears of any Varsythe within twenty miles, and some of them might have sent a thought for The Heir winging star-ward: they all knew he watched over them, no matter if they belonged to the Meadow or the far-away Solaris Island.

His howl said many things, but it spoke of a joy on returning, a fulfillment of being back in his territory, and the sign that all was well, at least for tonight. His tail giving a gentle wag as he stood, Kestrel padded forward silently, zig-zagging his way down the ridge. We're more than ready to be back, aren't we?

Even the incessant Voice of the Ancestor couldn't dampen his mood as the Heir forded first the northern Twin, then the lower. He trotted south, and finally caught his Beta's scent on the wind. Kestrel lowered his head and changed his course slightly, angling for the male. After a few minutes, he slowed to a sedate, stately walk as Riptide came into view.

"Well met, Brother. It is good to be home."

A breeze tickled his nose and Riptide sneezed violently, distracting him from the worries that were growing. The hour was late, and tho Kes had never broken a promise, still he couldn't help but wonder if all was well. Shaking his head to clear it, he surveyed the area, eyeing the shadows closely even tho they would be hard pressed to hide the wolf in white.

He thought for a moment of last they had run together, but he was brought back to the present by the sound of mournful, yet joyous, howl. His tail wagged in response, and tongue lolled out as his body relaxed. He longed to run to him, much like a pup, but they had agreed this would be their meeting spot, and so he waited, patiently, even if his paws were hard to keep still.

He finally appeared, almost glowing in the darkness, and Riptide stood, bowing his head in greeting before bounding over with almost puppy-ish glee. He might be Beta, but sight of his friend after so long always brought out the inner pup in him. He owed his life to Kes, and so much more bonded their friendship beyond that of the roles they played. It was a good portion what made them the team they were, and the trust and love they had for each other.

Giving a playful little n**, Riptide finally settled down and jokingly asked, "So did anyone finally follow you home? Kinda lonely here when you leave."

x K ᴇ s ᴛ ʀ ᴇ ʟxxx The wolf stood, expression stoic as Riptide bounded around him, slinking around and licking his jaw and chin, tail pumping. A single, slow wag of his own was the only thing that showed his amusement and happiness at being back in his home territory. I imagine it does get rather dull around here, with no company.

Kestrel flicked an elongated ear, and with a flick of his head, commanded his Beta to follow. "Mmm." He trotted easily, despite his long journey, and though he wished only to lay down and sleep, Kestrel knew he had to complete his patrol before he could rest easily. He led Riptide towards the northern end of the Lunaris Forest, eerie eyes roving over the treeline.

"In the last few days, I met first a female with the name of Rainclaw, who aided me when the Ancestor's Voice grew too loud. She will be joining us." He flashed a quick smile at his Beta, knowing the male would appreciate an actual Pack to watch over when Kestrel was away. "There was a young Pup by the name of Tuuluuwaq, and he will make a fine Operative when he is grown. He has no Pack of his own, and you know I cannot abide seeing a child on their own."

Survey of the treeline done, Kes turned around, tail flowing out behind him. The bell hanging from his horn chimed merrily with every other step he took as he headed towards the central Meadow. "Finally, a female Alpha named Sephra, who comes from a Pack of Healers. She did not wish to mate simply to produce more of her Class, and had heard of us."

He slowed, muscles aching from his trek almost up the entire length of Zareth's west coast. He turned a yellow eye towards the dark Beta. "Does that please you, Tide?" His voice held mirth, though it was a steady baritone as always.

It did please him, more than he could say. It got lonely during the Alpha's journeys and frankly it'd be nice to not only have company when Kestrel left, but to have an actual pack to watch over, to feel like he was indeed doing good works guarding this land as much as he did when no one else was around. The female alpha worried him a little, however, mostly due to the idea of what she might be like, if they'd get along, what she might be like when Kes wasn't there, but still, what Kes thought of her spoke a mile to Riptide. If he liked her enough to invite her in, she had to have something really good going for her.

He stood a little straighter, meeting Kes's eye as he turned towards him and giving a large wolfish grin and wag of his tail, replied "Indeed it does. I assume you told them how to get here, of course, and where to meet. Kinda be sad if you'd forgotten to tell them such details...poor things lost wandering around, might start to think they hallucinated you."

They were turning in toward the central meadow, the heart of their territory. Home. He kept close, tho still slightly behind Kestrel's shoulder, the tiny chiming of the other's bells in time with his pawsteps a cheery sound in the darkness. This is when he felt most at home...and where he belonged. It mattered not the surroundings, nor if hundreds of pups were to be playing at his feet, it was with his Alpha, a male he'd follow anywhere even till death. He hoped the others found such happiness in the new pack even if not all reasons were the same.

As they neared the central region, he slowed a little giving Kestrel the clear lead to where the others were waiting...he hoped they'd have arrived, this was going to be exciting.
